Seriously! I'm so sorry LMO, sometimes people just don't think.

You'd be better off cutting through all the weird agreements and purchasing a dog you can actually own with no strings attached.

Big weight bearing bones have white marrow which is the bad stuff. Especially bad when butchers cut them up the middle to give dogs easy access to the marrow. If you like to give bones, select ones with that red honeycomb looking marrow but not ones that are going to splinter. Depends on what's available and the size & strength of the dog so you have to select carefully. Or the chicken feet mentioned. They are kind of creepy looking LOL but low fat and the collagen contained is a very healthy bonus.

Vulnerable Breed Competition Final | Crufts 2023
_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in General Dog Discussion
Half the pound dogs aren't even chipped, only those who stick their neck out by being in any way registered will suffer. Even plain BIN holders. So yes, the crushing reg breeders under the burden of laws sadly, not affecting those who aren't even following basic requirements. -
I don't know why the breeders aren't using Dol. It's a shame because you did learn things that will otherwise be lost knowledge. But I hear Dol referred to as 'bitchy' which doesn't encourage membership. Rescuers have largely abandoned too, using FB instead. And it was a great resource too. I've thought about leaving. Anti rescue sentiment has stung a few times with unwarranted criticism. And is often confused with militant animal rights movements as opposed to animal welfare. Maybe breeders are feeling the same way. I see some harsh criticism and designer breed promo that used to be disallowed and was sorted out asap. I wouldn't use a purebreed forum where the members it was built for have felt vulnerable and alienated.

I've done 4 enucleation over time. All seniors. No prostheses. With fluffies the hair grows in and you just see a winky dog. With short hair dogs you do see a sunken socket. None needed a special anaesthetist so I can't help you there but if the specialist recommends it, it must be very important because of their squishy faces. The difference it made for each dog was amazing! (Having had a tiny scratch on my cornea I can't believe how stoic dogs are with much worse).

Cert 4 dog trainers course and organisation membership query.
_PL_ replied to Bubba's topic in General Dog Discussion
No help, but well done for chasing leads. There should be more service dog trainers. Not sure if it's going to be relevant but 'Molly Polly Assistance Dog' via FB has two Silkies trained as diabetic service dogs (ACT) and may be able to point you in the right direction, for a beginning at least. They were a little ahead of their time so had to search really hard to find trainer assistance. -
I was also wondering if it was the oatmeal, being a grain that some dogs can't eat and can respond to poorly if used in shampoo.

Mine are all cremated and they will come with me when I go. I completely understand about the challenges of grieving. Many have passed away in my arms and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Her soul will always be with you, no matter what you do with her earthly remains.

Companion Animal Welfare Grants (NSW)
_PL_ replied to _PL_'s topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Makes sense that they would check out applicants from top to bottom. It's a LOT of money. -
Applications open soon. https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/councils/responsible-pet-ownership/companion-animal-welfare-grants/

That very testing stage. Even small breeds go through it. I understand how you can feel overwhelmed with a med size working breed mix. Do you have decent (aka properly staffed and supervised) day care facility nearby? A couple of days a week rumbling with similar size pups can really wear them out if you can't be home and would at least give you a break.

@Concernedparticipant do you have an update?
-
For just worming, if you're not using the monthly combination products that cover almost everything. I use Drontal Allwormer Chews, it's every 3 months. (For babies, Drontal Puppy Suspension per recommended worming schedule).

Is this under a Guardianship contract?

This is the 3rd time she has posted complaining.

COVID has forever changed the way a lot of pounds and shelters were running with open doors and wandering members of the public. Appointments have become normal, and actually a more efficient way of managing staff duties such as feeding, cleaning pens and shuffling dogs into dry ones or grass runs.
-
Skimming the internet, I don't know why they use the term 'designer breed' unless it means something different over there. They name purebred dogs & cats of exaggerated features.
-
I can't believe I know this @Rebanne but a Nerd is a little lolly. Small compared to others, but way too big for bone chip size. I'd be picking them out too.

I'm not a vet so you'll need to call and check that you can use Chlorsig eye ointment and have a dry eye test - which is very quick and simple. Dry eye can have a conjunctivitis type look with excess thick discharge.

Sorry Luvapoo. What worry. Such awful little parasites. A few animals like cats and rabbits carry ear mites so exposure just needs to be hanging out in an infected sleeping spot or exploring in shrubs or direct contact. When an infected animal is sleeping, mites make their way out of the ears and along the body often reaching the bedding/grasses so I heard it's just like bird mites. Not actual direct contact but also mites leaving the host in search of a new one. (Happy to be corrected). It's been years since I've seen ear mites, I remember doing the drops and the cleaning. With bravecto on top I guess it will be a lot easier.

Thank you T there are rescues I can think of off the top of my head that really do have their act together. I'd guess none would call themselves 'perfect', once you think you are, you stop learning how to improve IMHO. (You'd remember. There was a book about foster care/rescue written by a Doler. + A written course run by an alternative registry which I didn't do for some reason.)

Parvo and leptospirosis seem to go through peaks. Especially this time of year. Rain, warmth, flies, rats. Best call is your vet to see if it's in your area right now or if they recommend waiting until the 2nd vacc. Popping in the car for a drive is a good idea too. There are raised seats that help them see out the windows. And training them to step into a harness is handy for the future. I don't walk pups for the same distance as mature dogs who have finished growing.

Ah yes. An interim carer. Handed dogs in the days PTS was on the dot. No backup, no quarantine. Often just nice women who couldn't say no. The one we found was also BYB amongst all the rest of the pound dogs.
