  1. What I get sad about is knowing that if I have kids now, they'll lose Esky sometime before they leave home
  2. I've got one but I want more. Two seems like a much better idea for racing. They can have company when I go out. Three would also be good, two home, one out for a trip with me. Any more than two though would be very hard for rentals. My girl is such a sook she really loves being around other people and dogs. Hopefully she'll be happy when we eventually add to our pack
  3. Surely you've got room in that caravan for one more dog sam man
  4. Appeasement behaviour is not equal to guilt. The dog is giving signals to try and calm down the angry human not admitting guilt for the behaviour. You would get the same behaviour from a dog that's not guilty of anything
  5. It reads as though your rottie is confused by the new surface and has to be reminded that outside is the place to go. Each new house we've moved into we're made sure to go back and reinforce toilet training as each house has had different types of flooring. Can you block off the area of the house with the plastic covered floors when you're not around?
  6. Yep, there's weightpull with many of our club members at the adelaide royal. Saturday the 15th of this month :) I'm not entered with Esky, but there should be people around you can speak too if you go to that. Transport is much friendlier to that one :) Or there is another event in Paracombe on the 23rd of this month :D
  7. Sorry wrong side of town for me Not sure if there are busses that go to paracombe but maybe you could come and have a look and a chat at how things are run and see if someone can bring you the next time :)
  8. Just bumping this up incase anyone wants to come do something this weekend
  9. Not really, however the breed I am seriously in love with/ dreaming of importing etc has a cross breeding program going currently. The aims of this program are to increase the gene pool and also to try and reduce a breed specific seisure disorder. Obviously the dogs won't be crossed with just any breed, the crosses themselves are approved before the matings take place. After 5 gens, the crosses will be considered a pure example of the breed. Although if the dog is a good example of the breed they can be classed as 'pure' sooner. A 3rd generation bitch I believe went BOB at the national championship. This is a recognised breed by the kennel club in it's country of origin so can be shown in champ shows along with all other recognised breeds.
  10. There aren't any ANKC titles for sled racing or weightpull sadly
  11. Treat ball? Just the round ones that roll around on the floor Esky uses her paws a lot and she really enjoys that :)
  12. 8am for registration and a chance for novice to have a turn to see if their dogs are keen 8:30am competition begins Time has been changed to 10am. Much nicer for all concerned
  13. At Paracombe Community Sports Centre, Paracombe Road, Paracombe (Pretty sure it's in Paracombe  ) Novices are encouraged to come and try out. It's free to give your dog a go at pulling the cart before competition starts. (To see if they'll do it or not) Any breed medium or above can compete. You have to bring along your dogs weight recorded by your vet (should be free to do this) Plenty of friendly people around to help you get the hang of things. Lend harnesses etc Hope to see some folk there
  14. Huski had a similar thread in offtopic not too long ago. We did albury - adelaide with Esky and the cat. We had to do it all in one go because we had limited time with the trailer. Only had a few stops for wees etc. Stopped for lunch and carried on. Esky was only very young about 3 months but she was very patient and slept most of the way. Cat was way more annoying
  15. What was the reason why you stopped training your dog?I haven't stopped training, but I stopped going to training. I loved where we used to go, but my manager without fail would roster me at a time that made it very difficult to get there. Now I work nights, spend my weekends racing ( or seeing my boyfriend! ) so there's no obedience clubs around that cater to my messed up schedule. Do you feel your dog is well trained enough? She's the best trained dog I've owned, but I feel compelled to do more with her like other DOLers who trial their dogs. Did you not get results from previous training attempts? We had good results, I was very happy with our old club Is training too far away/ too often/ too expensive? The club I like is too far away now, and fairly costly, I'm considering going back anyway because I miss it so much Are you simply too busy? Yes *sigh* Did you find training boring? Only when we went over the same stuff too many times. What would prompt you to start training again or would you not start training again regardless? A new job
  16. Your dogs always look so happy on their tethers. This is one thing I am going to work on a lot more with our next puppy (whenever that is) How long do you leave your pups on a tether when training?
  17. Original reason I wanted an active dog was for my personal fitness. My goal at the moment is currently to make Esky the best companion that I can through training, and enjoy spending time with her. Long term goal with dogs in general is to import and establish what I believe is the right breed for my lifestyle, and hopefully to have some racing and trialling success in the process.
  18. It's not really a gamble if you're patient, research the lines of dogs you want and finding a breeder that you trust. If you're tossing it up (and starting these threads is a good sign that you're hesitating) pass on the puppy this time and wait until everything feels right with your instincts.
  19. Really! Might as well just let my dog off in a fenced off playground and let her play bitey face with all the kids *insert mr eye roll guy*
  20. Aww no poor Mars I don't know anyone in that area sorry. Is it possible to keep an eye on her and take her to work in a crate, some office environments will allow it if you ask nicely. Depends where you work though, I'm in a bakery so it's a no go.
  21. Alaskans are a real breed (or breed type depending on who you ask) , but they are very uncommon in Australia. The dogs ABR placed were more likely sibe crosses than alaskans. Judging by the isolated area the OP lives in I'd say the chance of this dog being an alaskan mix is very very very slim indeed. (Not a go at you Lollipup btw :) )
  22. Don't do it. Stick it out and go with an ethical registered breeder
  23. 1 already! Christ that went quick! Epic party too, I won't show Esky, she's spoiled enough I reckon she'll get jealous
  24. The road kill sounds like an awesome idea I know she's chase that, especially if she were even slightly hungry
  25. I've only done it once so far. But my girl's prey drive hasn't changed. If anything I was a little dissapointed with how she went. I thought she would have been a lot hotter on the chase. She's unfortunately got the better of some of my inlaws stupider chickens. It's a different story when we see a roo while sledding in the forest. Luckily my girl seems to be very dim when it comes to chasing things on the trail. Shes just runs really really hard on the track, but has never tried to venture off into the trees. If only there were roos at every race we'd kick some butt
