Should You Breed, Does It Change A Male Dog
espinay2 replied to best4koda's topic in General Dog Discussion
With collection they tend to just like the vet a lot more ;). -
I will be putting in my two cents on this issue, there have been some very well thought logical points in this thread up that I will be stealing. I do believe that this could be damaging to breeds when we already have quite a geographical disadvantage when it comes to genetics. Its interesting though you thinking that they would get too much feedback when I have been working in a National organisation who choses to sort through the feedback and do it because they have found it to be very valuable so worth the bother. It should certainly be possible to gather this feedback at a state level but from what people are saying they haven't been given a fair chance to even voice their opinion at that level either- particularly I assume those that are not on DOL, Ozshow etc. And that is I guess that may be where I have the problem- that quite often even after reading my gazette I find myself out of the loop and behind the times and once a decision has been made it is so much harder to reverse it. A few pages ago I posted that the dogsNSW vote is Wednesday and contact info for directors. Certainly it didn't take more than 10 minutes for me to write a message stating my views AND get a reply. My suggestion is people actually DO start being proactive and speak to the board members if they want their view heard. People DO have the chance to be heard. But to do it they need to talk to the people they want to listen!

Here is a useful article for you: http://www.positivedogs.com/articles/early_doesnt_mean.html I agree that physical exercise for your pup should be mostly free play rather than walking. Much better for growing bones and joints.

Growing up we had Kelpies. Names included 'Kelly', 'Folly' and 'Klytie'.

Also note that PennHIP is the 'newer' testing system - it requires three x-ray views rather than the just one as required by the AVA scheme (Willis system) which has been around for years. The PennHIP x-rays need to be done by a vet trained in that system and they need to be sent to the US (UPenn) for scoring. Tthe AVA ones need to be submitted to a scorer in Australia (either at random through the AVA or directly to a scorer of your choice).

DogsNSW Board of Directors meet/vote on Wednesday. Tom Couchman has advised me that he will be voting against the motion. I do not know how others on the Board will be voting though. I recommend Dogs NSW members contact members of the board to state their views (Remember to keep things factual and non abusive if you actually want your views considered!) You can find contact details here: http://dogsnsw.org.a...-directors.html Naturally how the DogsNSW ANKC representatives then vote on the issue when the ANKC meets will depend on how this vote goes. I understand SA voted unanimously against it?

Any head tilt/possible nausea? If so investigate ideopathic geriatric vestibular syndrome and discuss it with your vet if it sounds like what she is doing.

This is a good basic checklist: http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/prepared/ In regards to leads, a handy thing to have on hand is a heap of kennel slip leads. I have a heap from here: http://www.countrybrookdesign.com/designer-collars/kennel-and-grooming-leads We have them all over the place, but I have put some specifically in the 'animal emergency box' (basically a plastic tub in the hall cupboard which has what we need for the animals in an emergency) so I don't need to search if I need some quickly.

What are the rules for dogs with cropped ears? Would the rules for docked dogs be different? I know breeders have imported cropped dogs in the past for breeding?

I Shouldn't Feed Turkey To My Dogs
espinay2 replied to sheena's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The issue with turkey skin is when people give their dog the fatty cooked skin off the thanksgiving turkey. Some dogs can't cope with the high level of cooked fats and it can trigger pancreatitis. VERY different from giving raw turkey necks which for a start generally don't have skin, are raw (and the raw skin is different from cooked), and are generally low fat (raw turkey meat is actually considered fairly low fat) -
One good resource (in NSW anyway) is the RFS 'fires near me' phone app. RFS and SES also have Facebook feeds. And there is also one called NSW Emergency coverage that is good.

ACES eye exams - the eye specialists come to Canberra periodically to do these to the vet clinics in Kippax and Lyneham (Canbera Vet Hospital on the corner of Northbourne and Barton Hwy). you need to contact one or both to sort out an appointment for eye cert (they tend to have the specialists there on different days and only make appts for their own clinic). DNA testing can be done with any vet. You need to order the kit through the testing company - they send the kits and you take it to your vet. Quite a few vets will do hip and elbow x-rays - as I don't get mine done in Canberra I will leave it up to others to recommend. The answer will vary depending on whether you plan to do PennHIP or AVA. Note you may want to see if you can get this thread moved to either the health or breeding forums.

