Try putting a piece of carpet under the tray to stop some noise, it it is likely to get wet use the outdoor carpet.. I also have a piece of this in the tray and it is quite snug so chewing it is harder but then mine do not chew.

We had a similar experience recently. There was a complaint made against us although it was not about the dogs. the complaint was so incredibly wrong it was laughable but the council people came to investigate it as they must. They told us that it was obviously a vexatious complaint and that would be recorded on the file so if there were any further complaints either along the same lines or from the same people they would be disregarded. If the ranger has seen your situation and is happy with it then you may find the situation recorded as a vexatious complaint. I guess it just makes you a little more cautious about what you do with the dogs when you are not at home. It sounds as though you have a narky neighbour but it amazes me what they hope to gain. As soon as the ranger comes out for an inspection he sees there is no problem and it then becomes obvious that the neighbour is wasting his time and telling porky pies about your situation.

You are right I did indeed, not only once but several times. Apologies to Leema

We have 2 acres and are allowed 2 dogs. For years we had a permit for more and then for some reason the council did not send the renewal for it. This was at a time when we inactive with breeding etc. Anyway our dog numbers went up to 4 which were all registered with the council just did not have a permit issued. For some reason 2 dogs were in my husbands name and 2 in mine and stupidly I said they could all be changed into one name. Of course they then twigged that I had 4 and needed a permit. The council sent a letter to each (6) of our adjoining neighbours seeking any objections. Only one neighbour replied and said they had no issue. We were granted our permit and it is renewed each year but when each dog dies we are required to advise the council and they reduce the number on the permit. I guess we could add another one but we do not wish to have any more than 3 now. The silly part is that if our block was subdivided into blocks the average size around here there could be at least 20 dogs on the land. I would take the advice someonewrote earlier and approach you neighbours at least seeking what sort of response the council is likely to receive if they ask. I do see the fence issue as a major one and maybe you will need to do something about that and also the size of your block which you cannot do much about. Good luck

Ideas For A Cheaper Dry Dog Food
Airedaler replied to RachelleBuck's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Supercoat mostly here. Also even cheaper is Uncle Albers and Great Barko - made by the same company I've had good results with both but do find the dogs tend to have a lot of rather unpleasant gas after eating these two. I have yet to find feeding raw cheap but do also feed raw chicken mince as well as some kibble. -
I think we would all feel concerned for the cat like Cougar does if the same happened to us. I, like some others am not a fan of cats but more so of the attitude of most cat owners I comne across. Our 3 Airedales are constantly baited by roaming cats. The owners have been warned time and time again. The reponse is that you cannot keep a cat locked up or contained! Well actually you can! I now have further clout to my warnings as my 11 year old killed a fox in our yard last week. It is ironical my breed of dogs were bred for vermin control and yet when they prove themself capable of the purpose they were bred for there is a hue and cry while at the same time show breeders are being told they should be breeding "fit for functio" go figure. Cougar the cat may well be OK, maybe just have superficial injuries and have gone off to lick it's wounds.

not sure I understand this post correctly we are after all on a PURE BREED forum and I hope this is said tongue in cheek! I thought it was obvious that it was. Apologies if I misunderstood. Unfortunately what is written is not always interpreted by readers as intended by the writer.

Vet Recommendation - Ferntree Gully, Vic
Airedaler replied to goldielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Strongly recommend Boronia Veterinary Clinic. I've delt with them for over 35 years now and have never had any cause for concern. I particularly like the "older" vets there but I guess that is because I have delt with them for so long. -

I agree with Aussie Dog. I also wonder if these tags would fill the requirement of Local Councils appropriate details to be shown.

Need Some Info On Breeding (stupid Byb)
Airedaler replied to tandn's topic in General Dog Discussion
Steve I love this approach and think it is a great one. I had someone (a younger person) call me the other day looking for a puppy and wanting to breed. A lot of what they said sounded warning sirens and In the past I may have kept it short and sweet. But then I thought 'where is our future?' and decided to talk. To explain a bit about what was involved and that while I may not end up having a puppy for them I would be happy to help them learn. What they do with the offer is up to them and you can't force someone to do something they are not willing to do, but at least I have offered a different path rather than closing and locking the gate. By providing non judgmental information (there is a difference between explaining why a particular path may have more positives and being judgmental) they then have knowledge on which to base decisions and can choose. I think you have the best approach. You are going to kill more flies with honey than with vinegar. Rather than put people's back up by telling them what they should or should not do this approach is going to, in many cases, have the same result but without giving the impression that "we" are superior - or at least some of us believe we are! At the end of the day who is to say the person the OP is about would not be just as particular as most ANKC breeders are. -
So would I.

