  1. I would say a possible reaction to the vaccination. Is this her 3rd vaccination? IMO an overload in a short time.
  2. Hey Rebanne, you need to stop feeding jumping beans!!!!. I have a feeling this is what Spice is going to be like in the ring. Either that or she will plant 4 feet firmly on the ground and pretend she cannot walk. Oh well at least we can laugh at ourselves.
  3. This is my Rising Star 2105. Tjuringa Spice Is Nice aka Spice. The first time in the show ring for over 6 years for me and the first one I've not bred myself for over 12 years. This is the third litter of the same mating, (I bred her father) and from the previous litter there is a multiple BIS winner and from the first one a multiple Group winner. I'm hoping that Spice and I can continue the success. First show is on Saturday. Spice is almost 5 months
  4. I don't have a problem with this but I'd not do it myself. As far as I'm concerned puppies at 8 weeks will be pretty much covered by their mother's immunity and with having the first vaccination as well I think the risk is pretty slim. Not impossible but slim. You know when I started in dogs we took the puppies home at 6 weeks or even 5.5 week. Often litters were vaccinated in the morning and went to new homes later that day or the next day and they were taken out and about right away. They survived and in my experience most thrived. I really don't see the difference between going to a show or a breed club event as being any safer. Do you really know for a fact that the dogs there all have their vaccinations up to date. You can assume but I bet that assumption is wrong. Just because one person thinks something should be done one way does not mean it is the right way for everyone (or is some cases for them even)
  5. I agree with the others re a fear period and also with Haredown Whippets in saying that your dog does not need to have a positive association with all other dogs. Neutering him is most unlikely to stop this issue and IMO is never a solution to any behavioural problems. Many people think it is the answer to any negative situation but in reality it has very little if any impact on those situations. Training is what will impact on your problem.
  6. I'm quite happy with Boronia Veterinary Clinic. Have been going there for 40+ years and although they have got bigger I don't think their costs are too bad. They also have a 24 hour emergency (for clients) service. I have just left my 12.5 year old there after a drama this afternoon. Hopefully he will be able to be collected tomorrow all being well. Cost for x-rays, anaesthetic, supervised overnight hospitalisation, medication and consultation is estimated to be about $550.
  7. Preparation is under way for our first show in 2 weeks .
  8. Dogs Victoria did a lot of work some years ago to establish a good relationship with the DPI and become accepted as an Applicable Organisation. This is one of the areas it has paid off for it's members.
  9. The following is taken from http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/pets/registration-legislation-and-permits/dog-and-cat-registration/dog-and-cat-registration-fees Dog and cat registration fees Note: registration fees vary by municipality - contact your local council to confirm pet registration fees for your area. A new fee schedule for pet registration (under the Domestic Animals Act 1994) was introduced on 11 April 2013: Members of the community with unregistered dogs and cats can no longer attract a reduced registration fee for microchipping alone; This change does not affect pets registered prior to 11 April 2013. Why has the reduced fee for microchipped animal registration been removed? Microchipping has been compulsory for new registrations for over five years, it is now time to focus on the up-take of other forms of responsible pet ownership. Owners of desexed cats or dogs already qualify for a reduced registration fee. Since the introduction of mandatory microchipping for new registrations, there has been a reduction in desexing. How can new pet registrations qualify for the reduced fee? An owner registering a dog or cat for the first time with their council will not be entitled to the reduced fee for microchipping their pet. However, there are other criteria for receiving a reduced fee on new registrations. If your animal meets one or more of the following you will be eligible for a reduced fee. If the animal is: desexed, over 10 years of age, or part of a domestic animal business or applicable organisation, or a dogs that has undergone training, or a working dog. Applicable organisations are: Australian National Cats Inc. Cats Victoria Inc Dogs Victoria Feline Control Council (Victoria) Inc. Greyhound Racing Victoria, and The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy Australia and Victoria Inc. How does this affect owners who already get a reduced fee due to microchipping? It will not affect people if they stay within the same local council area and continue to renew the registration on an animal. The removal of the reduced fee for microchipped animals registration is only effective for registrations occurring on or after 11 April 2013. Anyone who receives a reduced fee for other criteria (e.g. the animal is desexed or over 10 years of age, see above) will continue to receive this discount. What if my animal has been previously registered but I move to a different council area? If you move to a different council area your registration will be regarded by that council as new. This means the reduced fee for microchipped animals will not continue. However, if your animal is desexed or meets other criteria, outlined above, the reduced fee will [still] apply. My Council also has mandatory desexing , will this mean that new registrations cannot receive the reduced fee? No. Desexing, whether mandatory or not, entitles the owner to a reduced registration fee.
  10. I'm another one in FTG, but probably not going to Bulla on Monday.
  11. LOL, I doubt if there will be any stats on that, however, I do know that in my breed you do see a huge variation in the tail length - albeit not as short as a traditionally docked tail. There were quite a few puppies that I did not dock or only took a very little off, when we were allowed to, because the tail was quite a bit shorter than the norm. The undocked Dobes I have seen have a very long thin tail so there would not be any genetic reason apart from a "fortuitous" mutation in a LabxDobe. I think someone is probably telling porky pies!!!!
