I know of a lot of groomers who sell individual top spots. Advantage used to say wait 24 hours but a quick look the other day and I couldnt see it written, yet the ingredients havent changed so not sure whay that's changed (unless I missed it). Definitely tell owner to bomb house, also at the same time use a fresh vaccuum bag and also treat their car!!! Bedding etc. I agree it's very frustrating. I get so tired of writing info down for clients re flea control and nothing ever gets done.

Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit

You're being a bit harsh. Even if you like to think of yourself as an upfront type of person, there's no need to be rude in this instance when putting your opinion across. -
I hope you don't double dip

That's exactly what I use at work to clean ears. Great stuff and also fab if there is any yeast present too. I pre make a bottle each fortnight and off we go. I've had so may clients dogs cease to have ear infections/problems since using this as a regular cleaner a few years back.

Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit

Tire him out that day, walks etc.... tell your vet just to get stuck in to the ear check straight away.... I find it bizarre that he doesn't know how to keep a dog calm in consult. Try to avoid the sedative, play with his ears as much as possible before your next visit. Best to try to get on top of it before it becomes an ongoing issue (which ear problems often are). Good luck! BTW - If you do suspect your vet of trying to skint your pockets then perhaps find another one? -
Ok sorry. Medicated is actually better off applied directly, I was talking about store bought ear cleaner. But..... if using the wiping method gets just a little in, rather than none it might be better? In all honesty I would sit on her (almost) to get that medicated stuff in.... usually as soon as you start massaging it all around they are putty in your hands and moaning happy sounds. Try just playing with her ears without trying to do anything. Rub your hand behind her ear and massage, she should love it. Build it up to putting the med. stuff in... best to have a helper. Squirt that med. stuff in then oh so quickly massage!

I'm personally not a fan of putting anything directly in to a dogs ear canal. I also don't like the feel of drops in my ear. Have you tried wetting a cotton ball with the ear cleaning solution and wiping it out with that? Alot less dramatic for them, this is how I clean clients dogs ears and all my own pets ears. I know a lot of bottles say to apply directly but I believe it's a terrible idea. You could also try putting her up on a table/bench so she can't actually get away and let her lick peanut butter or similar from a Kong while you're wiping them out. I know how frustrating it can be, my Rotti runs a mile as soon as I pull out his fortnightly top spot

Hi Sally, my little Maltese cross has the same thing. And so do a lot of little Malts I groom. I wouldnt worry too much about it, it could just be a pigment change as they mature... hormones after desexing perhaps etc. Although certainly mention it to your vet but it is quite common.

It depends on what you want done, and of course the breed. I would never do just a hydrobath... all my dogs get dried properly.

It depends on your set up I groom a lot of old athritic dogs and having a front opening has not ever been an issue. -

I've got a twin tank autofill Conmurra. I've had it for years and never a problem. If I were you though, I would just go a single tank and then use your own warm water hose for rinsing. I find with large longer haired dogs my spare tank is still not enough water warmed for final rinse... although I admit I rinse until the dogs coat is more than squeaking Cant stand the thought of residue being left. -
Aren't you a vet nurse? Is your work not using the new vaccines yet? (3 yearly)

Some grow out of it, some don't ;) From my experience about 75% do. I sympathise, as I have a lot of little clients younger dogs here who dribble everywhere when their owners turn up. Also a good idea to check that she hasn't an infection. If she is not desexed it could possibly be a little infection. Check that she hasn't any discharge coming from her vulva or sticking to the surrounding hairs.

I don't ever have rough JRT's in to groom, just baths for smooths. Anyway a guy called me yesterday to book his dog in for a clip. Turns out it's a rough coat (wire? not sure what you call it) JRT. So I sent him home and told him I'd look in to an alternative as I wasn't keen on clipping him. 10 month old pup, owner is worried he's suffering in the heat. Dog has indoor access when owner at work so I doubt he is suffering any more than the rest of us. Owner is also concerned about ticks but Ive recommended good prevention. He is really keen to clip him, but Ive said Ill find out how the coat will grow back.??? Is there anywhere around Northern Beaches who do stripping? How much could he expect to pay? What sort of grooming utensil would thin the dogs coat if he chose to not clip or have stripped? Thanks in advance

Has anyone tried both? (Furm. and Coat King). If so which did you prefer? I have a Coat King, I'm just curious...........

Bleach is a corrosive and can burn human skin so I'd hate to think what it could do to dog skin which is so much thinner than ours. I've heard a few people praise peroxide for hot spots, personally I just always have Malaseb on hand.

Egg shells are also meant to help combat acne.

Back in my day of nursing we always did them seperately due to the anaesthetic. Most people get the sutures taken out at the vet and the vaccination can be done then if not prior to desexing. ETA: Although I know of a lot of vets who will do everything in one hit (particularly vets doing rescue dogs), but my own vet won't and I choose to do seperately as well.

:D Not much going on in Dog Tricks. I just realised this thread is about 7 months old.......it was only a few threads down from the top ;)

Care to share the help Smithies Rule? I'm wanting to teach this to George. :D I like it when they pray in a sitting position rather than on their back legs IYKWIM. Sit, and front legs up.

I'd definitely stop with the baby wipes. You could shampoo his face with a little Malaseb due to the pus but otherwise I would just leave it or wipe with a clean, damp towel. The Malaseb would be akin to clearasil for dogs... antibacterial. Make sure it stays on for ten minutes though.

I had a Rotti foster who would do this and although I've heard it's the norm with dominance there is no way he was a dominant boy. He was very nervous and would only pee on me when he was unsure - crowds, storm brewing etc.

I clip loads of Borders, Goldens, GSD's even some Labs, Shelties and Huskies. I have only witnessed one coat grow back thicker and drier (Border) out of all of these breeds. The rest have been fine.

Please don't leave a dog in a crate unsupervised unless they have been crate trained.
