  1. how cool is that. I don't even have a dam would love one but really would need a bigger place
  2. What are the risks of not de sexing a dog when only one testicle has descended? Murphy is now 5 1/2 months and we're not sure if we're going to get him de-sexed at 6 months or wait a bit longer for him to mature a bit. It appears that only one of his testicles has come down & I have been told that if their not both down by the time they are 6 months they wont come down. The other issue that I have is our next door neighbour has an entire bitch, he doesn't lock her up when she is in season & doesn't plan on getting her fixed. I'm concerned that they will get to each other
  3. People really give me the shits Those dogs could have had happy lives if only their people had of put the time in for them.
  4. From what I was told when I started researching the Brittany, was that the French lines are more the hunting lines & the American lines are more suitable for pet/show homes. Call a few of the breeders and talk to them (that's what I did) Our boy is from American lines. They really are super smart & just love everyone. You can hunt with them one day & then take them to a show the next. There are some fantastic breeders in Australia that I have spoken to, really helpful and been with the breed for years and years. Even though I didn't purchase my dog through their kennels they are happy to offer support and ideas - Most of the breeders know each other & who has puppies too. Depending on the time you may have to wait for a pup as most have long waiting lists before the litter is even born.
  5. I wonder if you could contact the owners & see if they were willing to surrender him? That is if you were willing to /or knew some one that was willing to take him on.
  6. I was in the same position as you last year & we decided on a Brittany, I knew nothing about them before November last year & now am totally in love. The other one at the top of our list was the Lagotto.
  7. I have had that a few times with Murphy. Our old dog was 13 & fantastic - she had to be PTS last year & I could not bear the house without a dog. I did heaps of research on what breed of dog would be the best for our family, took ages to actually get a pup (lots of waiting lists) we were all so excited about him coming home. After a few weeks of getting here he started jumping all over the kids, stealing their toys and just being a typical puppy. I really wondered if I'd done the wrong thing getting a puppy with 3 young kids. Often my kids will say that they miss our old dog because we could all "just be" around her (if that makes sense) but we love him to bits & I know we did the right thing and eventually he will be our old dog that we can "just be" around.
  8. he is just far too cute for words, enjoy
  9. Murphy used to only hump the teddy that he came from the breeder with. He killed it so now he hump his sheep skin, but only if he drags it out of his crate.
  10. I used to feed Murphy every meal in his crate, if I wanted him in there when we had dinner/needed to get the kids ready for bed - where ever I'd put him in there with a chewy treat. I have a treat jar that is only for when it's time to go into his crate (dog chocs) I have other treats for other things. Murphy LOVES his crate so much we have trouble getting him up in the mornings
  11. how scary for you & poor Toby. I just hope that the people learn from this & do something about it
  12. huski TheLBD exact reason I wished I'd never used it with my old girl. That happened to me more times that I would have ever imagined - we just must be very agreeable people hehehehe I do like "Go" I might give that a try & see how it goes (no pun intended) I'd like to eventually have him only releasing to me (or hubby) saying it, but he is trying so hard to keep it all together - imagine a champagne bottle being shaken & the cork NOT popping out - that's my boy LOL He's just so funny & bouncy, I just love his exuberance - although everyone keeps telling me it's craziness - meh what ever it is, I love him for it.
  13. My last dog I used "okay" silly really because of the amount of times I say okay without really wanting to release her. I'd been using it for awhile before it was pointed out not to be the best work to use. Murphy I started using "Free" problem I'm finding is that almost everyone else in our class is using that word - so he hears is & is off (any excuse for him really  So now I'm wanting to use another word, but want one that slips off the tongue easily & that not that many people have. After watching Crate Games DVD last night I like "Break" but it doesn't seem to roll off that easily for me. Love some suggestions please
  14. I love the Prestige Pets lead. I love their collars too (just waiting for Murphy to fit into one so that I can get him one) I used them for my last dog - for 13 years and had something very similar for the dog I had before that. Lovely padding on the inside of the handle & they come in varying lengths to suit everyone. sorry tried to link the page but don't know how. Google Prestige pets padded leashed nylon One thing I found with leather (from horse riding) is that when the leather gets wet it gets a bit slippery - not sure if the leads are the same.
  15. yes it's the self/impulse control that I really want to work on, as well as the recalls and looking more to me. He loves his crate already, I just though it would be a fun way of training. He seems to be the dog that you give an inch & he takes a mile - but he's only just gone 5 months old
  16. My copy of crate games arrived tonight I'm really looking forward to starting it. But have a few questions that are probably really silly but here goes. Murphy sleeps in his crate at night and hubby lets him out to go the toilet in the morning, around 5.30, lets him play or he puts himself back to bed when he comes back in. Sometimes Murphy is really reluctant to get up (despite having a massive wee & poo once he goes out) so hubby normally bribes him. How is this going to work once I have started the crate games? Should hubby not open the door until he is sitting when letting him out in the morning? I was going to suggest that he uses the same release word. I do have another crate that I have for the car that I can do the games in, until we really have the hang of it, if that will help. Also the crate that he sleeps in we have across ways, rather than long ways. I was planning on doing the games with the crate long ways, but will it be confusing with the one that he sleeps in to be going across?? Sorry if they are really silly questions, for some reason they are really confusing me and I'm worried that I might muck it all up with having different things going on. Thanks in advance
  17. watching this thread with interest.
  18. google the clubs information & email the regulations to the club president. Explain that you would like all of the member to be made fully aware of the rights of others. You pay your rates, you're not doing anything wrong.
  19. how nasty of them. Is there anyway that you can move to a place without flat mates? I would suggest that you get help with her, I had a Rotty many many years ago & found that the normal dog obedience training for her was just not enough and ended up getting in a trainer that breed & trained Rottys. Best thing I EVER did (for me & her) went from being out of control, to so well behaved in a really short time. She was my first dog (grew up with the families dogs) and taught me so much.
  20. Awesome thanks, it's been such a long time since I have done any training & he's such a goof ball. Might see about something for when I've got the kids with me.
  21. I would much rather have him reliable in loose leash walking with a flat collar to be honest, I've been stopping & walking back when he pulls, sometimes works other times it doesn't. I used to just stop, but he would never come back to me & we'd get nowhere
  22. I have a 5 month old Brittany and we are working on walking nicely on a loose lead & some heel work, not always great at it, but yanno. I want to eventually do trials & agility when he is older. I would like to take him more places to get him used to everything, but have 3 kids with me(one is at school)he pulls like a steam train when I take him to school pick up and I can't hold my 2 year old when he's doing this. (we have to cross one road so need to be able to hold her hand) If I was to use a halti lead or sporn harness (or something similar) when I have him out with my kids, do you think he will learn to reply on this & not be reliable in the heel work later on using a collar? He's a very excitable & exuberant boy
  23. Oh he is adorable smashtank. I used to keep Murphy on a lead to toilet - but I was taking him outside every time - down the the furthest part of the yard. At first I would just carry him there, because we have back steps & he was worried about going down them. Hope you get a good nights sleep. Nacho is a little sweetie, sounds like he's a quick learner. I'm leaning towards de-sexing sooner rather than later, I think he's done a fair whack of his growing, just the filling out & getting a little bit taller (maybe) I can't find any research about all of the benefits of leaving them entire until they are fully grown (height & weight) Had dog school today, Murph was a total goof ball even the instructor was laughing at him. Good job he's so cute
