  1. ... I am not saying I cope well at all, it is horrible when a loved one is in pain and this stresses me out to the max. However I still have a responsibility to slap myself, tell myself to keep my poop together and make sure I am very careful in how I carry out instructions. It is really sad for the the owner and vet in this terrible tragedy.
  2. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realise that 4 x overdose of a painkiller would be dangerous to a human or pet. I would think that if you were unsure of how to get 0.5ml then you would err on the lighter side. A 1ml syringe is available from any chemist for less than a dollar. Even a 5ml syringe will allow you to accurately measure 0.5ml. I don't buy into the argument that an upset owner will not be in the right frame of mind to doses more accurately than 4 x over. I have a 5 year old daughter and there have been so many times when she has been sick or in pain and we have had to give really small doses of nurofen especially when she was a small baby. We have been extremely upset, but never has this impacted on administering the correct amount. Having said that, it is strange that the vet didn't supply more appropriate pain killers when they left the surgery?? Whenever my dog left surgery the vet always supplied at least 4 days more than what would normally be required, just incase the pain went on for a longer period than anticipated. This didn't mean that we would administer more than required or ever overdose. Anyway it is sad for all concerned. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the vet should have said see an emergency vet or tough it out and come first thing in the morning. Probably the vet cared a bit too much and sought to offer a temporary and emergency solution to the pain.
  3. How is Sasha's paw today? Here is a link for Mushers Secret http://waggle.com.au/products/search/index/s/mushers+secret
  4. I hope someone can help you with reasons. If it is an ongoing problem invest in a jar of Mushers Secret as it is mainly a preventative and protector.
  5. great! Please let us know how the pawpaw goes for her.
  6. I have found it to work really fast overnight, so if you can manage to get some on while asleep ????? You might be surprised at the results. In any case I am not sure how tasty it is ??
  7. My vet recommends Lucas Pawpaw ointment. tI is brilliant for healing. http://www.lucaspapaw.com.au/ Many husky owner swear by "Mushers Secret" which is therapeutic and also protects the paws from cuts, cracks and worn paws. Do a google, I am sure it is available from the various mushing supply stores here in Oz.
  8. It really sounds like you have done your very best. I am so sorry to hear of this situation. All I can suggest is to give it a few days and see how you feel. There is a slight possibility that the dog in question may realise that it has made a grave error. I don't know, but discuss this with your vet and see what he/she says.
  9. Oh, what a horrible situation for you all. I would see what your vet thinks, they may be able to prescribe some medication that may help with the aggression while dominance is being redirected. An in home visit by a behaviourist would probably be very valuable and well worth considering.
  10. Hi Puddleduck. I don't think you should ever wake up a dog when it is dreaming. I understand it is stressful watching the episode but as the saying goes "let sleeping dogs lie" Obviously this is not the case with yours, but a woken dog may snap and bite without even realising what is going on. I would let the nightmare run and allow Bear to wake up on his own. Edit. I just see BC Crazy is saying similar
  11. I'd hate to think you are right here, but this could well be the case. Again Huskies would be a poor choice for a fighting dog me thinks.
  12. It really seem ridiculous that someone would steal huskies when so many are available through Husky Rescues across the country. I honestly can't see someone buying an adult dog off said thieves for any money that would make the effort and risk worthwhile. Either way, someone who steals is a real scumbag and only the lowest of the low would steal a dog. Maybe breeds other than Huskies might be attractive to thieves - dunno which ones - I would guess mini-schnauzers would be one that is targeted, but most sensible owners would keep them inside.
  13. I think they are a waste of money. Just get or borrow a post digging shovel, dig a 60cm deep hole as small in diameter as possible (if using a normal shovel) each time you drop a poop in the hole, chuck a handful of dirt on top. Regarding he worm farms, most worming tabs and treatments many people use for their dogs will also kill garden worms when they eat the poop..
  14. It seems common sense to me that if your dog is not highly socialised, then why would you risk going to a off-leash park? This is both in terms of aggressors and the timid. In my experience in off-leash parks, dogs are like kids after being in school all day - they run amok having fun with the relative freedom occasionally there will be a bit of harmless push and shove as kids test each other out. Most dogs are social animals and will run up to other dogs for a sniff and greet, which is totally normal and expected behaviour. If you have little choice and want to take your on-leash dog to such a place, be prepared to step in between any approaching exuberant dog. Blaming the off-leash owners and off-leash dogs is unreasonable in my opinion unless the un-leashed dog is being aggressive. Having said that, there is no excuse for owners using violence to solve disputes. I wonder if there was two sides to the story reported? I wonder if the off-leash dogs were displaying more than happy attention to the leashed dog? I wonder if the off-leash owner reacted badly and aggressively when told to keep his dogs under control and I wonder if the leashed dog owner reacted as though he and his child were being attacked and lashed out? Again, violence is totally unacceptable in these type of disputes.
