  1. I use Frontline Plus for ticks but for Paralysis ticks you need to re-apply it every 14 days ( our vet recommended 12 days ) Vet recommended against Adavantix because we have a cat and we aren't able to keep them seperate for at least 24 hours after applying it to the dog ( poisenous to cat) Still check your pets x 2 a day , I make it a habit to run my hands over my dog many times a day , she's used to me poking around in her ears as well as toes and mouth , bum area etc . I have removed ticks by spraying Aeroguard on them and then pulling them off with tweezers making sure you get right in front of the head so it comes out completely , they leave a nasty crater wound . Then a vet check imo is a must , a dog migh not show symptoms but that can still happen for 48 hours AFTER the removal of the tick. and check yourself as well , they can attach to humans and make you very ill
  2. My Bella will wee/no2's on command , and she will nudge you with her nose if she needs to go outside it just happend to all fall in place when we trained her as a puppy, can I just add one thing that might be usefull dribble ? :p If you board your pets and they have been tought to relieve themselves on command , let the Kennel staff know ! My dog is boarded once a month , and for several months after we picked her up after her overninght stay she weeeeeeeeed the longest wee , we then realised she wouldn't have gone to relieve herself 1. because she was tought to go on grass and 2. wasn't given a command . Now the staff know and make her go before puppy playtime , otherwise she still forgets :p
  3. She may look and act like she's starving ;) but just go easy on the portions of food you give her till her stomach is back to normal . No good overfeeding her if she's still recovering or you may end up with the whole procedure again
  4. when feeding fruit , remove all seeds and pips , apple seeds are poisenous and only one small apple core made my ACD very ill with vomiting for hours needing vetenary treatment
  5. Sending you both hugs , I hope good news will come soon , you've both been through a lot (((((((hugs))))))))
  6. @ lillysmum , I take my hat off to anyone who can be a vegetarian , I've tried and failed
  7. Coming from a family who have been in the Butcher and Cattle industry for over 30 years , SD is often used as a preservative in mince , sausages etc , rarely should a butcher have a need to use it on plain meat/chops etc , if they are then shop elsewhere. lillysmum , meat by the time you buy it is actually quite old , the longer it hangs the more it matures and tender it gets. Meat that was killed 2 weeks ago and still hanging in the cool room will most certainly be nice and red and fresh and frankly the best you can buy.
  8. When you say , everytime you outside he gets dominant over the 4.5 year old female , do you mean that the female dog is indoors with you and this problem occurs when she goes outside with you ? Has the pup grown up with the female ? Have you had this problem for a long time or as the male matures ? Is the female desexed ? Does the male start the fight ? Could he be jealous ? Just let us know a bit more so that there is a clearer picture of how things are at your place , ie where do both dogs live and sleep , have you recently got the pup ? etc
  9. I've been using Heartguard Plus monthly for my dog , thinking it was the best ( advice from vet) and that daily tablets would be not only a hassle but that home brand heart tablets would be of lesser quality. wow , I didn't know that so many of you who obviously know way more about everything then I do because you have more experience would use daily tablets and/or home brand etc. I'm worried by the comments some of you have made about the monthly dose tablets , are they really that bad for your dog ? Am I doing wrong for my dog ? Is it ok to swap from monthly tabs to daily ? I sooo don't want to do the wrong thing for my dog and have basically always used what my vet said as gospell but I'm not so sure now.
  10. Dry - Supercoat 1 small cup & a selection off ; Chicken necks chuck steak -raw sardines rice vegies fruit left over cat food yoghurt low fat cheese oatmeal biscuit and 1/2 cup tea (no caffeine) when we have our evening coffee :D chicken frames , roo meat when it's available bones crabs when she catches her own about 60% of her diet is raw Rarely use canned food but if I do use it it's Natures Gift.
  11. FIngers crossed all goes well and she's better soon poor thing, and hugs to you ((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))
  12. I use Heart Guard Plus once a month as a prevention it also controls and treats Hookworm and Roundworm , Bella gets a bit of a loose motion after the tablet , but only slightly , no other side effects I can detect and she certainly doesn't mind taking it.
