Oh yeah I also met the border collie who was in the butcher ads - where he stood up at the window. -
Dogs You Know/own In Ads
rastus_froggy replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I knew Reba, the "Bugger" dog I think that was for Toyota?, she was also in the ad when the GST was brought in, some St George ads and a few others (she has since crossed the bridge) her owner also owned Bindi who ended up playing most of the role of the dog in the movie Jessica after the assigned dog would not perform in certain situation. The same lady also ended up owning a dog called Jordan (originally her sons dog) and he had a brief role in the movie the Oyster Farmer. Other than my own dogs Jordan is my favourite dog in the WHOLE world despite being a cross breed he is stunning I also know Pav the Hyundai dog. ETA My dad and his dogs use to appear in ads both on tv and in mags and papers for Suzuki farm bikes, they ran up and both jumped on the bike behind him. -
I believe they do come back. While I was on holidays at Christmas I walked through a park in Hobart dedicated to the service dogs from all the wars Australia has been involved with. There was a lot of info there on these dogs and their handlers. It was really beautiful.

What Would You Do If Your Dog Was Sick
rastus_froggy replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was in this situation a few years ago, my little dog had temps of 42+ was losing weight at a rapid speed (she went from 7.5kg down to 5.2), she would not eat or drink, after a week at the vets on the drip she came ggod. They did every test they thought could shed light on her condition but came up with nothing then she just got better. I was not in a good financial postion back then but was lucky enough to get the limit on my credit card upped. Now 2 years on she is right now back there with the same issues, they are trying their best and conducting more tests now that might help them find her problems. If I need to the credit card will be extended again, I would rather owe the money to the bank than the vets. Can't wait to be able to bring her home, I miss Stimpy. -
It's Cold! Coats When Home Alone?
rastus_froggy replied to natamalie's topic in General Dog Discussion
One only wears a coat if it is super cold (like in the minuses) as she doesn't usually like it on. One wont wear one at all and the other wears a thin jumper in the days and a thicker one at nights. But they all have very well built fully insulated kennels (insulation in the walls floor and roof) sometimes I go get in their kennels just to make sure it is warm in there . They also have LOTS of blankets which they generally pull out of the kennel into a nice sunny spot on winter days to lay on. -
$2 at any supermarket or fruit shop - a coconut!! my dogs love them, they do break them after a while then they eat the insides. Sometimes if we get a big one we have to take it off our staffy X boy as it drives him crazy beacuse he can't pick it up, so he pushes it around the yard yelping, barking and crying at it, I don't think the neighbours would like his noise My guys also get all the old balls from work, everything from tennis balls to basketballs and footballs.

I have one worm farm dedicated to the dog poo, it is just an old wheelie bin with worms and dog poo in it, the worms thrive on it. I have been told though that you need to be careful what you use the decomposed matter on, eg not vegi gardens, something to do with the ecoli in it I think it was.

I don't actually have a favourite breed yet and may never have one. I generally fall for a dogs personality, currently we have 3 staffy X's which was not deliberate at all, I have owned kelpies, borders, a rotty, and a rotty X ridgeback in the past. I think I will just continue to fall for the nature and habits of a dog over breed, which in some ways makes it hard to choose a puppy as they haven't developed their ways, I know if I get one I can help to shape it but if it doesn't happen I am sure the older dogs I fall for will not be complaining

I gave up on traps as I couldn't stand it when the mouse didn't get snapped on properly and would end up running around with a trap attached! So I bought this one and they get into it to eat the food but then cant get out, and then it all gets dropped into a bucket of water. I got it at a stock feed shop.

Beautiful tribute to a beautiful boy. He sounds a lot like my rotty who I was so fortunate enough to have until he was nearly 13. There were days when I thought maybe it was his time but he just kept on keeping on, then one night he passed in his sleep. He was my perfect dog, such a gentle boy and for this reason I will never own another rotty - no dog could ever be to me what he was, if I did get another I think I would just expect the same and chances are I would be dissapointed. It has just gone 5 years since I lost ICE and he is never far from my thoughts. Precious memories last forever.

