Ok thanks for the tips on the stops. We might see how we go and if the dogs gets restless then perhaps we can stop for them. I have colleague saying to give them travelling pills. Not sure what or where to get it.

thanks @persephone if I routinely gave them the all round wormer such as Sentinel - every 3 months, I suppose, they are clear of heart worm? Edit: I mean I do routinely deworm them 3 months once

Hi all, We are relocating to Sydney for 2 years, from Melbourne. Having two shih tzu with me and thinking what should I be prepared with other than the ticks. We will be driving all the way with them and would stop every 2 hours for break. I am worried about the insects, fleas, ticks that they are going to pick up whilst the travel. Also being in NSW, I understand now is peak tick season. I was searching through the forum for the preventative measure on ticks for both my long haired little beings. I came across Rose Geranium, Scalibar (not sure spelling) collar, Advantix, Frontline Spray and so on. Pity them, need to put through all those medication. I also understand heart worm prevention is important in NSW, not too red alert in the area I am living in VIC. I guess I would like to know what I should do with them before travelling and also living in Sydney area. I have not selected the suburb to stay in but most probably either inner west or Chatswood and it's surrounding. I might also need to get some good vet list. I did do a search in the forum but almost all threads seems to be 2009 or earlier.... Any ideas / recommendation would be great appreciated. Thank you

I'm so lost as in to go through the Pred or biopsy straight. Reason I chose the Pred for another week because I see it healing. Just not completely heal since 2 weeks ago.
-
..that you are not paying for treatment! The vets don't sound fantastically competent ..... :/ Vet didn't charged for consultation fees but just the medications. He did mentioned at first he is unsure if it was the induced vomit episode or it's EG. but after the latest visit he is leaning towards EG because of the symptoms and from the look of it. To treat the EG or ulcer , cortisone actually does help to stop inflammation and suppress the immune system to coz the body to react further.

I'm seeing the ulcer healing.... I checked daily. I can see from her getting two swelling and redness to now left one small swell and very light redness.. So I can conclude her ulcer did goes down after the Pred....aid by cavulox antibiotics too. Now she is on Pred only. I'm hoping she will get better soon. Just left that one stubborn swell not yet recovered.

updates: we went to vet for follow up yesterday. Vet is quite sure it could be Eosinophilic Granuloma as the ulcer is healing with the prednisolone medication. But after the course of 2 weeks, vet said that the ulcer / EG is not 100% cured which makes him concern about it. We've discussed about the option of having the biopsy to confirmed if it is in fact Eosinophilic Granuloma or if it's something else. And I feel that under the prednisolone 5 mg medication, I can see the improvement ... although not completely cure yet. So I have asked for another 1 week of the prednisolone medication to see if it will improve further and vet is happy to give it a try. Vet did said that it is not such good idea for a puppy that is still growing to give prednisolone for long term but he is happy to try another week to see if it does improve further before going for biopsy. I just wonder if I should just proceed with the biopsy or try for the 1 week first? The reason I've chose the medication for another week is because I can see the improvement and a bit reluctant to put her through the anaesthetic again (she was desexed 3 months ago). Vet recommends the biopsy (after the 2 week's course) because he wants to know what it is in order to better help us with it. Sometimes it's hard to make decision. any input is greatly appreciated.

updates: my girl is getting so much better... She is eating back her kibbles after the second day of prednisone & antibiotic medication. Today will be visiting vet for follow up. I guess, it's really trauma from inducing vomit and later the bad ulcer.... slowly becoming like Eosinophilic Granuloma... will see how we go with the vet, maybe will be continuing with the meds till she is finally out of the ulcer. whew!

