  1. I have mini and giant schnauzers, the minis are great for alerting about trouble, the giants are the ones ready to act. My old girl certainly wouldn;t back down to a stranger coming into the house (if left to her own decision), the younger one is all european breeding with a dash of working stock, so she is one who certainly has the breed characteristics of guarding and protection. I;m pretty sure if trouble broke out, at least a couple of the minis will also join in to protect me. Growing up we had a cocker who was a great guard dog and would also go ballistic is there was a stranger in the house - esp the tv repair man who got bailed up in the corner behind the tv and the window cleaner never learned to stop letting himself around the back of the house without letting us know first, but at least he has a bucket to protect himself!
  2. :D thank you! happy now i have seen the gp pups!
  3. feed a bit more :) so long as she is getting exercise and not gorging, then she should up the weight a bit, if she puts on to much, to knoch back the food a tad.
  4. swollen vuvla and nipple development should be a couple of hints. If vet is so confused, why not test hormone levles?
  5. oh how adorable! :D front ones never seem to get used here and dry up within a few days
  6. my 2 giants have a sofa to sleep on
  7. sorry about the lost one skyhaven congrats on the beagle babies - photos?? Anglesun where are more GP pups pics?
  8. are they sure it is a season and not a bladder infection?
  9. i;ve had several come in from 5 months, got a bit worried when one waited until 9 months for 1st season!
  10. the O P was referring to a product sold for human mothers ... which can apparently get rid of baby belly in no time flat Purple-Bliss :) if you can take a couple of photos of your girl showing that droop ... perhaps we can help more ? oh ok, the link would not open for me.
  11. That;s because when they are newly clean, they dazzle people with the brightness so much they can;t see them! ;)
  12. sounds like your google has the courage!
  13. That;s true, but a little consideration goes a long way. If there is a dog i like in the ring, I will give it chance to settle but it is funny how some judges will just write a dog off for not perferming perfectly 100% of the time.
  14. As others, take some familar stuff for him to the new place and take him along whenever you are there so he can find some spots to settle in while you are there and let him get used to the place and his smell around the place. on moving day, would he be happier staying with a friend/kennels for the day while all the boxes get moved around and last minute packing done? Then you can just take him to new home with some things already unpacked and it more homey for him
  15. I;ve just done a google search and got lots of aussie websites for horse ones, tried a UK search and got lots of sites with nothing to do with hoods (eg robin hood bay  was the top result!) Also, i presume you don;t use plastic bowls as they can cause the same thing
  16. In UK all health tests done under bva scheme with registered dogs (either breed or activity register) will be published in the back of the quartlery breed record supplements. Don;t know if they still do it, but you used to be able to buy a CD with all the health tests for your breed from way back up to recent.
  17. That happened to a doler and 2 of her white swiss sheps, she got them in time and managed to get one breathing again, the story is in this forum somewhere, along with other doler stories of similar happenings.
  18. if you mean she has a baggy baby belly, then just get a little tummy tuck done when she is desexed. Exercise and feeding correctly won;t help some bitches who can lose their underline with just one litter, some after a few litters while others always bounce back their shape. The belly bands are for males who cock their leg in the house
  19. that;s all fine until something makes the collar twist so they can no longer back out
  20. lure into the down, instead of giving a down command, then lure back up to sit/stand or use hand touch if your dog knows this, instead of luring with a treat.
  21. i would not trust a $2 to be stong wnough to be safe to use
  22. If you were using one in a line up behind me, I'd probably not be too thrilled. I really don't need my dog trying to turn around while he's being judged. For individual judging? Fill your boots. I hear ya HW. In a Puppy In Show line up, I actually had a handler directly behind us (and I mean very close) throw his bunch of keys for his Puppy's attention and they hit my Puppy on the hocks. I was hardly surprised when my girl broke her lovely stack to turn to see what had hit her. Pity, the judge was giving my bitch a damn good look prior, (one of those times where everyone tells you afterwards as well as that knowing feeling you get in the ring). Don't think she saw what happened and I am too soft to do much else than give a bit of a glare. I guess in this situation I would have preferred a squeaker, LOL. I;d have picked up the keys and pocketed them! Squeakers are fine for individual times, but not for line ups. We had a chap one year who insisted on using a clicker to get his dogs attention (ie click to get the dog to react, not as a training aid to mark when the dog was doing something right). So we had other dogs who were clicker trained stopping what they were doing to get their reward!
  23. There are several people in my area doing this and all earn a good wage from it. They ones I know personally already had dog handling experience, one is a former obedience trainer and has competed at a good level, the other did a few years in kennels and for the rspca, so they can both cope well with the more difficult dogs. One friend has been bitten a few times doing home visits, as the dog was protecting the house from the stranger (she now has a pepper spray for protection!). It would be worth dog some sort of general canine study course, so you can show you have understanding of what dogs are like and that you can manage all sorts of breeds and temperaments.
  24. I;d just buy a normal choke chain and thread through whatever ribbon/thread I wanted, just double over and glue the ends
