I don't know where you are at Esky but just wanted to add that if you are of an age where you intend to have kids then bare in mind that the Subaru's are atrocious for fitting car seats in to, we loved our Subaru but had to get rid of it and didn't get another for that reason.

Love my Outlander, does everything you want.

We are coming in to the warmer months, is there a lake or similar that you could take Daisy to and swim with her? If you can use a life jacket on her and take her out deep enough to get her feet just off the bottom that can be a great DIY hydrotherapy option. Apart from that if you want to keep Leroy I'd train the hell out of him, especially focusing on calming behaviours.

The girls have a spot in the corner of the loungeroom which at night has a puppy fence put across it, they would be more than capable of knocking down the fence and just walking out if they wanted to but they know it signals that they have to stay there.

Byford Animal Quarantine Facility-perth Wa

Don't forget though that they will only be in quarantine for possibly 1/3 of the time they used to be so visiting would be less of an issue for such a short time. -
It's A Burden Being Different...

Bassets aren't particularly common in the BYB circles here Cali so thankfully the ones I do meet seem to be well bred. Probably also explains why they aren't that common, it really is a matter of waiting for one from a breeder here and they run in at around the $1200-1500 mark so most people getting one are serious and not just looking for a cheap basset. -
I felt like I was watching one of those funniest home videos where the parent stands their filming their child eat dog poo or get injured for the sake of the video. Who in their right mind could stand there and video tape that and not step in to help that poor terrified dog.

I'd buy a smaller crate, use it for a little while and then sell it and get a bigger one. The cost of hire is not far off purchase cost anyway and that way you'll still get some use out of it for a while and get a chunk of your money back when you sell it to go to your bigger one.

Exactly what I was thinking Diva. the issues facing Finnish bassets would be much the same as those facing Aussie bassets I would think, although I think in general our Aussie bassets sport a little less of the excess skin, etc that seem to cause some of the overseas bassets some grief. Bassets are quite prone to problems if kept overweight and I'd wager a lot of those early deaths would be attributable to preventable health issues related to weight such as injuries and heart disease, etc., part of the reason I'm so anal about keeping my bassets on the lean side. I had Josie to the vet last week and the vet was absolutely thrilled with her condition and said how good it is to see a basset that's not carrying too much weight, hopefully it puts her in good stead for as long a healthy life as possible!

In the five years we've had Josie and excluding those belonging to breeders we've actively sought out we've only run in to one other. We've met a single fauve and a single griffon vendeen as well, so yes very uncommon here. I've lived in Melbourne and in the south coast of NSW and travelled up and down so we certainly don't keep to ousrselves either. -
Any Snake-bite 1st-aid For Dogs?
kelpiecuddles replied to dogmatic's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
the application of a pressure immobilization bandage adds a substantial amount of valuable time to allow you to get to help. As a bonus it also forces you to sit still for a minute or so to apply it, therefore giving yourself enough time to calm your nerves, think rationally about the best way to get out of where you are and who can help you. In the case of a dog where it is unlikely that the bite will occur on a limb the best course of action is to carry the dog if possible and to keep yourself and your dog calm. If possible call someone close by to bring their car to meet you. -
Another way to start a conversation about it could be to say, "You must be looking forward to breeding?" When she (of course) says yes you can reply "Gosh, I couldn't do it, I'd be so worried about my dog the whole time with all the things that go wrong, plus it's just so expensive ya know..."

I don't always Kazhak, but if we were to walk through a couple of hundred people like we did today for example I can honestly say that well over 100 of them would have been involved in a conversation with their friends about my dog. If I stopped to make small talk with every one of those people we would never get anywhere. At one stage my son needed to go to the toilet and I was trying to extract myself from a very persistent family LOL Maybe it's a factor of where I live too, lots of tourists so while there would be some regulars there are also a lot of people when we go places that would never have seen my dog before. -
In that case maybe the next time she mentions the pups health issues you could say something along the lines of "Hey, I've been thinking, do you think she'll be OK with a pregnancy with her breathing and stuff?" Let her join the dots herself, you'll get far further letting her draw her own conclusions and make the decision for herself than you will pressuring her.

I attended a caesarean once for a british bulldog, turned out she'd probably been in labour for quite a few days and the pups had died and were actually beginning to rot in her belly, it was revolting, they were lucky they took their bitch home after that. Maybe casually ask her if she's started saving yet? When she asks what for mention the necessary caesarean and the $60 a tin puppy milk, etc

Actually minimax I think you've hit the nail on the head there for where my feelings stem from, I'm quite an introverted person and the feeling of everyone staring at us really gives me the heebie jeebies LOL. -

Oh yes you'll definitely be quizzed then DDD! We are planning more bassets down the track and in the back of my mind I just keep thinking that if it's bad now imagine how much worse it will be when I have two or three in hand! I do agree with you cassie that it is nice to educate people about the breed, a lot of people think they are full of health problems so I explain why I chose my breeder and the benefits we have had of having no real health issues because I was so careful about what I wanted in my pup. I find a lot of people preconceptions about bassets come from the negative press of some of the overseas ones with masses of excess skin, they never realised it didn't have to be that way.