We did an evacuation recently during catastrophic fire conditions. We got out early. Luckily we only needed to be gone for a day and Luckily I had been working on the evacuation plan that week so basically knew what to do. The exercise did show up a few glitches in the system. These are things I am working on now and putting together an emergency/evacuation kit for us and the animals. We know we can get the dogs and cats out reasonably well (but I would have no room for dog crates -though I have tie out stakes at least). I may be able to take some of the poultry but not all. And sheep are an issue too. We can move them to a slightly safer area of the property if we have time. If I couldn't get my dogs out I am not sure I would leave. We have a couple of contingencies in that type of situation if time to implement them.

IMO I wouldn't be using the Lida list as any real guide. Certainly for my breed it had no basis in reality, listing some really obscure and uncommon conditions for the breed and missing most (actually nearly all) of the important ones. (and yes I have contacted them about it, to no effect at all) Ah - fair enough. I've never looked at it in great detail, but have stumbled across it numerous times and bookmarked it for reference. That's good to know though, thanks espinay. :) If you want a better guide as a starting point, though not Australian, IMO the following are worth looking at as well as referring to breed clubs: http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/intro.htm http://www.offa.org/index.html

It really is a breed specific thing though I guess you need to distinguish between 'required' by the ANKC for the purposes of registration and 'recommended' for a breed which may or may not be information you can get from a breed club. The required ones will be in the regulations (ANKC/State bodies). The number of tests (and breeds) in this category are a lot smaller than those that may be recommended but have no official requirement. Those with required tests may also have recommended tests Those without required tests may or may not have recommended tests Sometimes an Australian breed club may be silent on test recommendations, yet there will be tests that are recommended and/or performed by breeders or may be recommended by overseas clubs (or sometimes required overseas for registration) As you can see, no real simple answer.

Showpony, is this what you're alking about with the sleeping area? Wanderer Gazebo Hub Dome Tent - 3 person Looks great! Wow that looks handy! Might have to keep that one in mind for sure! I think there is one though that actually sits under the gazebo? (basically encloses the gazebo). Edited: this one? http://www.bcf.com.au/Products/TentGuide/GazebosScreenhousesBeachDomes/Deluxe_Gazebo_Tent_Inner_Kit.aspx

Here is my Rising Star for 2013 'Louise' (Despreaux La Chanteuse), currently 8 months. Her first show for the year last weekend and a Minor Puppy in Group :) . She is such a sweetheart and made a few fans. Hamish is going to have to lift his game or her fan club may soon rival his

I have had one of the original compacts for the last few years and ad HW says it has survived where bigger ones have failed. Pegging down, using guy ropes if it looks to be windy and if up over night dropping it down and cross bracing with guy ropes has seen it last even big wind storms (surprised even me). It may look light but this one has lasted far longer that any of the bigger and supposedly more sturdy ones I had before. Given the choice I may go with a compact deluxe which wasn't available when I bought mine but I have no complaints about the original.

Oztrail Compact. Will actually fit in the car and reasonably easy to carry. I can put it up on my own.

Yes, it is ok to use a choker chain. I always use a choker chain, even on pups. Make sure it fits properly. Not too chunky and thick, but also not too thin. I use a reasonably short lead - about 60cm or so long - as I find this easier with the big guys. Even with pups, because they are a good height you don't generally need all the extra length. You will work out what suits you in time though as different people prefer different things. Not sure where you are and what you have available there, but a soft plain nylon or leather show lead is good to start with. Of a reasonable thickness to hold a large dog and not be hard on your hands. Don't get anything too thin. From there when it comes to leads you can really go crazy with all the bling that is available these days. But they are just fun and not essential - particularly when you are just starting out and working out what suits you. As mentioned above, just make it fun and don't be afraid to make mistakes. We have all been there :)

What Do You Do To Prolong Your Dog's Life?
espinay2 replied to Blackdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Promoting longevity starts way before they are born as a lot can be inherited. And then begins from day one you have them. For me it is natural diet, minimal chemicals, keeping them fit, keeping them lean, ensuring teeth and mouth are healthy (as periodontal disease can be the cause of many internal problems), keeping them mentally happy and free of stress, keeping them well maintained/groomed and ensuring their environment is a healthy one. I too only give supplements when needed. Sometimes even then it comes down to the luck of the draw but at least you then know you have given them the best life possible. The important thing too is that you don't stress so much about losing them that you forget to enjoy the now. Dogs live in the now and sometimes we need to take that lesson from them. -
So, she would have said yes but is whinging about not getting any money. Whether she would have said yes or not is really irrelevant as she didn't get the opportunity to make that decision. The owner of the bitch took something that was not hers that the owner of the dog would normally be compensated financially for. Guaranteed if it was a registered breeder's dog that has been used they would be yelling about the stud service fee too.
