  1. The name is something the shelter staff came up with or his new owner. They guessed his age based on his general health.
  2. Your dog will give you calming signals ie: turning head away, hooding their eyes, ears flat against head or drooping, licking their lips a lot, excessive panting. These are calming signals your dog is giving you because of the body language you are displaying which tells them you are angry or annoyed about something. They do not understand what you are annoyed or angry about but they want you to calm down. It is not guilt or remorse.
  3. I am with Medibank for my younger dog which I got the day she came home. I have gotten back double what I paid in premiums so I am thankful I had it, that was 2 claims worth, I didn't really have dramas getting my money. It just renewed so I must check if they have changed my policy like PIA have but I did have a look when I got the renewal and nothing stood out. I wish I had insurance for my older dog the day she came home. Between her knee op, her shoddy hips, skin conditions, demodex mites etc she has well and truly cost me $6000 over 4 years in non routine vet care so not including desexing, vaccs, flea treatments etc and I am sure that will probably triple in her lifetime.
  4. A deposit is for the security of both parties. If you place a deposit on something and then change your mind you lose your deposit that is how it works. If you were going to buy a car and you put a deposit on it so the seller wouldn't sell it to someone else etc etc and you then changed your mind about the purchase the seller of the car would not refund you the deposit. Put yourself in that situation, someone says they are going to buy something from you and give you a deposit, you turn away other purchasers and take down advertisements then the buyer turns around changes their mind and expects you to refund the deposit....you have to readvertise and go through the process of having people look at the item again. This is an even longer process for a breeder because they don't just sell pups to anyone like you would a car. You null and void the point of a deposit if you have to refund it if the other party changes their mind. I believe the breeder is being extremely reasonable. She will have to re advertise and spend time vetting new families, time is money. ETA - The added transport costs are definitely a pain but to change your mind over $50 is pretty ridiculous and really points out the fact that she clearly isn't that fussed on whether she gets the pup or not. If she really wanted the pup she could have gone ahead with the purchase and fought the breeder over the $50 bucks (something so insignificant it isn't funny) later. The breeder had already discounted her $100 off the price of the pup. And the breeder can't help that she had a family emergency.
  5. Can't really comment but just wanted to point out some friends of mine pulled a paralysis tick off their 8 mo Cav this morning. They get trick treatments, tick off in the their water and he had a tick bath only 36 hours ago, so please please check your dogs over every day no matter what prevention you use.
  6. LMAO - Seeing Dave get absolutely hammered by the Bullmastiff community!! Go Girls!
  7. Argh he is just missing the point!
  8. Huh, that is.... interesting. I suppose it's the 'teach a dog to bark so you can teach him to shush' philosophy, but I'm not a fan. I have dogs that pull on the jog to the park and not on the way back, and the way down I get much more of a sore back and calves than being able to jog at my own pace on the way back. I also had a trainer once who had huskies and said that taking them sledding made training a loose lead walk muuuch more difficult I agree tho that he seems to be taking this onslaught of passionate dog ladies on his FB and email quite well See I see some of his comments as feigning politeness more than actual politeness.
  9. Nicely said that he's a likeable person who seems to be taking criticisms without going ballistic. And he makes a fair comment in his FB reply that his interest is to avoid dogs getting into homes where there's not a match. But his comments do seem to imply that breed label is all explanatory....& if you avoid the ones he's listed....well, things will go well. The evidence , tho', continues to be how dogs are bred and raised links with how they'll tend to respond to humans & the world around them. And that applies to all dogs. That's most certainly true, it can apply to any breed as well, no matter how random (usually working breeds seem to be targeted the most though). It seems like only yesterday I was getting criticised by the puppy preschool I went to and told that I shouldn't have picked such a high-drive dog (a Swedish Vallhund ) and his excited barking at other dogs was a sure sign that he was going to turn into an unmanageable wreck by the time he turns two.. "if you even have him for that long". Dun dun dun. Really still dwelling on that.
  10. In his response to my comment it sort of reads that he will take it down, although it wasn't very clear so I am not sure if that is what he meant.
  11. FYI - Farmer Dave has posted a comment re: our criticism of him and has also responded to all facebook comments. If anyone is interested to see his responses head to his facebook page.
  12. I did email him but I have posted on his facebook wall as well. I think rather than linking this thread everyone here should just pop over to his facebook page and leave a politely worded, educated wall post about his inaccurate article. I am sure that will get his attention. Here is his FB page for anyone who is interested. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Farmer-Dave/128251427229221
  13. Wouldn't recommend Cam. Not sure of any others sorry.
  14. I just emailed Farmer Dave through the Contact page on his website. I suggest everyone here does the same.
  15. What a load of rubbish. And maybe someone should tell Farmer Dave that Bullmastiff's were not bred for fighting but were actually bred to accompany gamekeepers on their rounds and protect large properties from poachers, they were also bred to take down and hold a man down but to not attack them. Maybe Farmer Dave should do some proper research before writing articles about things he doesn't know.
  16. An incident was reported but because they didn't follow up your son got bitten, and as said previously what if that had been an elderly women, a smaller child, a women and a baby etc, it could have been much more serious. That is really poor effort on behalf of the council and I would be making a formal complaint to council about rangers lack of action on the previous report. I hope the lady decides to be responsible and I hope that the council slap her with dangerous dog orders and fines her. As DeeLee said we have hysteria in Vic about Pitbulls but here are two dogs who have been reported for rushing and then reported for biting and it took them 4 days to even get out there to have a look. That is just really ridiculous.
  17. You can get a report from the doctor who treated him after the bite, to state that it was in fact your son that he treated for a dog bite. Pretty poor effort to be honest. If it was that important for a confirmed picture to be taken then a ranger should have come out to take their own picture of the wound. Whether or not a ranger is sick, someone else should have been assigned to the case when he got ill so that things were not left without being done for a week after the attack.
  18. Crossposted on facebook a couple hours ago, on my page as well as several other pages. Fingers crossed she either shows up somewhere soon or someone calls with info.
  19. there is something about greyhounds that kinda creep me out. Weird i know but hey what can i say Have you met any? If not I would highly recommend you contact a local Greyhound rescue like GAP and go out to meet some of the dogs, once you meet a greyhound that "creepiness" goes away and they really grow on you.
  20. Another vote for a retired greyhound. They are just beautiful natured dogs. So gentle and so so sweet. As others have said with 4 kids an older dog would be a much better option. Good luck.
  21. @ the Boxer - It looked so confused! How on earth it missed the darn deer running around for 15 seconds is anyone's guess! WOW @ the GSP what an amazing run!
  22. Permission to repost on Facebook? I am in QLD and know a lot of doggie people.