  12. This is the issue, many Councils, it seems are not giving the reduced fee to ratepayers and simply saying they don't do it. As I read the act there is no option for Councils to refuse. I know one of the councillors for Manningham and she argued black and blue with me that it was up to the individual Council and "she knew the rules".... Amazingly she could not get to the Council quick enough to demand her reduced rate when the Act was produced. I do wonder if that Council have since advised the ratepayers or not!
  13. There are many problems with declaring a dog has HD. Out of a score of 53:53 what do you consider HD affected. Strictly speaking my dog with a score of 1:2 has HD as does a dog of significantly worse scores. IMO there are flaws with the whole system. Some of which are - different readers/scorers = different results. We know this because the same x-rays have been sent to different scorers and come back with quite different scores. Environmental factors - we know that young dogs that are over exercised, jump, kept on slippery surfaces and so on are more likely to be effected. Again, IMO if x-rays are done it should be mandatory to score them as is with PennHip. A local Vet looking at the x-rays and declaring HD may well be accurate, particularly in obvious cases BUT it does nothing to help determine what is an accurate breed average. I would like to see mandatory scoring and a registry of those scores for every breed. I know of dogs whose sire and dam had scores of 0:0 and litter mates of each had very low scores for the breed but some of the progeny (in pet homes) had less than satisfactory scores. Environmental factors? We have been x-raying for HD for over 30 years and yet in many breeds there has not really been any drastic reduction in the prevalence of the condition. In some cases this may be because breeders ignore those scores when they are less than satisfactory and continue to breed from them but I don't think that is the case in the majority of cases - at least in my breed. What does a breed average really mean? In Australia the breed average for Airedales is just under 13, so I'm told but in the UK it is closer to 17. Does that mean a good dog in UK should not be bred from in Australia? Years ago one of my Vets and I were discussing the HD situation and his comment to me was that as a breeding criteria he would put HD as 4th on the list. 1st was temperament, 2nd heart and I've forgotten what the third one was. I've not done the poll because I don't have a dog that suffers from HD.
  14. Change of the colour of street signs by different Councils rates high for me. But at least that doesn't involve throwing out reams of stationary and other printed material.
  15. Thanks TSD that I what I was looking for. I've bookmarked it now for future reference. Excellent! I know how to find that stuff in my sleep because they keep changing the department name and the website! You're right, TSD, about Govt. Departments changing names. I worked for the Dept. of Education (or whatever it is now) in just under 20 years there were no less than 7 name changes. Is there any bigger waste of $'s?
  16. Thanks TSD that I what I was looking for. I've bookmarked it now for future reference.
  17. Hi All, Can anyone please point me in the direction of the Act that states that animals owned by an "approved authority" - i.e. Dogs Vic are eligible for reduced registration costs. I had this information last year but for the life of me I cannot remember where I found it. Of course I did not bookmark it anywhere.
  18. A good result for those concerned. I just wish they did not have CCR in their name as they really are more spaniel like than retriever like IMO.
  19. I've bitten the bullet and ordered an OKS trolley. They seem to get good reviews from everyone who has them so I'm looking forward to joining the people with them. Thanks to everyone for their input.
  20. I buy it from an Asian (or Indian) grocer - 1kg cost me $6.10. I would imagine turmeric from the health store would be fine but probably more expensive. Coconut oil can be added as well after the paste has thickened - about 35g/ml (if melted) for the above amounts. Turmeric may be fed just as the powder but making the paste apparently allows the body to utilise it better and it also removes some of the bitterness it has. Can be mixed with food, yoghurt, milk (add a spoonful of honey) or taken as is. I don't mind the taste but don't like the texture.
  21. Add turmeric to his food. 1/4 cup of turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup filtered (or bottled) water Mix all ingredients in a small saucepan and stir over a medium heat until the mix thickens to a paste - about the consistency of tomato paste Cool mix and store in a glass jar in the fridge. Start by adding about 1/4 teaspoon of past 3 or 4 times per day to food or as is if the dog will take it. Gradually build up to 1 tsp 3 or 4 times per day. I've been taking this myself and the improvement in my arthritis is amazing. I've gone from constant pain to virtually none and I only take 1 tsp per day. There is a Turmeric Users Group on Facebook if you want more information.
  22. Your decision, your business. I get really sick of people pushing the desexing thing. Took my 5 month old puppy to the Vet for her vaccination recently and the Vet nurse asked me when she was booked in for desexing. I told her I was not having her desexed which was met with "Why not" Basically I told her it was my dog I would make the decisions.
  23. I've heard several people saying they have had problems with trolleys fro Habonero Hounds so I'll take your advise on that.
  24. I wonder just how nutritional this would be. Firstly using chicken that is so young there is little nutrition of value in it and then cooking the little there is out of it. Still if it works for you go for it, it's not going to do any harm guess..
  25. Who is to know where the litter is whelped and raised?
