  1. I agree with others about soft crates. I'm not a fan of the airline types either, I much prefer wire crates as I think they get much better airflow. Having said that, apart from using an airline type for my pups until they are about 4 months I have no real experience with them. As for crate training, thinking back I've never done that either. The dogs are put in the crate as need be and initially I might feed them there or give them a toy etc. but it is a fairly quick process for them to accept the crate. I've never "played crate training" games or taken weeks to introduce them to the crate. They never go in the car without being in a crate.
  2. I have a new pup, now almost 10 weeks old and a resident 12 year old. I do not allow either the pup or the adult to stand over the other. the pup sometimes tries it when the older is lying down. I do think the behaviour you have described is bullying and I would separate the pup and the dog displaying the behaviour. My adult is very tolerant of the puppy, much more so than I expected but he walks away from the pup if she is harassing him and on the rare occasion that he has been a bit heavy handed with the pup I remove her from the situation. Each must learn to respect the other. In your case I would separate the dog and the pup for a good part of the time and give plenty of one on one to each at different times and only have the together if you are able to control the behaviour.
  3. In Victoria all pups are to be registered and I believe that is now the case in all States but stand to be corrected on that. However, again in Victoria, although the litter should be registered before they are 3 months old, an additional cost is incurred if not, but registration can be done anytime up to 18 months after which time registration will be refused. Not sure why anyone genuine would want to wait that long, but I do have my suspicions. In the case you are referring to is it a case of the breeder intending to register the pups but has not yet done so or are they intending to not register them at all?
  4. Thought I would start an Airedale Terrier photo thread in the Breed Sub Forums but it will not let me start new thread. Anyone know why or what I need to do to do so please?
  5. I know exactly how you feel Rascalmyshadow. We are in the same position. My new baby girl arrived last week and it is the first baby puppy in the house for about 9 years and the first not born here for about 20. It's quite a learning curve to remember/learn about puppies again. Can I ask where you decided to go to puppy school? Hugo looks as though he will steal your hearts very quickly.
  6. There is also a Puppy Class at East west Vet in Bentleigh. Cannot give any details of it but if it is anything like the other services provided by this clinic it may be worth looking at.
  7. Great photos Roova, I hope Poppy will bring you many happy hours of fun. I'm sure Maggie will enjoy her before too long as well but a new puppy can be very irritating for the incumbent dog. Just looking at what Gus my 12 year old puts up with from Spice I can see a few lessons coming her way.
  8. Off topic here but if a puppy is desexed at 8 weeks is a tattoo put in it's ear as is routine with an older dog?
  9. I was quoted a minimum of $500 by 2 Vets.
  10. So, today was the day I had Gus' teeth cleaned without a GA. Brian from Fresh Breath Cat & Dog Teeth Cleaning came and on arrival spent 15 minutes or so chatting while basically ignoring Gus after this time he interacted with Gus who was quite relaxed in his own environment. Gus is a bit of a stress head in as much as while he is comfortable with what he knows he is not always so in new situations. Within a very short time he and Brian were happy together. Time to start the process. Firstly let me say NO SEDATION was used. Gus was wrapped in a sheet and put on his usual inside mat on his side. Brian simply talked calmly to him and stroked him in order for Gus to relax at which stage he slowly started scaling the teeth. When Gus became restless Brian stopped for a while to allow Gus to relax again and then proceeded. After about 30 minutes one side was finished and Gus was let up for a break. Brain and I had a cuppa and 10 minutes later did the sheet wrapping again and were ready to do the second half of Gus's teeth. At one point Gus was so relaxed he went to sleep!!!!! Yes, my stress head boy actually went to sleep while a strange person scraped away at his teeth. The whole process took about an hour and a half and Gus now has lovely clean teeth, fresh breath and no after effect of a GA. I would totally recommend this method and for those dogs that for medical reasons cannot have GA's it would be wonderful. It is still not cheap but a lot cheaper than I have been quoted and IMO just as good a job was done. Gus' teeth before - not too bad for a 12 year old. Stage 1 - Wrapping A relaxed Gus - no restraint and he is quite calm Brian working on Gus Finished, nice white, clean teeth ETA: As I see it the possible downside to this procedure would be if there was any further dental work required. Brian does not do extractions and so if that was necessary Veterinary intervention and GA would be necessary.
  11. Well, our first night went well. Spice has been busy exploring today and shadowing her new big brother Gus. Hopefully she will settle well again tonight.
  12. Well Day one was a good one. Spice is quite settled and so far doing all of the things one would expect. Not much complaining about anything but I've been around long enough to know that tomorrow is another day and it will take her a few days to really settle. She is full of herself, a good trait for the show ring where I hope she will do her breeder and the breed proud, but at the same time quite prepared to relax.. Perhaps they go hand in hand. Here she is with her new mate Gus who is 12 and to date has pretty much ignored her other than to sniff her all over and try and clean up her food bowls. ETA For some reason the photo has turned itself around, any tips on how to fix that?
  13. Look what came to my place today. She, Spice, and my 12 year old boy Gus have met and greeted each other quite happily and now basically ignoring each other. It is a long time since I had an 8 week old puppy and even longer since I had one that was not born here. Interesting days ahead I think. ETA: Thank you to Bertie for explaining to me how to add photos.
  14. She picks out the meat etc. and leaves the dry because the meat etc. is what dogs would eat naturally, the dry is what dog owners have made dogs adapt to.
  15. My holistic Vet used laser treatment in conjunction with acupuncture to aid the blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
  16. Personally, I'd forget about the dry food and just feed her raw mince/small chunks of meat, chicken wings and necks. I also make up a mix of mince, minced veggies, eggs, cottage cheese and yoghurt to feed as one meal a day. I also feed Vet's All Natural a couple of times a week mixed with raw meat.

  18. Yes another Airedale. It is the first puppy I've had in 9 years and the first 8 week old I've had that I've not bred for over 20 years. Could be interesting.
  19. Just bought one from Masters @ $87.30 with the promo code Mercedes posted (thank you Mercedes) I wanted to look at the product and get the feel of it before I bought so went to Masters and did that. It seems very light and comfortable. Looking forward to trying it out. My new puppy arrives on Saturday so she might be introduced to the Dremel before too long.
  20. The Heiniger Saphir Cordless are brilliant. I love mine. They are easy and comfortable to hold, don't get hot and are reasonably quiet - at least compared to my old Osters. It takes me only about 2/3 of the time to clip my dogs as it did with the old clippers because they cut properly. More expensive than other brands but IMO worth it.
  21. If they are doing it at your home they would be hard pressed to stop you from watching.
  22. I agree there is little information on the website. They are located at Dandenong (it is on their FB page) but they are a mobile service so will come to your home. I'm tempted to try them.
