  1. It sounds like you live near me with your description of the park. Our council has left one bin in this huge park, if you know where to find it, so I guess we can be thankful for small mercies. The park is off leash and most people do pick up their dog poop in the park. Not around the streets though.
  2. Steve your now deleted post was informative. I took note of it and thank you for the info.
  3. I had a relative staying with me for a while who drank almost every day. He was an obnoxious, nasty drunk. When he was sober the dogs liked him. When he was loud and abusive the dogs stayed right by me, they wouldn't go near him. It was a huge relief when he left. He wouldn't have been welcome in the first place had I known. I don't like being around drunk people and neither do my dogs. If I had a drunk visitor to my home I would ensure the dogs were kept away from the person. I would also ensure the visit was a very short one.
  4. Yippeegirl, I'm in the Monash Council and in their wisdom they've decided to remove rubbish bins. Where there were bins there are none. Their reasoning is if you create rubbish you should take it home with you. Idiots! As if! Rates increase as council amenities decrease. I don't need to ask where they're spending the rates money. As winter approaches there'll be no one to ask anyway save a few disinterested office staff. Our esteemed councillors are visiting various overseas locations where the weather is balmy on some obscure council business. I don't expect the council to provide bags for our dog crap. We who do pick up are happy to provide our own. Just place a bin here and there so we don't have to carry smelly bags for the remainder of our walk. People are leaving dog crap everywhere and kids drop lolly wrappers and drink cartons in the street after visiting the milk bar on their way home from school, not to mention all the drink cans. Because there are no bins. I see one huge pile of dog crap around the streets close to home almost every day. I want to find the owner of what must be a very large dog. I'll have something of theirs I'm eager to return to their property. I carry multiple bags in my pocket, it's easy. I don't get people who don't pick up. It's messy and unhygienic. I'm don't want my dogs sniffing possibly disease ridden dog crap.
  5. Yep I'm not disputing the excellent helpful service. It was that the products did not work.
  6. But there aren't 12,000 homes available every year for one breed no matter how well socialised they are. The way I understood what Kirty is saying is that there should be alot less greyhounds bred in the first place which I totally agree with. I agree with Kirty and Rebanne. What I don't quite understand is that some seem to think the current over breeding of Greys and the resulting number of unwanted dogs should become the responsibility of rescue. No, the responsibility for these unwanted dogs sits squarely on the shoulders of those who are breeding litter after litter in their quest for a winning dog. The problem is too big for rescue. Rescue does the best they can and they do a great job but they can't possibly rehome 12,000 unwanted Greyhounds per annum. Stop the indiscriminate breeding of Greyhounds.
  7. Corrie, are you saying McDowells are homeopathic rather than Herbalists or are you referring to Canine Vitality? I wonder about this with McDowells. I've bought a few supplements from McDowells for my dogs and for myself. Of course with the ones I was taking myself it was pretty clear they weren't doing anything. It's a bit harder to know what's working or not working with the dogs. None of the products did what I expected they would do so I've decided their products are not for me. They're not cheap to buy either.
  8. Nope Glen. Have had various dogs on that supplement for years but no allergic reaction in any of them. Are you sure its the Gluc/Chon/MSM that is the cause of the problem?
  9. LG if public or regulated gambling on the dogs was removed there are those who would still gamble and it would go underground, the same way as gambling on dog fighting flies under the radar. Everyone knows it happens but there's no regulating body and no one, in particular the ring leaders, ever seem to get caught. I can't get the image of that beautiful greyhound on the fence out of my mind He looks so gentle and trusting. I hope those cruel dregs of humanity are duly punished and incarcerated for a very long time. Sadly I doubt it. For justice to be done these sub humans need to be incarcerated with animal loving inmates who would ensure that some kerb side petty session justice would take place.
  10. OMG it's getting worse the more we hear about it. Look at the sweet face on the Greyhound at the fence on the property of the accused. How in hell could anyone hurt these beautiful dogs? I really hope the remaining dogs on that property are very quickly removed and taken safely away from these people.
  11. How sad. How unbelievably cruel. The Greyhound Racing Industry needs to be thoroughly investigated and some damn rules and regulations put in place for those who don't care about the dogs unless they're money winners. It's time breeding restrictions were put in place.
  12. I hope you've found a vet who can reset this dislocated elbow. There will be one, it's a matter of finding him. A specialist vet will guide you in the right direction. Make some phone calls. The key here is to ALWAYS keep your dog on lead when in areas that carry traffic and always on lead in all other areas unless and until the dog has excellent recall.
  13. The owner of the SWF is more than likely reluctant to report the issue because she was also in the wrong and should not have had her dog in the reserve in the first place. If she reports the incident she will also be reporting herself. I hope this owner has learned not to allow her SWF to annoy and harass dogs who are kept behind their owners fences. The Council is taking a sensible approach to the matter. I doubt they will give you any grief. It's evident you are a responsible dog owner. Well done for taking quick action to make adjustments to the fence so the big dog will be unable be able to scale it in future. Thanks for the good update and please keep us posted.
  14. SWF should not have been in the reserve hassling the bigger dog behind its fence. Big dog should not have been enclosed in a yard with inadequate fencing. Should have had suitable fencing to make scaling impossible. Neither of the dogs are at fault, they were doing what dogs do. This is totally the fault of both dog owners. It has nothing to do with big dog vs. small dog.
  15. Thanks Allerzeit. This is a terrible situation for everyone.
  16. I think it would be prudent of your friend to inform the ranger exactly what she intends to do in respect of her inadequate fencing. If the fence was adequate the dog could not have escaped.
  17. Oh how awful for the victim, the Westie and the Rottie. Where was the Rottie's owner whilst this was taking place I wonder. She too must be devastated. The lady who was bitten has a good attitude. I hope her recovery is relatively quick and painless.
  18. Hope he's feeling much better this morning. Sending healing vibes. Hoping for an update when you get the chance.
  19. Christina there is excellent treatment available in Melbourne. My dog is testament to that. Brookestar I would not wait for your regular vet to return. Your dog is in serious pain. The referral for my dog wasn't from my usual vet. It was a vet that I occasionally see at a surgery closer to me and this was an emergency early on a Sunday morning when my regular vet is not open. All I needed to do was ask the surgeon to please send all information to my usual vet, who as luck has it is a good friend of his. All information was sent to the vet who gave the referral and also to my regular vet. This gave me the option of seeing either of these vets. I chose to see my regular vet but the information is on the local vets computer for the sake of record keeping. The Specialist Centre will send all information to whichever vet/s you request. Tell them your usual vet is overseas at present. You can get treatment for your dog urgently. I hope the epidural steroid injection works, they are notoriously unsuccessful in humans as well as animals. At least your dog will have a general anaesthetic because those damn things are painful. The neurosurgeon who performed my successful spinal fusion has a very poor opinion of these steroid epidurals. He said they hurt, they're expensive and they don't work. Failing all that I agree with Christina that euthanasia would be the kindest thing to do. As she said, nerve pain is excruciating.
  20. What makes me think it was a bite is that there are two wounds. Couldn't miss the one on his nose;)
  21. No in the food. A small bit of cream cheese on the tablet and he/she might take it from your hand. This works a charm with all my dogs. It might be worth just giving a tiny amount of cream cheese on your finger before you try with the tablet.
  22. Can you try giving the tablet in some cream cheese?
  23. May I again suggest you consult with either Pete Laverty or Simon Kudnik at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre. The are both specialist surgeons and they know their stuff.
