  1. I loved it! I especially loved Paddy the Cattle Dog that I and Winterpaws got to work with....he worked so well.....he's available for adoption as well (that is if he isn't a foster faliure ) It was a fantastic workshop and I hope Steve runs it again so others can benefit from his knowledge & techniques. I thing I noticed for myself is that I had lost the enthusiam when working with my own dog which is so critical so it was a good wake up for me to start working with my dog the way I used to that kinda died out over time. Ok, whose calls for a workshop on 'recall' and 'down stays' hehehehe
  2. I find it boring as the dogs get unmotivated doing the same thing week in week out. However at the Handlers Workshop today with Steve at K9 I learnt some different motivational methods which I'm definately going to give a go!
  3. Please don't use Bark Busters or any other francise business. Please contact Steve at K9 Force and he should know someone in Perth to assist you. When dealing with aggression you need to work with someone with a lot of experience in the area - Bark Busters are not, just like DogTech they have the same methods for everydog and you need an individual assesment and training/treatment plan.
  4. I'm a complete fan of prongs if the owner has been taught how to use one. I think the restriction is that you need to buy one from a licensed seller? I'm sure Steve will pop in and let you know the details.
  5. nope they don't train the dog not to pull, if you put it back on a flat collar it would still pull.
  6. I can understand that some people are conditioned to having their pets outside. BUT If you did have him inside sleeping it would be unlikely that he'd be barking. Sure it may take him a week to settle into sleeping inside as he may be a bit unsettled, but in the long run you probably won't have those 5am wake ups! Why not give it a go? Or how about crate train him and have the crate in your bed room. *sniff* I don't know what I'd do without my fur kids constantly around me, but that's just me.
  7. We feed Billinghurst patties ordered from BARF NSW. I like them, coat condition is good, overall health is good.
  8. I'd be interested to know where you boarded. My directors (in Sydney) put their dogs in boarding and training at Christmas too and the dogs came back very happy and very well trained and the owners recieved training lessons as well and will get ongoing training assistance for that dog. Boarding & Training combined is not for everyone however it was the right choice for my directors, we forget on this forum that we are more knowledgable here due to what we learn here, your typical dog owner isn't generably as knowledgeable and woldn't know a good training method from a bad one. Maybe this dog just didn't handle boarding very well, many dogs don't board well and many do board well. If you're not happy ring them and discuss.
  9. Are you absolutely positive that they are completely illegal and just not restricted? I use a stretchy scruncy thingie aroundmine when I go to where people will ask questions, I get annoyed with the evil looks so I just cover it.
  10. Don't feel guilty, these things happen and it's not actually your fault. I'm sure pooch will be back to their old selves in a couple of weeks.
  11. Yep there is one, the one we have here is the one you can spray on furniture and is also safe to use on wounds etc. You'll find them at most larger pet stores, your vet would probably have some too.
  12. Leila has had it, first time it seemingly went away after anti-botics but then the next week it had developed into bronchitis. Turbo had it when we first got him too and was sorted out after anti-botics. Typically if you notice the signs straight away and get on to it they get over it pretty fast. Both my kids are vaccinated against kennel cough now.
  13. I know what it's like! My 60kg sook runs and hides under the bed when he sees me pick up the dog shampoo! What we did was entice him closer and closer to the bathroom with cheese, I think it took about 3 days to actually get him into the bathroom, then I would get him into the bathroom and then standing in the shower without the water running everyday and praised him and give him treats. Then the water - one those hose adapters and using luke warm water....starting the water at his feet and working up, lot's of praise here! Then after he's towel tried a bigger treat. He's now walk into the shower, he's not a great fan but he's not as terrified as he once was.
  14. I was quoted well over $700 as they would have to put the dog under and being a Dane that of course makes it more expensive.
  15. Sorry, I wasn't referring to DogTech as animal Behaviourists, I was meaning the new one you find.
  16. I would really not reccomend this unless your behaviourist says it's ok as one little error could you send you flying back in your progress.
  17. Why don't you contact Steve at K9 Force, he's bound to know someone in your area that he can reccomend to you. Just wanted to say, some things dogtech do are part of the nilif method and some are just pointless and outdated.
