  1. I do think with the advent of Social media etc. breed clubs do not have the same appeal to people. Previously most if not all interaction with/about a breed came through the breed clubs but now in the "must have now society" in which we have the interaction is much more readily available over a wider range of people and experiences. I do think the breed club still holds an important place though as it is the go to organisation for official matters relating to the breed. To me my commitment to my breed club is most important. While we have seen new groups pop up as advocates of the breed and although they have FB pages with thousands of likes most of those do not have the breed or in fact any dogs and most do not live in Australia so are not active in any way. Typically many of these people are very vocal about the breed but in many cases have no experience in the breed except for having one or two as pets over the years. Without breed clubs these people although well meaning but uninformed would give out misleading advise about the breed and in time this could be damaging to the breed as a whole.
  2. Another feather in our cap this weekend at Euroa Agi. Society show Spice won Runner Up in Group & Junior in Group
  3. Mine go through a hessian bag about every 3 weeks. At $7.50 per bag that mounts up to a pretty sum over the year. I covered the metal frames with trampoline matting (found on roadside collection day) and it lasted for about 18 months. When that went and I could not get any more I found the Hound House canvas covers. I was told by the representative that these are waxed so make them harder to destroy. The jury is still out on how long these last but they have been there for a few months now and all is well. I also put a piece of marine carpet over the top. The marine carpet I have is excellent for crates and beds and seems to be pretty much indestructable
  4. Perhaps contact the Pomeranian Club in the State the "breeder" is in. Chances are if they are legit they will be known even if not a club member. If they are not then the club may still know about them.
  5. I use the same recipe as Scottsmum. I have my almost 13 year old boy on it - 1 tsp per day and I should remember to take it myself as well. I think it makes a difference to the dog but I know it makes a difference to myself. When I don't take it for a few days the pain in my hands can be excruciating, particularly if I knock my fingers. I usually mix my dose (1 tsp. two or three ties per day) with some yoghurt and add some Ceylon Cinnamon in as well.
  6. OK but the point is some people ARE training their dogs, using a front attach harness, whether you deem it right or wrong, its still ONE method which may work for some. Honestly if the harness is the difference between a dog getting out of the house for a walk to the park a day or not getting out at all and being crammed in a courtyard all the time I feel like the latter has the potential to be much more damaging on more levels. Not every training tool suits every dog, its said here often and it stands just as much. I can understand the concerns, and if they're not for you that's totally fine but there's been some very valid reasons for using them listed here. Is it a valid reason if the harness is causing problems for the dog. Isn't that putting training at any cost above the welfare of the dog? Surly it would be more appropriate to use a method of training that does not harm the dog.
  7. What a day. Freezing cold winds, rain, sun, hail and very long. Spice showed really well at the Melbourne Royal but she stood alone in her class and did not go any further. It was wonderful though to see 4 bitches in the CC line up bred by her breeder. - Yes one of them did win, actually Spice's niece. We then had an Airedale Terrier Club Speciality at the conclusion of Mr Zsolt Lokodi's Royal judging. This did not start until after 4.30pm so it was a long wait. However, I'm not complaining as Spice won Bitch Challenge, Best Opposite Sex in Show and Best Junior in Show and in doing so qualified for the title of Australian Champion. To say I am delighted is an understatement. Her first CC was won at seven and a half months and her last at 12 months and one week. Along the way she has beaten Best in Show winners (All Breeds and Speciality) on several occasions and all of her points have been obtained at either KCC Park, Bulla or as yesterday the showgrounds. Next year should be a lot of fun as she develops and matures. Today we are both having a well deserved rest from grooming but it will be back to work tomorrow.. I think my rising star has definitely risen.
  8. To anyone that is showing their Rising Star at the Melbourne Royal.......Good Luck. We will be there on Tuesday and also have a breed speciality show after the Royal judging. It will be a very tiring day. Not looking forward to getting there and finding parking but once that is done I'm sure it will be most enjoyable. ETA Spice is now a Junior (out of Puppy by just 5 days)
  9. For anyone who may be interested it has been announced that the show will be held outside at KCC Park on Saturday.
  10. Personally I would remove the kibble. You could try the Vet's All Natural Puppy food in place of the kibble and add some sardines to it.
  11. I also use Feather Edge. Very quick turn around and my last lot earlier this year only cost $9.90 each which included postage.
  12. I also have the standard Oztrail compact (2.4x2.4 m) and find it relatively manageable to put up by myself. It is about 18kg I think folded and bagged. Although the bag does have wheels on I find they are on the wrong side of the bag as there is a pouch for the roof and pegs on the same side which means that the pouch sometimes drags on the ground. Overall though it is a decent unit and much lighter that the Deluxe Compact.
  13. Ci sorry you found this with Ann. Ann sat and discussed my girls problem with me for ages and she certainly listened to what I had to say. You never feel as though you are being pushed out the door there. What sort of supplements are you thinking she should be giving you? The Chinese herbs are basically in many cases supplements depending on the condition. I don't know if Sara is still there but maybe you could try her and see if you get n an better with her.
