  1. We had two boys done at the same time (testes removed, scrotal sack left intact). For a short while after, the sack looked far larger empty than when occupied due to swelling. Within a few months though you could barely see it at all and that was only if you were looking for it. It will shrink unless you had prosthetics put in. Edited to add ours were 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 at the time.
  2. Too young. The pup goes through an important development period in this time, learning social skills from the dam and littermates. Although 8 weeks is the usual minimum age, 10-12 weeks would be better from a developmental point of view. I am less than impressed (trying to be polite here) with backyard or oops breeders that get rid of the pups at 5-6 weeks just because they're now weaned. Bad owner, bad bad owner!
  3. Matilda was being walked to the gym where her owner was so he could walk home with her. It was supposed to be a surprise. Because of one idiot owner was so cowardly he took off as soon as he rounded up the dogs, a very valuable guide dog was killed and a young man lost his best friend, partner and his partner's eyes. What I'd like to see happen to that idiot is too impolite to say in a public forum. Not all service/ assistsnce dogs owners are as mobile as others. Sometimes having some else take the dog out for an off duty walk is very rewarding and relaxing for the dog as they can just be a dog and do dog things like sniffing etc, things they shouldn't do on duty.
  4. We use goat bones. Judging by the way our lot demolish them, I'd say they're a hit.
  5. If you find them (or would like to share an order to save on postage) please let me know.
  6. It is a tough beautiful plant but it's also poisonous to dogs. I am currently trying to find a list of plants that are safe for dogs so I can submit it to the property manager but all I seem to find are poisonous plants. It's a slow process trying to find something hardy, not poisonous to dogs, can cope with a bit of canine watering, cope with less than two hours sun a day and can be planted next to a wall or fence. It doesn't help me but I did find this story on a couple who designed a yard around their dogs: http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s2872551.htm
  7. What link, I seem to be missing something? I should have said recommendation not link. I googled it and found this: http://www.dogbootsactive.com/
  8. Tigerjack thanks for the link. We've tried a number of boots but have problems with twisting when running. The boots in your link appear to address this issue. I'll definitely email them and see what they can do for us.
  9. I think it's just marketing hype. Having said that we do feed a product labelled as holistic, not because of any perceived 'holistic' benefit but solely for the ingredients.
  10. Tonight it was reported by seven news Melbourne as a pitbull cross. No photos of it though.
  11. Costs include: Dog Import permit Import vaccinations Boarding in US if required Export agent fees (if using one) Import agent fees (if using one) Crate for flight Flight Australian quarantine Quarantine playtime visitor service (if desired) Onforward domestic flight if required
  12. The number of people I meet that swear Alsatians and GSDs are two separate breeds surprises me too. These people also don't seem interested in a history lesson. No, GSDs are not uncontrollable vicious dogs. This was from a woman with an out of control toddler, directed at the calm GSD by my side in a shop.
  13. I've also been told they are an abomination, a worthless mutt and that they shouldn't exist. I've been told by others they are just a GSD with a different name just so we can get more money for the pups. Apparently they are also a dog with no purpose. These comments are all just from this year :-(
  14. White Swiss Shepherd Dogs are not the same as white German Shepherds. They are separate breeds with different structures and temperaments. They are not, as one person recently told me, 'GSD scraps' :-(
  15. In the Mornington shire the number of dogs depends on the yard size. You need a permit for more than two. We have one for four on a suburban block. The permit application includes a fee, a ranger inspection and a check with the neighbours.
  16. What possible reason could they have for keeping his collar? Isn't that stealing as the collar is the property of his family? I just cannot see the logic in anything about this whole sorry case. Nothing that BCC did made any sense, even when they were given a face saving way to resolve the situation (US sanctuary).
  17. I cannot fathom why the council will not return Lennox's body to his family. It makes me wonder what the council could be trying to hide (eg condition of his body, date of death). By cremating (which the family might not want) and sending the ashes back in the mail, what are they hiding and what evidence is being destroyed in the process? Could the council be charged with unauthorised destruction of property or tampering with evidence?
  18. RIP at the Rainbow Bridge Lennox. The world will not forget you. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/family/pets/9391766/Lennox-the-dog-humanely-put-to-sleep.html
  19. I was told it has at least a 12 month shelf life and doesn't have to be stored in the fridge. Agree on the price - one litre left my credit card screaming.
  20. Good idea. I'll try a few around here. Always handy to have in the medicine box.
  21. I did try asking to buy it without a consult but they insisted on one to confirm that it was for the dog and not for me. I grabbed the dog out of the car and brought him into the consult room where....well let's just say the vet had absolutely no problems confirming scouring.
  22. On a related note. Is Scourban only available through the vet? I'd like to have some on standby but don't want to have to pay the $55 consult fee and deal with a dog with the runs in the car when I know the cause. If the cause was unknown, I'd take them in and have no qualms about the consult fee.
  23. They aren't required to wear a vest or anything identifying them as an AD under the DDA. Dogs from AD organisations will be wearing that organisation's gear and ADs registered under the QLD state legislation will be displaying a particular badge but that's it. Depending on the task the dog performs to mitigate the effect of the person's disability, there are a few organisations that will help train and test the dog to that organisation's standard.
  24. I'd be really interested to hear what the ranger thinks regarding the dog rushing at you while it was on it's property and you were passing across the road. You could pose it to them as a hypothetical question if you don't want to make an actual report yet. I have two reactive dogs that have been attacked. One has been attacked on two occassions by dogs running off the property onto the road so I understand your response to stop and wait until the situation is safe before continuing. That's what we do too. Desensitising training and working within the dog's threshold takes backwards steps if another dog not under your control enters that space when your own dog is not ready for it. Crossing the road shows an attempt by the OP to keep the reactive dog within it's threshold. I expect that when I take my reactive dogs for a walk down the street, people in the street will have their dogs on a leash as required by law and that dogs on a property will stay there. Sadly time and time again this is not the case and when I remind these offenders of the law, I'm the one that gets the dirty looks.
  25. The letter from her doctor is not evidence that the dog is an AD. A service provider can refuse her access/ service if she doesn't have evidence or if the dog has poor hygiene or is behaving in a disruptive or inappropriate manner.
