What Shampoo Will Make My Dog Smell Delicious?
Clyde replied to Sally's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use the Aloveen Leave In Conditioner in between washes as a 'freshener'. I know groomers who dilute it in a spray bottle for this purpose aswell. I used to use the Bio Groom deodorisers for clients dogs, but found that it only really lasted a couple of hours. I think I am going to have to break from my Aloveen obsession and try the Plush Puppy products soon as they also get highly rated on this site. -

Aloveen fan here. Be careful of the cheap stuff (such as Exelpet) most of them have soap which will strip any top spots from your dog, plus off course over dry pups skin causing itchiness etc. -
Dr Rosalie Mathews sees an enormous amount of Westies as she has an interested in Derm. she's built a great reputation amongst Sydneys Westie owners. She is at Gladesville Vets 9817 5758 and is absolutely fantastic (just in case you are seeking further vet advise).
-
Admittedly know nothing about Westies, however I groom a couple of them. I only see them twice a year and that is the only baths they have and their skin is great. Both owners were informed by their breeders to only wash dog every six months...... are you bathing him a lot. Is the Malaseb staying on for ten minutes? I'm a huge fan of Malaseb but understand that it could be a bit harsh for a Westie - I would take him to a vet who has an interest in Dermatology and nip this in the bud. Are you in Sydney?

Proctor and Gamble own Eukanuba, not Science Diet. Eukanuba is a great food, don't always believe what you hear from PETA. I feed my four on Euk. and they all do really well.
-
If there is an infection present then use the Pyohex, however if it is simply yeasty skin then use the Malaseb. Pyohex has a higher level of Chlorhexedine for cleansing any pus/sores. Malaseb is not being discontinued. Make sure you leave the shampoo on for ten minutes as it doesnt start acting until about 7 minutes. In cases like this it needs to be done three times a week. In between these baths I'd use Aloveen Leave in Conditioner (same company) and for other baths I'd use the Aloveen Shampoo. I would personally avoid any tea tree products - they over dry the skin/coat and can cause severe itchiness. Tea tree is actually toxic to dogs in higher doses. Seriously if you stick to those Dermcare products rather than chopping and changing you will notice a vast improvement within a couple of weeks if done correctly. Good luck!

I clip oodles of Border Collies, GSD's, Golden's, Labs etc... even a few Rotties. I usually advise owners first of the drawbacks, if they haven't done it before, but they are all adamant to have it done. I believe that it does ruin most dogs coats, however I have had a few where it hasn't made a difference. I've recently started clipping Victoria, not only is she alot more comfortable she has a new lease of life/energy. I also clip using #10,#15 for lots of Borders (#15 for Vic.) - I don't give the dogs clipper burn nor do they get any infections etc. Most of the dogs come from local acreage where ticks are a serious problem - no matter how often you check.

Shampoo For Getting Out Grease And Oil
Clyde replied to 4 Paws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Aswell as the other suggested cleansers I would rub through some Aloveen Leave In conditioner after his wash. Aside from helping to replenish his skin after all the stripping from his scrub, the Aloveen creates a protective barrier and stops the dirt/grease sticking to their coat so much...making it easier for next wash. Makes for a good deoderiser too. -
Maltese - wash&dry $45 tidy up $55 Full clip $65 Poodle - Clip $65 Beagle - wash&dry $30 Pug - wash&dry $30 Staffy - wash&dry $30 Lab - wash&dry $40 Cockerspaniel - $wash&dry $45 $tidy up $55-65 Rottweiler- wash&dry $ 40 Husky/Malamute wash&dry $50-70 Saint Bernard - wash&dry$ 50-70 I don't have a set price list as such, but they are usually within these ranges. Pensioners also get work done cheaper, plus my regulars (weekly) get charged a little less too. If the dog is beautifully behaved then I usually knock off a few $ aswell.

Try another food, either do a search on here about BARF - or perhaps Eukanuba, IAMS, Royal Canin, etc.... Pal is probably the worst stuff you can give them. I would also try a very mild, soap free shampoo such as Aloveen made by Dermcare (you can also do a forum search on Aloveen to see the benefits of this shampoo and also leave in conditioner). It is a soothing shampoo which also moisturises the skin. Are you certain he doesn't have fleas? What prevention are you using? I would still check the garden and see what plants you have... do a google on which plants are poisonous to dogs so you can see the photos for a comparison.

Personally, I don't think you can go past a Cavalier Spaniel when it comes to a sweet, gentle, family dog.

Where I used to work I would get all of the above, but where I am living now they are all the nicest little dogs with great owners. Maybe because alot of the owners are horse people and they are more realistic?? Alot of the fluffies are on acreage with paralysis ticks so the owners are happy for the dogs to be clipped right back. I actually miss doing fancy clips/scissors. In saying that though I dont put up with biters anymore and explain to the owner that their dog and I have had a "personality clash" and recommend they go elsewhere next time. I know that I am super lucky, I love all my clients dogs now and their owners are just as great.

I've just finished off a bag of the Eagle Pack and wasn't overly impressed........... I've been sent some Nutro samples (Thank you! ), the dogs liked it, so off to buy a bag soon!

Karen, I've only just seen this thread. I can't convey how sorry I am for the loss of Wags. He was one of the most delightful dogs I have ever known, truly. I know how much you and your family will miss him. You certainly tried everything you could and I'm sure he knows that. Please give Jack an ear scratch from me ;)

So sorry Jacq and Sean, I know how much you both loved her

Anyone Know Of A Good Dog Groomer
Clyde replied to collie angel's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If I were you, I would invest in a force dryer! It will save you money long term, rather than using groomers. This gets all the coat out and fluffs them up beautifully. -
What was it?

I would steer clear of putting sorbolene on a hot spot. The idea is to dry a hot spot out, sorbolene traps sweat against the skin. The vet will probably recommend Malaseb shampoo, or Pyohex if it's infected. Both work a treat IMO as they are made specifically to treat the problem by a veterinary dermatologist. If you do a DOL search on hotspots you will find a wealth of information about them.

Yeh, and they chain smoke indoors all day long so that whenever you buy anything there it stinks of stale nicotene A real shame as they sell some great stuff - I know so many people who boycott Mondo Cane due to the smoking...... I wouldnt have thought it would even be legal?? -
Tests done by Bayer show that Advantix is slightly more effective on fleas than Advantage, however some customers are claiming it's the other way around. If it's not working, why not switch back to Frontline if that worked?

Try adding Pineapple in his diet - apparently it makes the faeces taste like sh!t.
