  1. Thanks. I think maybe i'm making it too formal for him. Will try incoperating it with lots of playing. :)
  2. Ok, so i'm having some trouble training Tyrion. He use to sit, drop, stand, on command and we were working on stay. He comes when he is called, and he sits usually when I ask him. However, if I try and even start a 5 minute training session with him he tries to go back to his crate, OR he turns his back on me and sits down. At puppy school I was told that if he did this to walk him around in a circle and try again. But he will literally just sit there and not move his stubborn little butt and I don't want to DRAG him around. I've tried missing a meal so he is extra hungry, I've tried a variety of different treats including roast chicken which he usually tears my hand off for, but if I give him a command with it he completely ignores me. I've been doing the NILIF as a daily thing, but what can I do to make him more trainable. Is it his age? (15 weeks today) he is really being a complete stubborn little butthead and its driving me nuts!
  3. Yes! I get, "Oh that dog has some german shepherd in it" all. the. time. lol I got asked if Tyrion was part husky. :S Oh Lisa I LOVE that collar and Leash set. TOTALLY putting it on my to buy list when Tyrion is bigger!
  4. He's doing quite well. Though he is becoming a stubborn butthead and refusing to do things at puppy school, much like he does here at home. He'll turn his back on me. They told me a couple of ways to try and combat it. So will be implanting those this week when I go to train him. He thinks he is bigger than he actually is, has NO FEAR. Just bounds mindlessly up to dogs 5-6 times his size. So have to keep an eye on how he is interacting. Our class has two merle aussies! :D One is darker and one is VERY pale, they're so cute.
  5. lovely boy!We just got back from puppy school. Frozen and wet. Not leaving the house again today!!
  6. If you wanted to do a road trip to Ballarat and have a puppy play day I have three kids (under 5) one is a baby so wouldn't be interacting and the other two are five and three and are good at taking direction in how to act around dogs. I also have a pembroke corgi puppy who loves the company of other dogs. We also have a couple of good playgrounds nearly always packed with kids.
  7. She was technically a client so I was careful to bite my tongue I would've told them off otherwise, their behaviour was unreal! A client! That would have given me more reason to (politely) request she keep them in check. I know! Honestly I was too shocked and afraid that anything I said would not have been on the polite side, more like "lady, keep your feral kids in check!" She was apologetic about it, but still....... Its a difficult one! I've learnt to surround myself with friends who have simular parenting styles to me cause otherwise I have trouble dealing with kids who teach my kids to do things I've told them not too! lol Your Puppy sounds like he did VERY well though all things going on! Which, inadvertently possibly turned out to be a good learning experience for him.
  8. At pre puppy school we first did attention games. Saying his name, and marking his eye contact with me with a "yes" then reward. When teaching "come" we were taught to say his name for attention then the command "come" I do this throughout the day, while training with him during 5 min intervals and between other people like others have mention above. For walking on a loose lead I reward for his attention which he usually jogging along side me looking up at me. I feed him as close to my left leg as possible so he knows that if he wants a reward I want him to be as close to that left leg as possible. Once we did that I started adding the command "heel" so he knows that I expect him there when that word is said. WHen he gets it correct mark it with a short "yes" (same idea as clicker training but instead of click he gets the word "yes"). and Reward with a treat.

