    Advice Please

Your puppy could be doing this for many reasons such as: 1) It's under something so it feels threatened when you try and get her out......try introducing puppy to a crate as an alternative method. 2) Puppy wasn't socialised with humans much when still with the litter. 3) Poor temperment (poor breeding) I would reccomend you speak with a behaviourist to suss it out whilst pup is still young.
  2. I love seeing foster dogs get the chance to do things like this! Good on ya, I hope his training continues in leaps and bounds.
  3. I have a Dane and I just walk her in the shower.
  4. mmmmm there are some people who have done, depends how big your dog is. Have you considered that your dog may be destructive whilst inside whilst you're at work? Also it's not terribly safe....dog may eat something it shouldn't, might chew a wire it shouldn't etc etc. Unless this is a dog that can be trusted inside etc. Doggies do fine out in the yard whilst their family is at work given that they have enough to do. Is there a reason the dog can't be outside.
  5. That's not fair, how would you feel if someone went straight to the council first without talking to you? A morning walk won't cure the barking, it will help.
  6. If I was your neighbour I would be extremely upset if you did anything without coming and talking to me first, I may not know there is a problem or I may not know the extent of the problem or I may not be familiar with ways to help my dog stop annoying the neighbours. In regards to being locked in a cage, you mean the dog is in a kennel run?

    Growling Puppy

Don't 'just' watch the tail, the tail can be decieving. Granted some puppies make growling noises when they play, but when they are resourse guarding this is not acceptable. You should be able to take anything out of your dogs mouth without getting bitten. I would be working with the dog giving treats or using clicker training when the dog is giving you the behaviour you find acceptable.

    He's Humping!

Do you think that's a bit rough for a young puppy? Verbal repremand and standing up would have been enough don't you think? Maybe I would alway use the command above, it is what an adult dog would not to stop the behavour, so I do too My adult dog eats poop, doesn't mean I would do it to try and connect with him more. I think sometimes we have to realise we're not dogs, yes we strive to be leaders but then you also have to understand the different between leadership and gaining respect from a dog they don't come part and parcel. My opinion.
  9. LOL sounds like pup is having a fantastic time!!!!! If it's not your idea of fun then go for a Crate or Puppy Pen
  10. Not a traditional way, but there's a few people here who have had success with Optimum putting and keeping the weight on.
  11. We use small amounts of cheese. Some dogs can experience an upset tummy with too much dairy. My kids will do just about anything for cheese.

    He's Humping!

I have a slightly different opinion to others. I believe at this age that simple over excitment can lead to humping, some does hump due to dominance (even submissive dogs will hump a dominant dog to see where it stands, it's not just about dominant dogs humping the leader), some hump due to sexual reasons and some hump things like bed covers etc. Simply stand up and walk away paying no attention to the dog. I certainly would not be scruffing such a young dog, actually I wouldn't scruff any dog, I personaly feel if you have to lay your hands on a dog in such a manner to need to re-evaulate your training methods and what you're trying to achieve......respect v leadership. They're a ball of excitment at this age, they can't just learn things overnight either, things take time.

    Panadol?

Yep it can cause Ulcers, however in clinical trials this was only when used excessively (exceeding the reccomended dossage). And the same as with humans, when taken on an empty stomach etc... I still take it, but the dog can't tell me when he has a sore tummy & it's hard to work out the exact dose for dogs, so I prefer to err on the side of caution when other drugs are available. But if it was all that was on offer, i'd go for it (but a smaller dose, just incase) Why would you give dogs medication on an empty stomach? Too hard to work out dosage? You shouldn't be giving it to a dog without the advice of a vet to start with. We haven't had any issues with it so far *shrugs*

  18. Your absolutely correct, the medication doesn't fix any behavioural problems, it gives you an 'in' so to speak to work with the dog. It wasn't clear at the time whether the problems we were having were learned behaviours or genetic. We were also working under the direction of Robert Holmes who is a Vet & Behaviourist. We were also on Beta Blockers which were only to be used short-term. Our situation was slightly different, being a Dane we couldn't give the full dose and were resricted in some sense to what we could use which would be effective. Trying different anti-depressants isn't encouraged, it take some time for them to 'kick in' and then you have a ween off period as well. Switching medications can bring on other issues.
  19. When toilet training, I simply don't bring them back inside until they've done their business because I need to give that priase to them. Considering puppies need to go on average every 30 minutes and after meals and waking up, it's not that long to have to wait around when you weigh it up against having a teenage dog that still isn't toilet trained. If puppy has an upset tummy this can upset the whole toilet training rituals. As CavNrott said, I'd also be changing the diet to something much more higher quality especially for a developing puppy.

    Panadol?

Our vet has said that we can give Nurofen if we really need to (Dog with HD) but really if the dog is in pain and you haven't asked the vet yet that would be your first point of call. I would have absolutely no idea what the dosage rate would be for a small dog as the vet gave us a dosage rate for a large dog.
  21. A previous dog of mine went onto Prozac and Beta Blockers, costed about $30 a week from memory. Sadly no difference was made with the medication. Just like humans, dogs need to be weened of Prozac too, it's a big decision to make.
  22. I've used Optimum and I wouldn't hesitate in reccomending it. It would be the only supermarket brand I would ever buy, well I'd also buy Natures Gift to use of I ran out of raw.
  23. ummm, wow, what to say to thant. I couldn't help myself but to e-mail them just to check. This would be considered an act of crulity by the NZ SPCA.
  24. Just coat yourself head to toe in the 'Stop Chew' Spray, works a treat LOL