Thanks for that, I have not been able to get hold of any Manuka Honey as yet, so I have just been keeping her warm and giving her some regular honey straight from the hive. She has been coughing for five days now (it started 4 days after we were with a large group of dogs), I called the vet on day one of her coughing and the receptionist said that I should bring her in straight away and they would put her on antibiotics, but after reading stuff on here I decided to wait and see how it panned out. I will give her a couple more days, it is becoming a little less but she still coughs when she moves around, all training has stopped totally as it was distressing her too much. ETA It is frustrating as she is vaccinated, I can only think that it would have been much worse had she not been. Also the other 2 dogs have not shown any sign of coughing at all but I am keeping them all quarentined.

I have read the other topics on kennel cough but cant seem to find the answer, about how long does the cough generally last?

It sounds like a great idea and I am sure Jed would love it! Have no idea how to quilt though .

If I got home, my dog was gone and I had a note on my door telling me to call the ranger, that is exactly what I would do that instant! I would not care if it were midnight, I would call the rangers after hours number and find out what was going on. Yes they should have finished the pen (months ago) and he would never have been taken AND yes he was mistakenly PTS, somehow a mistake was made yes it is VERY sad but mistakes are made, people are only human, no it doesn't lessen the pain the owners are feeling. Everyone makes mistakes, they happen all the time it is only the severity that differs.

Things That You Used To Do That You Now Don't
rastus_froggy replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Using the word stay, I just don't do it anymore because if I ask my dog for a sit then that is what I expect, until I ask for something else. I know there is the flip side there where people want to give their dog as much info/help as they can but this is my new method and it works for me. -
You have to give credit where credit is due Also a huge thanks to MDBApacers as well, everyone is doing such a great job in this very unfortunate situation.

If You Had To Pick Ten Breeds...
rastus_froggy replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
One of those primitive spitzes if I'm not mistaken. Looks a bit like a Basenji x Akita...quite attractive. Definately a dream dog, don't think I will ever be licky enough to own one Some info on them here http://www.heydogs.com/breeds/t/telomian.html -

Ask LOTS of questions - EVEN IF YOU THINK THEY ARE REDICULOUS. Straight out ask them if the dog has ever seen/been around or even attacked stock before. Believe me these types of questions WILL be on my list of things to ask next time I get a rescue dog, as they may not tell you these things and believe me you are better off knowing up front. Yes you would think a resuce would tell you, but not always. Even if they are well known and recommended STILL ask these questions. You are far better off knowing these types of thing up front rather than it all ending badly.

Have seen this before but even though I and a lot of people come here regularly it does not mean that this sort of stuff is always at the front of our minds, it definately reiterates (sp?) the issues. Get the general public - the people who let their dogs run free and fall pregnant to the dog down the road or those who have "accidental matings" to watch this by posting the clip to everyone in your address book and asking them to forward it onto their friends. I think it is good that this has been posted here - we as dog lovers - have a responsibility to share it.

I find myself falling easily for tan (or predominantly tan) dogs, doesn't seem to matter the breed, but personality ultimately over rides colour for me.

Another here. This thread is the first time I have written about my boy being PTS (and it has been just over a year). It was the hardest thing I have ever done and I am only just now beginning to be able to talk about it. There are very few people in my real world who even know that I had him PTS as I just can't talk about it. When they ask how my dogs are I say fine thanks and don't go into individual detail. Another point on the whole trusting your vet thing, I said before that I trusted my vets judgement in how it was done and I feel that there is a mutual trust there with my vet as when I took my 100% healthy boy in, there were NO questions asked, they just did what I requested. On the cost issue, I would never want to know the monitary (sp?) cost of taking my pets life. But that is just my opinion. ;) to everyone who has ever had to go through having an animal PTS.

Until now I had no idea that there were options, this has really been informative reading. I did not ask any questions when I had my boy done and I am a responsible owner, I trusted my vet whole heartedly as I was in no state to be asking questions. I could not even walk into the surgery to pay the bill and I asked them not to send me a bill I would just send them a cheque for an amount that I was pretty sure would cover it and they were not to send me a reciept. I could not bring myself to ever even know how much it cost. Also my problem!! Shyla gets worried if I get a little upset at something, but if she saw me bawling and crying uncontrollably she would be very nervous and apprehensive herself.. I wouldn't want her last moments being like that Edited to add: How often do dogs pass on their own? It seems more often than not people are having to euth to save their suffering and pain, so I wonder if many pass in their sleep or on their own? Just out of interest. My first dog ICE (Rotty) passed in his sleep at nearly 13 years old. And our family dog, Pinnacle a border collie X kelpie, from when I was a kid passes in his sleep at 17, I walked out and found him in the shed one morning poor old thing.
