  1. Having been to U.S. pet stores and seen entire walls covered in little perspex boxes full of puppies (so expensive the stores offer a line of credit) I am very pleased to hear this. Amish puppy farms located in New York State are notorious which is a separate problem in itself, I can see they are trying to reduce reliance on mills but it won't stop them from shipping elsewhere.
  2. Reminds me of the dreadfully sad poem 'First They Came...' Very very sorry in advance before you look it up, I know it sounds inappropriate to mention in regards to dogs it but it's a perfect snapshot of what happens when people feel immune to persecution or are apathetic in regards to what is happening to other people.
  3. When I've had short hair dogs clipped for a blood test or I.V. it takes a long time for that little patch to fill in. I think it's because they have to wait to shed as new fur comes in. Not any damage to follicles.
  4. Does your washing machine fit the inner on it's own? I'm a chronic dog bed/towel washer. I do the inners in the wash but because I'm weird about smells I do the disinfectant and hose blast beforehand to make sure I've reached the very very centre. Hate 'doggy' smelling dog beds. And they loooooove a clean bed. Use a dog brush pre-wash to get extra hair off the outer. I guess it's an issue if you have a top-load agitator machine. The agitator can tear the thin fabric. You could always do the blast technique and leave it to hang in the hot sunshine? Or grab a big machine safe bag and throw that in the wash. Sorry, not much advice. Signed OCD bed washer LOL
  5. There's not always choice when breeding them. People can be very sloppy when it comes to that. Large mums have large litters and you can get a cute lge breed pup for $50 or just free handed over the gate because there's no buyers and too many pups. People choose to own them for so many intended reasons. Or just that they prefer big dogs. Identification with multi mix breeds is absolutely impossible which is why we use terms like Bull Arab, Staghound and Mastiff cross to visually identify them. The news always want an I.D. but fact is, it's practically irrelevant anyway after what they have done. It can't be pinned on any one breed this time. Rest in Peace to the dear man who brutally lost his life, and sending love to his family.
  6. Somehow I missed the bit about a senior small. No I wouldn't recommend upsetting the applecart. When the time comes, my above advice still stands.
  7. Personally I do find it very much a political piece and could probably do with moving out of the news section. But I'm still worried at the same time and have been for a while. Maybe it's just my imagination but I feel there's been more and more vehement animal activism over the last few years and they are influencing people, laws and parties. Even my insta feed is disturbing and needs a bit of an unfollow spree. I found upsetting info by flicking through the news section on the Peta site yesterday trying to find the 'extinction' quote (can't find it). BTW, not recommended reading. It's horrific.
  8. Maybe a rescue who does temperament assessments, places carefully (a home visit to meet the crew), offers a trial period and backs their dogs up would suit? You can find your chosen breed in rescue too. Even pups and adolescents. I'd go for one raised or in care in a similar environment to yours so they have been 'tested' with all sorts of critters.
  9. Keeping naming of parties out of this but it definitely is political and budgetary. Different NSW state govts have different ways. It's been a long slow process of trying to get land and funding. Apparently another major party says they will provide funding if elected. Will wait to see. Our current govt invested in the e.g the new Grafton greyhound track. 4+ mil. A different kind of welfare funding. https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/nsw-government-invests-greyhound-racing-future
  10. Thank you asal. Very sobering information.
  11. Do you mean when you say 'discussion about the cost', that you are asking them to lower their fees (or negotiate)?

I've seriously run out of things to say to you that will sink in. I'm putting you on ignore.
  13. No. It's not fair on your older dog to bring in a puppy. Leave things the way they are.

@coneye all I mean is the topic is literally titled 'Scared' so she's already realised the situation is dire and I agree she isn't making good choices at the moment. I get where you're passionately coming from, you just could have put it more succinctly without the added jabs of her being an idiot. People come here for advice which is going to be varied, whether they take it or not is up to them.

Ouch coneye! That's full on. Despite her massive stuff-up she doesn't deserve to be ridiculed on a public forum. Belinda74, from a rescue perspective, there's lots of staffies on death row who wouldn't hurt a fly so a dog with rapidly escalating antisocial behaviour and a history of biting children is not even in the running. Let alone a huge liability issue for anyone who owns or rehomes her. You have 2 options and need to make a choice. Sorry to rub salt in the wound but she's your dog and your responsibility.

I'm so sorry. It's a commitment from all of you to go through the behavioural process and possibly meds. OR (and I don't ever say it lightly) there might be something really wrong with her and she would need to go to god. With this in mind, I suggest you take in as much as you can from here and behavioural professionals. It's your tot that I worry about. If it were a house with only adults, I'd say you have more time. But It's got to be one or the other. You can't expect her to be passed on/rehomed with that history. And the only way to literally save her life is to get specialist help right now. A pen and a muzzle in the meantime.
  17. Crunch numbers and see if you can save on a combo from Budget Pets. You only need to worm every three months so drontal allwormer is great. Valueheart is cheap heartworm monthly and plain Simparica is flea, mite, tick (incl paralysis monthly). It's not the same as giving one to cover everything, so you need your calendar.
  18. I'd never do it, it's not safe in Sydney (I understand about out camping and just running in to grab milk and the newspaper ) but on the other hand, why shouldn't it be safe? Why do we need to worry about dog attacks and thieving scumbags? Just a vent. I'm annoyed at the whole thing.
  19. Some farmstay dog boarding places have swimming holes. I'm sure for a fee, they would allow you to visit for a paddle.
  20. High percentage of cavs don't come into rescue until they have mammary tumours, green teeth and a shot heart. They are less likely to be the brand new healthy shiny ones snapped up in pounds and gumtree.
  21. My mobile phone number is private. I can't imagine the number of calls I'd get, when I see the inbox is bad enough. All excuses, who knows which are truthful. We all saw the covid fallout coming (for whatever reason the dogs and cats are dumped). Check gumtree and FB groups. There's a massive flurry of selling and FTGH of dogs who would have cost thousands. And always the staffie x types. Poor staffies & bull breeds. Covid buying doesn't explain the dumpage of long owned mature and senior dogs unless it really is the rental crisis and people unable to afford vet bills. They weren't covid purchases so we must be also dealing with hardship, social and economic issues.
  22. This also explains the amount of vetwork we're doing. It's not that much dearer than before, but times are really tough. Supplies and food, even online has leapt up significantly almost overnight. You used to be able to grab a bargain. I guess the new online prices are the new bargains. The number of contacts I get from people who can't keep their dog is heartbreaking. And pounds ... 30 dogs in just one email.
  23. Did you contact Andrea at Companions For Life (Maremma Rescuer) to see if she has room?
