I was brought up with Borders (in the UK) and had them for a while in Victoria. They are lovely little dogs but, like all terriers, can be independent little *****s, and can be prone to going off and hunting on their own sometimes. They are great for keeping your rat and mouse populations down! Their coats need a fair bit of attention to keep them looking sleek and tidy. Having said that, I love them but not as easy to live with as the working bred springers.

Great for old girls to catch that elusive drip! Also useful for covering half the puppy box - pups start their toilet training without a lot of effort or copious sheets of newspaper or pee pee pads Very easy to wash and quick to dry

Put them somewhere that they can't escape from

update; Staffordshires going to court - rescue still refusing to return
JRG replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
I agree, it ought not to be an issue but it is because people do not realise that they need to add their dog to a register in Australia when they arrive from overseas. Only last year in DOL there was an example of a chipped dog from overseas found in SA - the chip was read, but could not be found on any of the Australian registers. Luckily, dog and owner were reunited but not because it was chipped. -

It can be more complicated than that because not only are there four other registers in Australia (three when NPR and CAR amalgamate) but some dogs are microchipped overseas. Some dogs are on more than one register (and not always with the same contact information) and some are not on a register at all because it is possible for individuals to buy chips (on line) and chip their dogs themselves so side-tracking the system. nett result, it ought to be easy, but it's not -

It happens because the five registries do not all talk to each other and jealously guard their databases. Until this ridiculous situation gets sorted out, problems will occur unfortunately. -
because the bone with the damaged growth plate stopped growing, so, because the other one would continue to grow and the two bones are connected, she would have finished up with a very bowed leg (like a bow and arrow type bow; ie one bone straight but short and the other longer but bow shaped). Does that make sense?
-
Yes. I think she had a wedge cut out but no pin. Can't remember if it was the ulna or the radius but the other one acted as a splint to keep the leg in position as she grew.
-
I had a pup do this to her front leg by jumping down a step on to concrete. The growth plate closed prematurely and she finishd up with a slightly twisted leg. No good for showing, but perfectly functional.

Pointer litter 7/2/16 - trying to trace breeder
JRG replied to gillbear's topic in Breeders Community
Ask DogsNSW what Pointer litters were registered or try their newsletter. PM me if you want me to look through the Viic newsletters. -
Only have ultra to confirm pregnancy (like Barat) No good for numbers. You need to have an X-ray at 7plus weeeks fit that

Over the years I have found that it is nearly always more expensive to take a dog from Aus to NZ than coming the other way. Don't ask me why. I guess you know that they charge either the cubic volume of the crate or the total weight of the dog + crate (whichever is the most expensive!). Can't win!!!
-
I understand that Barry Haywood has retired and is no longer in practice
-
You tell your dog to sit and stay !! then lift it into its crate in the car. If it has been working all day there is no problem. I never bought one, just made them myself. In those days, old mail bags were popular. It really is a most efficient system for drying off, wet dirty dogs.
-
Used similar when I was field trialing spaniels. They are really good particularly if the dog is hot,wet and tired as they dry off as they travel home in the car. Just leave them in the bag and they are clean and dry by the time you get home!
-
If you re doing it yourself, just make sure that you set aside a day to spend at the airport, trailing round from department to department collecting departmental "stamps", talking to lots of people, waiting in queues etc etc getting hungrier and hungrier and more frustrated and (most important) keep every piece of paper you collect on the way. I like to take friend so that at least I have someone to talk to! I brought on three from the same litter - not all for me - and eventually paid GST on just one of them but it was a lengthy process.

I am a Snooza fan. (had an Orvis at one time which eventually fell to pieces - see the +++ for the Snooza) My dogs really love them - so cosy and also very easy to take the covers off and wash everything including the stuffing! Also easy to reassemble unlike some of the other beds. +++ the bonus is that you can get them repaired if you have a vandal!!
-
I had a concrete one at one point - the dogs could not tip it over, but they successfully moved it round the yard and "dug" in the water to empty it! I abandoned it in favour of a bucket fastened to the wall of the house which is still in use today!

metal 44 gallon drum. Have had mine for years. I got ones that had had olives in, but I suspect they are imported in plastic now. Unlike the plastic ones, they are mouse, rat and inquisitive dog proof!

apologies my computer does not want to play this morning!

I went but did not stay long What did I learn? 1. the department thinks that it is easier to register ALL dog breeders because then anyone not registered is illegal by default 2..that you do NOT have to use the super kennels you have to build, your dogs can still live in the house - but you have to build them anyway. 3. that it was probably not a good idea to call it a DAB because the term business has connotations not envisaged in this legislation not much else.but then I left before the meeting to decide on an action plan which was due to take place after the dept staff left. sorry

I use a Road Refresher (non spill) bowl for water - even a spaniel can't get it's ears wet when drinking. Qualify that to add that I did have one baby who loved to jump in it and give himself a shower! Got it off the net, but some pet shops have them.

A draft action plan for Improving the Welfare of Animals in Victoria is open for comment <https://animalwelfarevic.economicdevelopment.vic.gov.au/have-your-say/documents/42170/download> If you want to have your say, you will need to get your skates on as the period for comment closes on Tuesday 11th October. I've not read it yet, so can't comment on the contents, but, from the photos, it covers cows, goats etc as well as dogs. Enjoy