Just thinking of sharing this Tick Alert Map from Mosman Vet Tick website. I am not sure if this is an overall database from somewhere or just from the vet clinic itself. It's pretty handy. You can see how many tick paralysis that were pick up by cats & dogs. Initially I wanted to try out Pyrmont and Surry Hill, hopefully it's not too high chance of tick paralysis cases.
-
thanks for the info. I saw in the news there were few alerts that stated ticks alert even during the early Spring because of not so cold winter this year. And the tick paralysis is pretty bad too.
-
that means, places as far as Chatswood would be less prone to ticks? as it is more than 10km away from the shore.....
-
what about areas in the Sydney CBD itself? Places ly Pyrmont, Surry Hills, Darlinghust.... etc?
-
Thanks so much. I might look at upper north shore are

My little girl gone through the eating poo and playing poo bits when she was young. I find maybe puppy so young is not able to fully process the food hence the poo may smell of food. I initially given her Optimum as breeder uses it. But I changed it canidae brand later on. I used two type to mix it together, All stage & pure sea. Her poo smells very fishy after that and she is not interested after sniffing it. I give her pumpkins too. It suppose to create pungy poo that dogs don't like. But I find they will grow out of it. They are very playful at that stage and will play on anything. As for stepping on poo...this takes a longer time ............

oh thanks for the info. Do you see any ticks on them? I mean one or two or a lot... ?

Hi, this might be a silly question and I did try to search through the forum. Didn't quite get enough information, but here goes... Can anyone enlighten me if living around Sydney CBD, maybe North Sydney, Neutral Bay, Crow Nest, Waverton.... is highly tick prone area? Is there a higher chance of tick paralysis? I know and understand ticks are everywhere, but want to know if the surrounding areas of the CBD or North Sydney are extremely prone to ticks throughout the year, especially Spring / Summer.

just thought to update about my pup. I've gone for another visit as I feel the swell is not going down and other areas are swelling too. Not dramatic but in the course of 5-7 days, just a little swell is noticed. vet did recommend biopsy however I have decided to opt for another option before going through that as last resort. Looking at the way the swell goes, at first it does looks like just ulceration, but the redness has tamed down a wee bit and the swell has come up a little bit more. So vet thinks it could be "Eosinophilic Granuloma". And only biopsy can confirmed what is happening in there. For me, I got a feeling could be trauma from hunger vomit or induced vomiting 2 weeks ago, as the areas started to have this really inflamed marking before all this swelling. So now, we are on prednisone and also the initial antibiotics for another 5 days, then follow up visit after. Hopefully by then there is some good result else will probably go for biopsy. Poor girl. photo ulcer

Hi Erny, thanks for the tips. She is small. 7 months still. So I have only give her a tiny dollop but multiple times throughout the day. That might total up to max of 2 teaspoon the most. I am still giving... Yes I plan to contact the vet to ask about it but he is only available on Tues, Wed and Fri. We've seen him only last Tues. Will update this thread later on. The swell doesn't seem to swell more, I hope. It's hard to get a good view with her moving around and also, checking it so many times a day, daily can be quite confusing... Hopefully she will be well by end of the week.

oh thank you for the info!

not entirely recover or it getting worst I think.. Vet did said that if it got worst to go back to him. It hasn't gone any redder but the size of the swell seems a little bit bigger than few days ago. I might be wrong because sometimes looking at it daily confused me .. the vet gave a 2 weeks antibiotic course and ask me to go back for a follow up visit... then plan for the next course of action

at the moment mypetwarehouse is having buy one free 1 for the Earthborn 2.5kg. I've bought the Earthborn Holistic Primitive for both of my fur kids and I find their poo turn so soft . I decided to do the transitioning from Canidae to Earthborn due to new packaging of Canidae. The new package of Canidae has been packaged much lesser in weight but with same price. Too steep. If their poo hasn't firm up after the transitioning I might revert back to Canidae. Let me know how everyone goes with Earthborn.

Hi Erny , when you said give them 2-3 course of Manuka, how much would you give at a time? A tea spoon?

Thanks so much for the food tips! No they did not tell me about using the oral med. if I've known I would have assist them so they can use the eye drop instead. She will let me as I know how. I've been quite frustrated just thinking about it after the visit to vet for the ulcer. In fact I was correcting him that the other vet used the eye drop and he told me in their system they used the oral. Also went to check with the other vet just to confirmed. So that caught me as surprised as that vet didn't tell me about the change of course. Hopefully my little girl will get better. Although not as red but it somehow looks a bit more swollen the it was. What should I do if it has pus? Back to the vet?