By grass seeds I assume you mean the spear like ones that pull apart. Touch wood but I've not had any problem with these for years now. Our Airedales used to get them in their feet all the time and often we saw no sign of them until the dogs were licking at them and the seed had migrated from it's entry point. We had a run of the seeds going in between the paws and working their way up the leg. The worst we had was about 6 inches up the leg. A sure fire way to remove these. Our vet decided to try this method before he operated to remove the seed. Make up a VERY VERY saturated solution of sugar in water, just keep adding sugar to hot water for as long as you can get it to dissolve - 500g in about 400g of water is what we used. When the solution is cool soak some cottonwool in the solution and wrap around the seed point of entry, cover with plactic wrap and secure with clips or a rubber band and then cover the whole thing in a plastic bag. Try to keep this on for 24 hours or if not that long overnight may be OK. The poulticce will work on the grass seed and draw it out of the entry point. The one I mention above did come out over night. If necessary re apply a fresh poultice and leave it again. In the event that it does not work then the likelihood is that the seed will need surgical removal. Unfortunately this method is only suitable for seeds that enter where a poultice can be used, ears, eyes and noses will need other treament. Good luck

For Airedale Terriers the "bible" is The complete Airedale by Gladys Brown Edwards also the New Complete Airedale published later by the same author. There are also the breed club Year Books. The National Airedale Terrier Association in England has put one out every year since 1971. The Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria has just released their latest one which I have produced. this covers the period 1991 to 2010. These books are a great record of titles, awards and results as opposed to the books mentioned above which cover the breed as a whole, but still a valuable resource.

Ha ha, must tell my 11 year old Chequers that she should prefer soft cosy bedding to the doorway! In her case it has nothing to do with guarding or seeing what is going on around them it is simply where she wants to be. How do you know this? What do you think the advantage is to her sleeping in a door way? Lots of dogs sleep in doorways, far more than it just being accountable to a random coincidence. There are reasons why some dogs choose to sleep in doorways at some times. But it's not unusual for the owners to be unaware of why they might be doing it. In the same way that most people like to be in rooms with windows so they can see out, many dogs like to look out doorways - for them it's a window at dog height. Not odd or inexplicable, even if they can't talk to us and tell us why they chose that spot to rest. I don't think there is any advantage for her sleeping in the doorway she chooses other than she finds it comfortable. It is an internal door where she cannot see anything and has nothing to guard. I believe she chooses the spot she chooses simply because it suits her for whatever reason, much like she has done in every aspect of her life. As the senior dog in our household she has certain priviliges and one of them is that she is allowed to sleep where she chooses. Despite that soft cosy bedding is provided in a better position for her to see what is going on or where she could guard - which she does not do. Maybe I don't read her correctly but I don't need to analyse everything my dogs do. I'm happy to accept that is what they do and as long as we can all live with is all that matters. Have done pretty well for the last 40 years.

My suggestion is that you visit some dog shows and have a look at different breeds. You will see a huge range and will be able to speak to several breeders and owners of various breeds. Some will take your eye others not. It is my belief that the first thing that draws us to a dog is that we like the look of it. Very few people buy a dog thay do not like the look of, we then explore the good and bad of that breed and make a decision as to whether it is suitable for us. I think all dog people I know love the look of various breeds but for one reason or another discard them from their choice. I do not believe you should feel obligated to get an older dog. Many people seem to like to try and "guilt" people into saving an older dog. There is no doubt that a puppy is a steep learning curve for first time dog owners but the vast majority who take it on manage quite well. There are also at times massive challanges with an older dog too. If, however, that is what you would like to do and you think would be the best option then go for it! It kis your decision, no one elses. We all started somewhere, I venture to suggest MOST dog owners started with a puppy and together they learnt. Sure they stuffed up sometimes but that is the learning process. If you start with an already trained dog how are you going to learn the basics of living with a puppy? I fear for the pure bred world in the not too distant future as so many breeders want to put so many controls on the stock they breed. Protecting them is one thing. Controlling the aspects of ownership is another all together and had those controls been imposed on them when they started out then they would not have pure bred dogs in many cases. Best of luck with your searching, don't be in a hurry but be ready to make as informed decision as you can.

Iused the free Petplan one for my last litter (now 7 years ago) Before I organised it I contacted the puppy buyers and explained it to them and asked if they would like me to subscribe on their behalf given that they may have follow up from the insurers looking for further insurance policies. All the buyers said they would be interested in the free 6 week policy but as far as I'm aware none had any issues to claim and none took out further policies. From my point of view as a breeder it gave me a little breathing space. while I was confidient that would not be any problems the pups could take with them it did cover the new owners for anything that happened in that first 6 weeks while they were sorting having a new puppy out. If I was still breeding and this was available I would certianly use it however, I would never bother insuring my own animals.
