  1. Easthborn Holistic also do a grainfree food. I don't normally feed kibble but my girl has done very well on their food
  2. Hmm when can I move in :p I'm western suburbs, we didn't have trouble finding a place. I viewed heaps, applied for two and was approved for both. We had pet resume's for dog and cat and a short bio about us. I had a very low income job and OH had an ok one and we still managed to get a really good place. :)
  3. I got a fairly big crate to give my girl room and when I go out, if I have to leave her alone I attach the 'famous' bunnings compost panels to the front to give her a veranda. Gives her room to move about, but not get up to any mischeif. The crate I got was from some cheapo website.
  4. I spoke to a lady who imported huskies from the US She used Pet Carriers International, according to her the agent arranges all the permits and the mumbo jumbo and also lets the breeders in the US know the closest vets to them that are certified to carry out the tests. Here's the site http://www.petcarriers.com.au/importing.asp :)
  5. I started a thread with a similar theme not long ago, i'll see if i can find it for you. I'll be veru interested to find out how you go edit i saw you posted in that thread but anyway here it is if its any help :-) http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/240089-import-questions/page__fromsearch__1
  6. well she certainly has a lot to say in competition when the weight gets too challenging. Im thinking about getting one of those fitness balls for her. Anyone got some links on exercises we can do with them?
  7. Yes most racing huskies are quite lean and long. Our weight pull attempts haven't been great so far so I'm hoping that helping her to build her strength and muscle will help us out at events. Just looking at alternatives to simple pulling so that our training will help condition her as best I can. Good to read that we are doing most of what is being suggested here :)
  8. Our sports all involve pulling loads. My girl is quite skinny and i think it would do her a world of good to become more muscular which would in turn make pulling easier
  9. Wondering if anyone can suggest any excercises or methods to help my dog become stronger \ more muscular?
  10. Thanks for the advice. we are doing the trick training now. It is quite slow... without treat they can sit, lie down, high five/shake hand. with treat they can spin, circle me and turn. I found roll over is very difficult for them must be some problem with my technique.... will keep going with the training, but it is not easy... With Kong, I found the original kong biscuit does not interest them at all. however, if I put normal dry food and a piece of treat in and cover with peanut butter, they will wake up from sleep and start looking for it. haha.... Lately I found them not interest in their food too much and very easily get distracted by some noise or other things, especially the female. Do you have any suggestion what's likely to be the favorite favorite food/treats please based on your experience with sibes? I am train with them with the recall now. They have been pretty good. I use the whistle. so my next step is hide in one room and whistle till they come and find me and reward them the best treat so that they can remember "forever". when you mention "Spend individual time with them" could you please explain a bit more with that idea? when I take them to school, that's my time along with one as I took them to different school. but at home it is not that easy to spend individual time with one. sorry for the questionnaire... Thanks, Don't be sorry. I've been in almost this situation before. I thought I knew what I was in for, but raising a stubborn breed like a sibe can be tough. As far as training goes, it might seem a bit of a strict thing to do, but I make my dog work for any food they get. Especially as a puppy! I will portion out the meals that she is due to be fed (if it's only kibble then I'd add some interesting things like some cut up chicken or steak) That way I can keep track of how much I feed while I train. If they don't earn food directly from me, by doing tricks, then I put it into a treat toy, like a treatball/ kong wobbler/ frozen in a block/ a cut up milk carton and she will earn her food from the toy. I like to train with a dog that's a bit hungry so that it really wants to work for that food. I only do short training sessions, no more than 5 mins at a time for a pup. You could just do a few sits during add breaks of a tv show I've found in my experience that my sibe responds well to a training style known as 'shaping' or 'free shaping'. I'm not having a very good time trying to explain how it works, but if you're interested am I'm not confusing you too much I can find you a link that better explaing it. Essentially the dog has to work out what you want from it, so it is good for wearing out the evil genius brains that sibes have  I taught Esky to fetch by putting a toy on the ground. Anytime she went near the toy she got a reward, then I reward her when she decided to touch it, then I only reward when she touches it with her mouth and on it goes :) My first sibe didn't like kongs much, but Esky only likes toys that give food, but if you're having issues with them fighting I probably would only give these kind of toys when the dogs are alone. Most people will rotate toys around, and only have a few out at a time, stops the dog getting bored of one particular toy. Good idea with the recall. Esky's is nowhere near what I'd like, but it has saved her life, so I'm very glad we've spent so much time working on it! I'd be practicing that in lots of different places too, on a long line, so that the dog learns to recall anywhere. As far as spending time with them individually, you really want to make sure you have a bond with each pup, so you need to spend time bonding with each one on its own. You could put one in a pen/crate/ other room as has been suggested and do training with one, then change them over. Or maybe do some lead training with a short walk to the end of the street and back. Otherwise the pups will just end up bonded to each other and may not listen to you when you ask them things.
  11. What breed are you looking at, maybe some people on here could give you an idea on price range for the breed. My girls breeder was pretty upfront about price, i had already told her a fair bit about myself in emails so she invited me to call i guess to check whether we were genuine or not
  12. Registration from 8am Novices can have a practice run before competition starts at 8:30 This Sunday in Paracombe Community Centre, Paracombe Rd, Paracombe :D We had a rottie come and try at our last event. I'd love to see more dogs with carting heritage come have a go. Someone come give the mallies a run for their money
  13. Good luck. Plenty of people do raise husky littermates, but most I know have intentions of racing etc. Trick training is a great way to tire out the brain of a sibe. Or toys like kongs, treat balls etc to keep them busy. We got our first husky before 8 weeks, and sadly she came with a few issues I look back on now and wonder how I missed. ( Was my first time with my own pet) Sadly she left us far too you. One thing I will stress with you and your puppies. Spend individual time with them. And practice recall. Recall recall recall. It will save their lives one day.
  14. I used to do that in my swift. People thought I was mental. Those set ups look really cool lollipup. Part of me wants to do up my hilux like that, but I hesitate because I worry about my ute not being multi purpose anymore
  15. In most retail jobs you're not allowed to sell or give away stuff for your own gain while you are working. Would it be acceptable to sell drugs or solicit their sale while working. Regardless of her breeding practices she is breaking her terms of employment and should expect to be reprimanded
  16. Or there's the Tamaskan which will be on our shores very shortly.
  17. Enabler! We finally own a proper crate
  18. I also suggest the Pat Hastings book. Lot's of diagrams and really detailed but easy to understand explanations.
  19. Yes they sure do use their nails! At our last event two nails were found in the pulling ring. Poor dogs Such an awesome picture
  20. The only toys Miss Esky plays regularly are ones that give out food. At the moment we have Kongs and a Kong Wobbler. Looking at other options, is the bob a lot the same as the wobbler. I want to have a few different toys around so they can be rotated and getting food each day will be a different challenge. What toys would you all suggest?
  21. I always wanted a husky as a kid ( along with labs, bcs, salukis and schips ) When I moved out of home I decided why not. I wanted a dog that would force me to excercise. Fortunately (unfortunately) our first bitch and Esky both seem to have missed the point and are happy to relax a lot. OH now doesn't trust huskies, so all northern breeds are out for our next pet. I want to continue sled racing for as long as I can and have whittled down my choices to one option. An obedient and multipurpose sled breed. Now I just need to get the cash together to import one *le sigh*