  10. God Im glad im not the only one! At the dog school, Tyrion is GREAT. He has a ball, listens, lots of eye contact, heels for the most part etc. etc. Can I get him to do ANYTHING at home? No. I get out his treats, give him a command and he turns his back on me. So so so frustrating! I think it probably helps that I was raised in a rural area where you pretty much HAD to be dog aware. Plus we had Koolies (workers), then corgi's when we moved into town. I find kids raised in farming areas tend to be more dog aware than those raised in suburban areas. So even though I do live in town, I just carry on what I was taught as a kid. Though, my eldest son's kinder had responsible pet week where they had a person come with a Beagle and talk to them about dogs, do's and don'ts with dogs etc. recognising certain actions which could indicate a dangerous dog etc. So that was great. :)
  11. We're a bit the same, not many kiddies around here, thank the heavens. Sounds like you did really well! You should have offered to crate the kids hahaha. Yup, my kids are great with the Tyrion. They generally leave him alone, unless they/he wants to play then they just get his toys for him, and play with those with him. Some of their friends though... lol I have to crate him after a while so they give him space, otherwise they smother him. He'll be trying to walk away and they'll try grab/play etc. Crates are awesome.
  12. You haven't failed at all! Sounds very stressful situation though, and I think your guest needs to have better control of her children. I have 3 kids fairly close together. My oldest turns 5 next month. There is no way that sort of behaviour would fly with me. If they kept up their behaviour after being told to stop, I would have taken them home. Screaming, just doesn't get through to kids (much like it doesn't get through to dogs). Shame the kids were so ratty it could have been a great learning experience for both the kids and Hank had Mum actually dealt with the situation properly.
  13. OK. So, basically - if we are inside, Tyrion flatly refuses to do anything I ask him. Even with his favourite food as bribery (chicken). However, if we are outside he will train. butthead of a dog. Anyone got any suggestions on ways I can train him INSIDE? its been really really cold out here and some days is it just to wet to go outside, but I would like to be doing at least 5 minutes a day just to run through sit/drop/stay and recalls. >.<
  14. No thunder. He hasn't spent much time outside yet cause I need to get the front fence fixed. It took him all of 10 minutes to figure out to dig under it. so he's only outside if we are for the moment. The sun has come out for the first time today. lol maybe I will get to take him out after all!
  15. Good to hear you had a great experience! Much easier when you've got good neighbours! Looks like a lovely day up your way Lisa! Wish it was like that here! We just had a big bunch of rain and hail. Another night I wont be taking Tyrion out for a walk! Can't wait for the warmer weather! Got him some new toys today so he can be a maniac inside with those
  16. All these puppy pics are just gorgeous! They're all growing so fast! Tyrion is now 14 weeks! Cuddling my 5 year old son and playing with his stuffed crocodile:
  17. This Exactly! I'm left wondering why was a six year old left unattended with a dog anyway. I don't care how much you TRUST your dog kids can be unknowingly cruel, and there are several scenarios in which can lead to a dog attacking. Family friends of ours when I was growing up received stitches in the head from their pet rottie, who had previously been incredibly gentle and loving pet. However, They didn't get their dog PTS because, only moments before their son had tried to drive a screwdriver through the dogs foot. Understandably its going to attack. It makes me so sad to hear dog attack stories in the news, especially when a large majority of family dog attacks kid - could be avoided through adult supervision.
  18. not a huge toy drive. Could be we just don't have the right ones yet! lol he usually responds well to food, but at the moment he is being a stubborn butthead.
  19. Ok, anyone else had this problem? At puppy school, Tyrion is raring to go! He does whats asked of him, is hyper as anything, loves playing with the other dogs, responds well to training. Tried doing some training with him the last couple of days at home. And he just looks at me as if to say "you have to be kidding yea?" and turns around and goes back to his crate. I tried a couple of different types of foods, but he literally just turns his nose up at it and walks away. Am I doing it at the wrong time of day? Treats not good enough? Is it his age? 14 weeks? that hes trying to get out of doing stuff. Seriously its dinner time, and I thought oh cool he'll be nice and hungry I'll do some work with him, and he is just like "meh whatever. I'm not THAT hungry if I have to sit/stand/drop/stay for it, I'll just lay in my crate" Suggestions?!

    Dew Claws

So Tyrion's breeder came to see him today - as I said, he was quite surprised to hear Tyrion had rear dew claws as its the first time he has had a pup born with them. Anyway, he asked as what our vet suggested we do which is to get them removed at time of desexing. He said that was fine and to get a quote from the vet and send it to him so he can cover the cost of the removal.
  21. Aw love the photo of Nova cuddling his teddy! Today, Tyrion's breeder came to see him! He was very interested to see the rear dew claws - and can't believe that he and his vet missed them. He told us that Tyrion is growing very nicely and to get a quote from the vet and that he will cover the cost of the rear dew claw removal.
  22. I'd approach toilet training the same way I would with any dog/pup. Take her outside on a leash as often as possible and praise her whenever she goes to the toilet with lots of treats and pats. Most importantly make sure she is taken out straight after she wakes from a sleep, and after meals. Plus every hour or so during the day just till she gets the hang of it. Are you crate training? as that cn be a very helpful tool on toileting training. Koolies are incredibly intelligent it won't take her long to twig :)
  23. Nova is just gorgeous! Also, tyrion graduated prepuppy school last night!
  24. Thought i'd post some new photos! Here is my cheeky pup! With his favourite toy: Learning Focus: Im sitting but I really would like to chase the cat over there...