  14. Thanks Aliwake, I'd seen that one as well and have already sent an enquiry to them but as yet not had a reply. It seems even the caravan park are not allowing dogs in their cabin area.
  15. Does anyone know of some accommodation in Euroa (Vic) which allows dogs. I need one night only, preferably cabin or motel. One person and one dog would be great to be able to have the dog inside in a crate/pen but not essential The ones listed on the DoL site in most cases no longer allow pets.
  16. The most important thing at this stage is for your pup to have fun, fun and more fun. Don't worry too much about the stacking, just keep persisting - it will come. Your breeder is far more experienced than you and had also raised your pup from birth. You and the pup are still getting to know each other and you pup will try to win over you. Nothing more sure to turn a pup off showing than making an issue of something at an early age. I have an almost 9 month old and while she stacks well she will not stand for the judge. It's her mission in life to be exuberant in her love of people. To date it has not been detrimental and she has done quite a bit of lovely winning BUT she is getting to an age where it is no longer acceptable for her to behave like this and I need to be a bit more committed to her training in this area. Is there someone else who shows nearby that could help you? Even if not in the same breed.
  17. No problems for me to log in just now. Are you using you membership number (make sure you have the correct number of 0's - mine starts 30000 and I often leave one out). Only other thing I can suggest is that you reset your password.
  18. My male is now 12.5 and has been desexed for about 5 years now. No difference in the smell which is mostly non at all. Every now and again he does seem to miss his target and pee on his front leg instead and that gets a bit smelly but is easy to fix. As for him weeing on everything, that does not happen and never has even when there were entire females in the yard as well. That IMO is training.
  19. With all due respect while I do accept that there is some great advice given on the DoL forums I have to say I have also seen quite a bit of what I consider poor advice. Granted people who are buying their puppies from a pet shop or other less than ideal facility most likely are not given information by the seller, however, I would always prefer a puppy I sold or one of my breed came back to me or to the breed club or other experienced breeder of the breed for advice on the breed. I have seen here people without breed experience give an opinion that directly contradicts that which I as a breeder and owner of the breed for over 40 years would give about my breed. People slate a person/breeder/etc. for selling on Gumtree but in reality DoL is no different to Gumtree or the Trading Post or any other place to advertise. Things are not always what they seem and may be these dogs will turn out to be great family companions for these people who have at least made the effort of going to puppy school for what that is worth. Just a note on one part of my recent experience at puppy school. The session was on grooming your dog. the trainer had apparently been a groomer for many years but told us that combing or brushing your dog deep into to coat was not correct one just flicked the coat. I can only imagine the knots that would be found in an Airedale with this method, let alone a breed with a heavy coat.
  20. Did he mean they were straight in the shoulder? Not sure what the standard says about shoulders but being gundogs I assume they should be well laid back.
  21. Well what fun we have been having. Spice has been to several shows now and apart from still wanting to play with the judge instead of standing nicely to be examined all is going well. I really need to have people she does not know go over her to train her to be more settled for the examination. However having said that she has been awarded Minor Puppy in Group several times and when just 7 months old won 4 contested CC's on the trot. Last Saturday, however, was the biggest buzz when Spice was awarded a 12 pt BOB over much older and experienced dogs. One of these is her older sister, an All Breeds BiS winner and another the BiS winner at the Airedale Terrier Club of Vic's Championship Show last year. Our Club shows (2 Championship shows)are coming up in 2 weeks and we have a great entry by recent standards. I don't expect to be among the points there but hope to be able to keep our success going in the class. We have 2 breed specialists from USA judging so it will be interesting. Photo of Spice taken at 8 months in the MPiS line up.
  22. Find one that has a reasonably heavy frame. I think you will find most of the tops are pretty much the same and the non slip matting seems to be universal. My table does not have a brand but I bought it about 20 years ago and it is still as good as the day it was bought, except for the trimming around the top shrinking a bit. It is fairly heavy about 18 kg I think.
  23. Oh if it was only that easy we would just be able to pluck a breed off the shelf and mate them and make or remake the required breed. Not to mention that many of the breeds originally used to produce the now vulnerable breeds are themselves now extinct.
  24. I must have flued it as well. For over 40 years I have had entire bitches and at times an entire male as well. A decent run and dogs crated inside has been how I have managed the times the bitches are in season. I have never had pyo or any other reproductive issues and I only have 4 foot wire fences surrounding the property.
  25. I have to say I've been very spoilt. Spice is now 8 months old but she has never - not once messed inside. I guess that makes it easier but our toilet routine from when she came a 8 weeks was to take her out every 30-45 minutes and wait until she toileted, praise her and back inside. We don't have a doggy door so it was a matter of us taking her out not letting her go by herself. I will also say she is not inside all day so has plenty of opportunity to toilet by herself while out. I wonder by letting Brandy go through the routine which seems to go on for a while and then you get up to take her out whether you have inadvertently taught her to wait for you to take her out to toilet.
