  1. glad the dog was alright, and that Roberts had the sense to know it wasn't Honey Bun's fault (what a name!).
  2. Have also found a publically available copy of another of Karen Delise's publications here: http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/uploaded_files/tinymce/Pit_Bull_Placebo_download.pdf
  3. unfortunately O'Conner is not known for his common sense, he is quite good at using scaremongering tactics to push through legislation. Yes. Read Karen Delise's book Fatal Dog Attacks. I'd love to see it as a compulsory read for anyone who wants to discuss how to control dangerous dogs in society. Thank you - I hope journos that report dog attacks would read up too.
  4. Anyone know of a survey or study about the 'breed' of owner whose dog has attacked and caused injury?
  5. http://www.smh.com.au/victoria/woman-77-in-latest-dog-attack-20110823-1j824.html I hope O'Connor has more sense than Shorten to make sweeping statements such as he did. I hope the lady is ok, horrid situation. Woman, 77, in latest dog attack Mex Cooper August 23, 2011 - 4:38PM An elderly woman has been attacked by two German shepherds in Melbourne's east as politicians move to investigate national dangerous dog laws after a four-year-old was mauled to death last week. The 77-year-old was set upon by the pair of dogs in her rear garden in Ringwood about 11.30am before she managed to fend off the animals and retreat inside her house. She was bitten on the ankle and scratched by the dogs which were subsequently seized by Maroondah Council workers. A council spokeswoman said the dogs' owners had been identified and the matter was under investigation. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the elderly woman was shaken by the attack and was treated by paramedics at her Hugh Street home before being taken to Maroondah Hospital. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were also investigating. The attack comes as Federal Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor promised to raise the possibility of national dangerous dog laws in the wake of the death of Ayen Chol who was savaged by a pit bull mastiff in her Melbourne home last Wednesday. At a caucus meeting today, Mr O'Connor was asked by Labor frontbencher Bill Shorten to take up the issue. Mr Shorten told the caucus that some jurisdictions imposed small fines for convicted dangerous dog owners while others had jail terms. He described pit bulls as "sharks on legs". Mr O'Connor said he would raise the issue with his state and territory counterparts. Ayen was watching television with several other children when the dog chased her cousin, Angelina Mayout, 31, into the St Albans home. The dog attacked Ms Mayout's five-year-old daughter Nyadeng Goaer and when Ms Appok tried to intervene, the dog turned on Ayen, who had been clinging to her mother's leg. A funeral for Ayen will be held on Friday.
  6. http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ free shipping to Australia, good prices, and a good conscience - all profits go to world literacy charities (ie books for under priveliged). They save old library books from landfill too, so you can buy second hand as well as new. They might not always have the book you want but I always check there first just in case they do, so my money is going to a good cause
  7. These are gorgeous I think dog owners here are like the dogs in that email forward (where the dog says.. walk time... my FAVOURITE thing! food time, my FAVOURITE thing! - and EVERYTHING is his FAVOURITE thing!) - I assume everyone DOLER has seen it! To me, there is no favourite time of day, but when we get a quiet moment, and she wants a cuddle, I sit on the floor and ask her if she is a sooky la la and she wags her tail all the way over to me til her face is buried against me so she can get rubs all over.
  8. I've often wished I could do that where I live but dont know how to go about it... we used to do that when she was growing up, it was great, she loved it! well done!!
  9. I just had a look at the Dyson website because I have been curious about the new pet hair product and it is a brush attatchment for the vacume. It says it is for medium to long hair dogs. I wonder if mine count as medium. It would be good to be able to try things like this to save buying something that might end up in with the dog stuff that hardly ever gets used. LINK We tried this out at the dyson stand at a dog day out... it was fantastic! basically a slicker brush attached to a hose, but once you let go of the handle clip, all the dog hair gets sucked up and there is no need to sit there pulling hair out of the brush. No doubt it would suck up loose bits of dander/dirt too if you want it to. My girl hates the vacuum though and when we tried this out she sat compliantly but gave my dirty looks the whole time
  10. wow dried mackeral..! any photos from your weekend's efforts??
  11. Hey there are more replies than votes on the poll! Would be curious to see what people spend based on those who show / do dog activities and sports vs those who don't too.
