Border Collie Breeders Recommendations?
BC Crazy replied to bossyboo's topic in General Dog Discussion
You are a very fortunate girl poomother if your mentor is who I think it is. That smiley face gives it away I think :) I would love to be in your shoes but I'd never make a dog breeder. I'd love some guidence with dog handling from some with such experience as your mentor. They are a wealth of knowledge from all their experience with the breed. I'm jealous LOL -

When the time comes, you'll be fine pm cause I really don't think you have gone into breeding BC's on a whim by the way you have spoken. I have people say to me very often, " when can I move in" or " when I pass on im coming back as your one of your dogs", "this is doggie paradise" e.t.c. Why wouldn't you spoil your dogs every chance you get, it's a pitance to what they give you in return :) -

I am liking the sound of this. I am going to get myself a copy & read up I think Stella could benefit from it. -

I don't think any of the comments were "too harsh" IMHO. I have often wondered how people start off breeding. Not that I have any inclination to do so.It would be too heartbreaking for me if anything went wrong with the litter or when it comes time to sell the puppies. I just think I could part with any of them So I would be broke in a very short time. Not that I would think there would be much, if any money to be made when done correctly. With all the vet bills & alike. So I am very thankful to all the reputable & dedicated breeders out there who I think just do a amazing job. -

Border Collie Breeders Recommendations?
BC Crazy replied to bossyboo's topic in General Dog Discussion
In the original post I was under the impression that these people were looking to buy a BC puppy. I must of been mistaken cause next thing they want to breed them. I'm a little at a loss with this one now but it is probably just me -
Thats a hard one KM as every dog is different. My 2 get roughly 60% premium dry food & 40% raw. They seem to go best on that ratio. Mine are both desexed & get 6 to 7 km's walk per day. I think you just have to play around with the ratio's a bit & see what work's best for your dog. It took me ages to get it right but they both look the best I've seen them so I have got it right. Hope I was of some help :)

We are very luck with ticks here with them then cause 'touch wood' they aren't nearly as bad as you poor guys have them up there then. The only time either of mine have had a tick was when we went to QLD on a four day trip. Stella got one small one on her nose but that was it all last summer. You are still getting them now, wow, how awful for you. I HATE them with a passion. The vet told me to put Advantix on every 3 weeks over winter but that is "here". And god YES everybody please still be vigilent like Mystiqview said. Go over your dogs everyday too !! :)

Whilst i agree with what you are saying thundercat, it is not just BYB's dogs who end up in the pound. Recently an absolutely beautiful little 4 month old fella has come to our park and he was from the pound. Original buyers decided he was too much work so dumped him there. Pound called registered breeder from which this pup came not more then 2 months previous and guess what? Registered breeder didn't want to know abt it, they had their money. Luckily for this beautiful little boy he is now with a wonderful family who love him dearly. Yes puppy farms and byb are a problem with offloading to whoever, but it annoys me when ppl say that ONLY byb dogs end up there. Yes, this is true too. There are good & bad in all & that includes registered breeders, sadly enough. I'd like to think there wouldn't be very many careless reg. breeders out there that last any length of time though. That is a very sad story about that poor little bloke. I am so glad he found a loving new home. My rescue boy was a pure breed & I had him 14.5 years, beautiful dog he was so yes it does happen but I think the % would be slim IMHO. -

THIS!!! At least those with a mentor have a fighting chance of doing it CORRECTLY!!! Putting two random dogs together and letting them go at it and having cute little bundles 63 days later does NOT a breeder make! If they do ALL the health testing required, for this breed it's hip/elbow scoring, CEA,CL,TNS dna tests and goinioscopy testing. Not to mention the careful consideration put into pedigrees so you don't double up on any problems like Epilepsy etc, then by all means breed away! My guess is BYBers do either ZERO or very very few of these! Exactly !! -

I second Nahrof. I don't know many border collie breeders, but I do know the breeders of Nahrof BC's - if I was going to ever get a BC, this is where I would go. Those Nahrof people are not too shabby at all  -

Couldn't agree more thundercat. Leave the breeding to the experts. Excellent post tc. -

Yes I thought this was an older post dancinbcs & you make a very good point about "just wanting a pet" or going to a breeder that just "breeds pets" because there are some excellent breeders of show quality dogs that have amazing temps & not all the puppies in every litter are "show quality" puppies & those littey's who don't quite make the grade can make the most amazing pets. The other advantage of buying a puppy of this standard you are assured that all the necessary health checks etc are done. They just don't bred puppies for the hell of it or to make money. The litters just don't happen, they are very well planned from what I can gather. They breed puppies to improve the lines & to breed standards. So yes, you usually have to wait a while if you want to buy a puppy this way but I would not do it any other way cause they are soooo worth the wait. Peace of mind is a good thing too. I wonder if bossyboo did ever end up buying a puppy ?? -
Another big Booster Bath fan here :)

I can only comment on the area in which I live & ticks are more prevalent over the summer months but they are still around in winter that is why I apply Advatnix every 3 weeks & not monthly. I never apply monthly cause we are never tick free here. I check both of mine at least daily. If you use a Preventic collar they work O.K. I have heard though I have never been able to use them because both of mine swim daily & the collar are ineffective once they are wet. You can't wash your dog for 48 hours after you apply Frontline/Advantix either & as Mystiqview said they are absorbed through the skin so make sure when you apply them that you part the hair first & put onto the skin & if you have a large dog I usually dot some on top of shoulders & some a bit further along their back but not too far along as you don't want them to be able to lick it :)

Another Unwanted Pet Shop Puppy
BC Crazy replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
OMG, some people never cease to amaze me & truley make me very angry. How bloody reckless & thoughtless could one be. Hopefully this little FELLA finds a caring & loving home & MAYBE a little bit more than 10 mins of the their precious time for a cuddle. Thanks for coming to the rescue Dogmad. -
Not sure why she is giving her milk she doesn't need that she needs a high protein/high fat food.
-
Why is your sister giving Misty milk?
-
To help prevent tick's Frontline must be applied every 2 weeks & to be honest I don't find it very effective. Advantix has worked miles better for us but again must be applied every 2 weeks. I apply it every 3 weeks in winter as ticks aren't quite so prevalent when the temp. drops :) You have to remove them off her if possible they don't just die.
-
Totally agree Frodo's mum. I wish I hadn't popped back in to see how she is going cause it just makes me sick to the core. I would have had her that fast to the vet it would of made your head spin but then again I would never ever have let Misty get into the poor state she is in in the first place, my sisters dog or not
-
RIP little miss Cookie girl. Run free now You will never be forgotten, you touched the hearts of many, including mine No one can ever hurt you again now so you can rest easy & pain free. Hopefully we will meet one day, till then have tonnes of fun girl. Your so sadly missed little one but I think you were just too special for this place

Do People With Full Coated Breeds Use Coats In Winter?
BC Crazy replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Both of mine have a unlined rain coats for walks when it is raining heavily or sometimes they like to be outside during a rainy day. But really a double coated breed wouldn't need a coat for warmth IMO. They would get to hot. -
I found it was the rice in BH that didn't agree with my boy. He is grain intolerant so grain-free diet now & you wouldn't think it was the same dog from his over all appearance to his endurance & beautiful shiny coat.

Love the idea "lets get a Spritz" but how do I break it to my OH ! LOL !
