    Dew Claws

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think we will certainly get them removed when we get him desexed. Which will be when the breeder suggested (around 9 months). I contacted his breeder to ask his advice as well, and he was very surprised to hear that he had them, even more surprised cause he and his vet missed them. So he has asked if he can come and visit Tyrion next week. He said its unusual for corgi's to have them so he's interested in coming to see him.
  2. Rear dew claws aren't common in some breeds Wow! Can honestly say I've just learnt something new :) I thought all dogs had them. My friend has a Pyrenean Mountain Dog and they even have DOUBLE rear due claws! She shows him, so can't have them removed. She hates them, and I must admit they do look a bit strange. So glad my boys have none. I've never had a dog with them. Not sure how he missed them, or his vet for that matter.
  3. I just got a phone call from Tyrion's breeder! They were responding to my email regarding dew claws. They can't believe he has them, they said that they've never had a dog with them before so they're very surprised that he has got them. As a result they want to come visit him next week lol
  4. lol literally just e-mailed them. They usually get back relatively quickly :) so should have a response in the next 24 hrs. I really think I need to bath Tyrion when he wakes. I think he rolled in something funky at my parents house.
  5. This in my opinion is bull crap. Plenty of threads on it as well. My last dog was desexed at 6 months and didn't start those behaviours until 3 months later, you just train them not to do it. Take your breeders advice and do it 9months + This was my thought too, was that I would still plan on desexing at 9 months. I've read too much information suggesting getting it done before maturity does damage hormonally etc.
  6. She mentioned that they can be quite a problem. Get hurt easily, split, tear etc. so its best to just remove them while he is being desexed. I've never had a dog with rear dew claws either. Just opened a thread on the topic to get everyone elses opinions. I have a few months before I plan on getting him desexed to make up our minds. :)

    Dew Claws

So after visiting with our vet today she suggested that we have Tyrions rear dew claws removed because they get damaged easily. Is this necessary? pro's and con's to getting it done?
  8. I think she said only remove the rear ones, not the front ones.
  9. why? She said they can cause problems. I asked about this in the corgi thread and in my undescended testicle thread. I wasn't sure if this was normal procedure or not. :\ Edit; currently reading this thread. www.dolforums.com.au/topic/29731-dew-claw-removal/
  10. Tyrion had his 12 week vaccinations today! And a check up, silly bugger howled and hollered when the vet tried to take his temperature, so she gave him a small bit of food to nom on while she did it and then he didn't make a peep. typical Corgi! Apparently he has one undescended testicle, which will just mean if its still that way come snip time that his desexing operation will cost a bit more. She also suggested that we have his dew claws removed.
  11. I took my 12 week old pup to the vet today for a check up and to get his 12 week vacs. All went well, except for one testicle has descended and the other hasn't. THe vet asked if we were planning on desexing which we are - and we said that the breeder told us 9 months once he has matured would be the way to go. The vet mentioned that there were benefits to getting it done earlier (prevents certain behaviours, humping, marking territory), but definitely not before four months. She said that it is likely the other one would descend on its own. Was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and what the likely hood of the other descending as she said?
  12. he is just lovely Daisy.Tea! WE're off to the vet today to get Tyrion is 12w vacs and for a general check up :)
  13. Tyrion (also 12 weeks today) has also lost his puppy fat and is looking leaner and much more corgi like in the body lol. Yes, photos of Envy please!
  14. part of the problem could be he cant hold it when he has to go so has no choice but to go in his crate. Once tyrion learnt more bladder control he hasn't had an accident. I use vinegar too great stuff :)
  15. One of the potential problems with getting two puppies at the same time is rivalry between the two (especially if they're male litter mates), and the other issue that they'll bond with each other and not you. Most breeders I've come across certainly won't sell two puppies to one person at the same time. Its often better to space them out by one or two years.
  16. What are you cleaning up his accidents with? 4 sounds pretty good, he'll eventually get the connection that outside means wees/poos
  17. About 5-10 minutes after Tyrion has eaten I take him outside on the leash to poo / wee. We don't go back inside Until he has gone. It doesn't take very long for food to move from mouth to bowels with puppies often only 5mins - 30 mins. For the first 4 weeks of Tyrion being home I'd take him out after a play, after eating and after waking, and before crating, at night I set my alarm every 2 hours to take him out to relieve himself. Yesterday, he started standing at the front door whenever he needs to go loo. It takes a while but you'll get there!
  18. Koda is just gorgeous! <3 Will post some more pics of Tyrion a bit later. He will have a vet visit this week for his 12 week vacs.
  19. Oh cool. I know Wagga, my husbands aunty lives there. :) Great about Nova! He is divine. :) Tyrion gets his 12w vax nxt week
  20. He is just gorgeous Lisa! Just noticed your in the riverina area? That is albury way yea? We head up that way every so often as my in-laws are in Gerogery. A quick update on Tyrion; toileting is going really well, no crate accidents at night now! And he can do a 5 hour block of sleep before I take him outside to relieve himself. My kids adore him to bits, but don't smother him either which is awesome :). And he is doing well at puppy school. How is everyone elses training etc coming along?