  13. My Bella loves it IT's a treat meal for her , maybe 1-2 a week. and while I know that cat's should not eat dog food , my 14 year old Himmy is thriving on having some added to his food , he loves the rice and corn bits and is finally putting on weight .
  14. I used to use Bonnie dry food for my ACD but found she was putting on too much weight , it's an excellent dry food for active dogs and you can get it in 30kg bags from Rural or stock suppliers etc. You can get Bonnie for working (very active dogs) normal weight control I'd say the working dog brand , which is what my dog had ,will keep the weight up , and it has no artificial stuff.
  15. Command words that require action ; Back up ( one of the first commands she learned) sit come stay wait a while ( she knows this is a long "sit" ) shake high five drop roll over crawl go get daddy/mummy ready ? get here now ! "wees now" on your bed get off the bed (ours) go sit quietly ( her day bed) get your bisquit ball ( treat ball) wait ( non eating command) followed by ok wait and sit ( followed by ok) bring my socks ( she refuses to bring my shoes ;) ) out of the water , now ! heel stay next to me and my danger word to her to alert her which is a dutch word , it's meant to have her come back to me and stay beside me , but "come NOW" works just as well. general words that she knows; leave the cat alone Banyo ( only ever used it once for the new dog up the road , now when you mention Banyo she's at the front door wagging her tail ) where's daddy ? where's the milk ? she'll go to the fridge ball , knows the difference between her 4 balls , get the blue , bouncy , tennis or sqeeky ball , most times she will bring the one you asked for TV dinner , cats dinner , meat , bisquit , lollies = all get the same drool reactions car , she will then go and get her harness , never say it in jest or she'll sulk for real walkies beach get a crab and plenty more like she knows peoples names etc , if you say "Bev is coming" she'll be at the door and she'll do zoomies and running on command , zoomies in the backyard , "go run" is for the beach . oh and not forgetting the endless stupid game of ball play at night , OH will say get your ball and then they will spend the next 2 hours throwing the ball up the hallway and back
  16. I know this would be really annoying and bad but I can't stop laughing here!!!!! :D He now complains he can't watch TV in peace , oohhhhh duhhhhhhh She doesn't do it to me though , we sit and watch TV together , smart doggie
  17. Perhaps before you bring him indoors , have a game outside so his energy is drained a little , then make this a pattern for play-indoors-relax training takes time and repetition so don't let him get away with anything you dont want him to do indoors. My ACD has unfortunately been allowed to play ball indoors where she and hubbie will throw the ball up the hallway x100 all night while he watches TV and the dog returns the ball to his lap. Funny to a point , but now she won't leave him alone , that ball gets spat into his lap time and time again. She wont do it to me , she lies beside my chair , nice and quiet . It's all in the training Having their own bed is ideal , they know to get out from under your feet , and it gives them their own space .
  18. :D I'm so sorry to hear she's gone now , RIP Brodie  Hugs to you Crysti_Lei
  19. Just had a thought (careful , I know ) Would a can of Pal not have been a cheaper enema ? Sorry
  20. Glad he's lighter and feeling better That bone cost about $350 per lb , figuring it may have weighed about 2 kilo's Whats he getting next Christmas ?
  21. Oh poor little mite , sending lots of healing thoughts her way. Sometimes puppies look much sicker then they are , one minute they are flat , a few hours later you wouln'd know they's been ill , lets hope that's all it is.
  22. My dog loves it , but I have to let her "Kill" the vacuum first , then she'll sit and let me vacuum her
  23. ;) Bella is totally focussed on the stick , her eyes won't leave it and she walks beside me until I throw it. I also find that just saying "do you want a stick ?" has her glued to my side , she watches my every move to see when I'm going to get that stick for her I've used "do you want a stick ?" for an emergency recall when I had to think fast and get her to come to me even faster , worked a charm yeah I'm just the person that bathes her , trains her , plays with her , feeds her 50% , yet DH who hasn't spend 1 minute training her gets total obedience
  24. A tree branch has lots of smells ;) I tried to get my dogs attention this morning while she had her head in a hole and bum up looking for a crab.......no way , didn't work. I call out "Bella dinner" instant attention just as well I had treats in my pocket !
  25. I agree , the key is to get the attention , then a recall.