  15. In my opinion this is a well reasoned argument. Well done. So how do the two of you suggests this is done? I have previously asked this question of Luke GP (three times actually) What do you suggest we do, that is not illegal? Unfortunately I see no solution while there are so many knuckle heads out there attracted to the Bull breeds. The sad thing is that there are also many great dogs and owners of these type of dogs. I would also be reasonably confident in assuming that members here on this forum are among the best of the best when it comes to bull breeds. Unfortunately the good ones are tarnished by the bad and horrific stories that end up in the media. I understand that responsible owners feel anger at the media's portrayal of bull breeds and say it is unjust. But I am sure if a poodle or labrador mauled someone to death it would certainly make the news. I have seen numerous "news" pieces by bull breed advocate groups in response to any media frenzy, so they do get a say, I am just not sure how many people are prepared to accept the good and the bad. We as the public have nothing to fear from the good but have a right to be concerned with the bad. This is much like the gun control debate, there is nothing to fear from law abiding gun enthusiasts but much to fear from the bad ones. Unfortunately firearms do find their way into the hands of the bad but how many here would like to see our gun control legislation changed to an American model? While this is an extreme example of fear and control, the dilemma of how to keep knuckle heads from owning any dog remains relevant. I am sorry I can't give you a solution, all I can suggest is that calm and rational discussion needs to take place between all concerned parties. Anyway, I am new on this forum and therefore not privy to any individual's particular beef in debates like this one, so my comments are simply my own views on a topic that I find interesting. FWIW I have met some wonderful bull breed dogs and their owners.
  16. In my opinion this is a well reasoned argument. Well done.
  17. that is so brilliant! It really made me laugh
  18. Well Done!!! I recently went to an open day for the Western Australian Sled Dog association (WASDA). THere were over 200 dogs there, mainly Huskies and Mals, but there were also the racing Euro Hounds and even a stumpy Bull Terrier that was having an absolute ball. I believe that any dog that likes to run is a good candidate for the sport. I was so taken with it that I ordered a scooter even though I have a long wait until I have a dog old enough to participate
  19. Dream on. My sister has two purebred undesexed bitches. Her vet asked her every time she took them for their vaccinations and checkup when would she like them booked in for desexing. In the end she lost it and asked the idiot. if you desex every female pup that comes here where on earth do you think your next clients pups are going to come from?? Take a long quiet look next time you are at a vets...ANY VETS. Everyone of them are activly encouraging every pup owner to get the 'job' done. Even pure bred main registered pups and you just try and find a mainregister pup of any sex available for sale. Considering not that long ago on average there were 2,500 to 3,000 maltese pups a year registered last I heard there were 200 for 2012. considering there is a small white fluffy on every second street corner to be seen they are one of the most popular breeds to be seen. obviously 90percent of them cant have come from a registered breeder thats for sure. I have no doubt that most vets will encourage desexing of family pets , not everyone shows or is a registered breeder so recommending desexing seems like a responsible bit of advice - go figure. Neither this nor PETA are indications that the sky is falling. Except from day one she told him they were main registered and had no wish to desex them. So where do you get the idea he thought they were solely family pets? I wrongly assumed from your post that you were saying 'all vets' say all dogs should be desexed. It does at face value seem like your sister's vet is very single minded and I can understand your view which has probably been formed from experiences such as this. This being said, my experience with Vets and registered breeders has been overwhelmingly positive and as such I am confident that registered breeders will be around for a very long time.
  20. BARF is a model of raw feeding, you don't need to buy registered BARF patties, you just need to follow the model and make up your own.

  22. Considering our PM, the President of the USA and the Queen of England are all dog owners and lovers I really don't thing PETA has any chance in preventing people from owning pets. Couple that with the economics of shutting down billion dollar industries from Vets to manufacturers of pet accessories and food, I can't see any radical pet prevention legislation being passed. Regarding the laws for breeding - I have no insight into these issues
  23. If you want to go for a Prey model raw diet, then you will need approximately 80 % meat from animal muscles, 10 % fresh bones 5% Liver and 5% other organ or non-liver offal. THis will give your dog all of the nutrients he needs. If you are going to feed vegis then they must be cooked/steamed and pureed otherwise the dog wont obtain the nutrients from the vegis and they will simply act as a filler or roughage. Have a read up on Prey Model RAW and BARF model diets for more info.