  18. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek Dog Tech. There are many people who have used them here including myself. They have the same 2 week training program for every dog they do a session with. The word 'dominance' is way over used and their program is to knock out the so-called dominance. So I guess you're doing the following or similar program that they always use: 1) No walks for 2 weeks 2) Teathering dog whilst it's inside 3) No sleeping in the bedroom and not on the furniture 4) Only one pat to the top of the head to show you are dominant during backyard training 5) You must eat before the dog and during this time the dog must be able to see its food 6) Only pats when the dog does something to deserve it and only to the head 7) Train the dog to heel by walking around in circles in your backyard and suddenly stopping and giving a check to the collar. I use the term 'emotionaly harsh' methods of training for the owner with Dog Tech. With Steve at K9 Force I never felt guilty or bad with any of his methods, his methods work and work fast because he actually knows about dogs unlike a money hungry franchise.
  19. Sounds like you're doing a great job with pooch. I know what it's like to have a strong dog! ;) And a dog with no manners, have you tried the NILIF methods? It sounds like you're using it to a certaim degree at the moment. Everyone has different opinions on what is most suitable for a pulling dog and a strong dog, I guess just research each one and find one that is the best for you and pooch. For Turbo, he's fear aggressive, I need him to feel safe and I need to be able to have him under control at all times. We recently had a session with Steve at K9 Force here in Sydney, I think he's excellent so does Turbo. Turbo now heels with just one word, when I got him, he would pull you down the road and if you saw another dog, gawd it was all on! Turbo is on a prong collar, this is the best decision for myself anf Turbo, my initial thoughts on prong collars wasn't positive based on what they looked like but with further education about them, I find them one of the most gentlist ways of teaching your dog and allowing it to make it's own decisions. Love to hear how you and pooch get on. I'm not sure how big your dog is, but if you look on the Black Dog website for sizing and if your dog would fit Turbo's old Black Dog Halter you're welcome to have it.
  20. There's been many discussions on halti's in the past, over all they'r enot terribly popular when it comes to training a dog not to pull, people have different reasons for not being a fan of a halter or harness. I have tried both the halti and gentle leader and I like neither of them, if you must use a halter I would reccomend the new black dog head halter which has the lead clip at the back of the head, I have previously used it on my dane prior to going onto a prong collar. Are you able to get to dog training classes to teach you how to teach your pooch how to heel?
  21. Well if they don't want to train their dog I don't think anything will help, even sporn harnesses and halties, all dogs learn to manipulate them after time. If anything I would suggest they head to training and learn how to train their dog. And of course like many others here I would highly reccomend Steve at K9 Force here in Sydney who is a miracle worker with pulling dogs and pretty much anything else!
  22. Are you seriously saying that there is no benefit of a Clinical Trial? A true clinical trial is held over a 10 year period, this period of time is so you can see if there are any later effects of the treatment. I think you totally took me wrong, I've studied in the area and endorse complimetary medicines, however my background is Science so I can see two sides of the coin. Are you currently studying with an Accrediated (by the Government) Private College? Because there is only one in Australia with full accreditation by the government & industry bodies. I appreciate your passion for natural medicines but quite simply we're not as advanced with them as some people would like to think. I'd be all for a natural cure for AIDS/Caner or any other dreadful disease and you see the difference is I'd conduct a trial and then provide the results free for anyone to do what they wish with them, I wouldn't expect money or a patent. Anyway, that's me on this discussion because it's begining to be like :flogdeadhorse:
  23. I implore you not to reccomend peoplpe take their dogs off prescribed medications to try natural medicines unless you can provide a commercial clinical trial report, this is completely irresponsible & dangerous. Having studied in this field no Accred. Practioner would EVER reccomend this unless the patient was terminal and commerical medications were no longer of any benefit. So AIDS can be cured through natural cocktails but the world isn't allowed to find out yet because the drug companies won't make any money.....well that's an interesting one, can you share with us the link to that clinical trial report? Anyhow thumbs up to RR for slight aniexty issues.
  24. You can't actually be a sceptic with using scents to cause different states of mind because scientificaly it is proven using mind maps to show the areas of the brain reacting to different scents. I think it is hallarious that some people are sceptic about using batch flower remedies and natural remedies because over 70% of commerical medication contain these items, very few commerical medications are 100% synthetic. There's no doubt that there are weird ass people in the world promoting cocktails of natural remedies to do amazing and unbelievable things, general rule of thumb, if it's too good to be true, it is. 2nd rule of thumb, natural medication are 'complimentary' they should be used in conjunction to taking prescribed medications and not instead of in any case higher than a mild level and any complimentary medication that is being taken with commerical medications should be okayed by your DR as sometimes they can clash ie. forget about taking horny goat weed or red bark extracts when you're on the pill unless you want to render your pill usless just like the affect anti-botics has on the pill. RR is a good product for mild aniexty, anything more than that you need to speak with your Vet/behavioirist.