  12. awesome thread... inspired me to have a little browse and I ended up buying a book on dog biscuits. loads available here (and free international shipping too) http://www.betterworldbooks.com/dog-biscuits-H0.aspx?SearchTerm=dog+biscuits
  13. I wonder what has come of this story, I can't find any updates on the net...
  14. I read about so many acts of kindness here on DOL I cannot possibly submit them all myself, but deserve a mention because of the lengths and efforts that have gone into it. I thought there might be people here that might want to share acts of kindness you have received or witnessed... You can submit your entry here: http://kaldorartprojects.org.au/actsofkindness For the 24th Kaldor Public Art Project, Michael Landy wants to hear about acts of kindness you have seen or experienced in the city. Submit your story between 20 July and 20 August to take part. Celebrated UK artist Michael Landy is calling for everyday stories of kindness that you have seen or experienced in Sydney to make his ambitious new public artwork, Acts of Kindness, in the Sydney CBD. Acts of Kindness focuses on the simple everyday gestures of kindness that take place in a busy, bustling city and often go unnoticed, from someone offering a bus seat or helping a stranger to just sharing a kind word or a smile. Acts of Kindness provides an opportunity to share these fleeting exchanges and to recognise everyday acts of compassion and generosity that would otherwise be forgotten. Be part of this next Kaldor Public Art Project with Michael Landy that will be presented during Art & About 2011 and send us your story now. Supporters SUBMIT AN ENTRY Submissions should describe a story, present or past, that took place in the city. The act of kindness described could be something you witnessed, something done for you or something that you did for someone else and please tell us where it happened if you can.
  15. Oh - I didn't think of that. city slicker question... (in this context) what is a lamb worth?
  16. I like what he has been able to do for the people around him, "He had become the symbol of hope and strength to so many at [Kandahar Air Field]." His story has a lot of potential to inspire a lot more people. $11K is a lot of money, but good luck to them. Maybe some of it is going to boarding fees whilst money is being raised? 6 months is a long quarantine poor baby.
  17. Dog free human entrance? Was thinking about all those threads about meter readers and how they should be able to access your meter, or people needing to be able to access the front door to knock without having to encounter a dog. Being able to open the door without having to hold back dogs (if that is the case) - I guess that falls under being able to close off areas of the house. would love to have seperate laundries too, the 'dog' one would be bigger so I have a sort of internal drying room.
  18. Haha! Happened to me at work just the other day! As for the chocolate lab, dont get me started anyone who wants one because it will match the couch but doesnt like 'too much dog hair'. Er... I am always finding those black poo-bags in ALL my handbags and jacket pockets.
  19. I'm sorry, I know its a serious topic, but this made me giggle. I have a vision of a dog frantically trying to open the car door with its paws! Seriously though, why would you need to? (mind you we have automatic central locking so its not really an issue for me.) And to answer the main question, my GR goes in the hatch in the back of my SUV. She lies down and waits for release... I always lock doors when inside the car for two main reasons, both safety. 1. to avoid car jacking of any sort - if it's already locked when you get to a set of lights, you're not having to scramble for it when it does come down to an emergency. 2. if you do get into a bad accident, there is less chance that the doors will fling open, say if your car is rolling. People worry that they wont be able to unlock the car to get out, but you're better off safe and able to try get yourself out, than having doors flung open (and possibly flung out) whilst being in the accident!! My girl is in a harness, but because they're not the best proven safety in an accident, I keep the door lock in case of an accident, I wouldnt want her flung out. ps. thanks for the mental image of the paw scrabbling at the door handle though.. hehe
  20. We were thinking of seeing it on the weekend with my sister and her boyfriend but I don't think I can handle watching if it has a sad ending. Could you please pm me and let me know about the ending. Sorry Kynan, I haven't seen it myself, my friend went to see it. She's helped me with my foster dogs and knows what a soft heart I have for k9's, which is probably why she thinks I will need the tissues!! But judging from what a few other people have said, the ending is sad? I will most likely wait to watch it on DVD if I can so I can blubber away to my heart's content! ;)
  21. Recently stayed in Orange with a lovely couple who run a B&B (in Clifton Grove). Lovely ensuite room, delicious breakfast, and heaps of space. The acerage is fully fenced, except the front gate doesnt shut (a little ways down the front) because the driveway is higher than the gate - I think they will fix this in the near future so might be worth a call if that is the only thing that is important to you - If so they also have a fenced off tennis court space with a huge new shed if you are going out. Oh... and the bonus? Fur-kids welcome inside, and fur-host Landy (JRTx?) is an old hand at welcoming his guests http://www.orange-ns...GroveBandB.html ETA: photo.
  22. One of my girlfriends saw it last night... she said to take the tissues but to definitely go see it!!
  23. Thanks Weasels and Malteseluna and OP for slight hijack of thread...
  24. Who / how/ where is the testing done to determine a purebred's status? Is the pedigree of a dog only determined by paperwork and not genetics? Sorry... a little off topic! Genuinely curious...
