Stomach Problems

Recommended Posts

a friend was telling my today about all the problems she is having with her 3yo Frenchie. Neither she, nor her vet, can work out the problem.

what ever he eats, he throws up. some foods he can keep down better then others, and has only just been put on a locally made brand 'natural slect' or something, and it is the first thing he has ever not thrown up. they even have to ration his water, because if he drinks too much he with throw up.

he has been on all kinds of elimination diets and nothing ever seems to be a common demnoninater, and when it is water as well causeing it, it sounds like a really tricky issue.

has anyone ever heard of this??

(i may not answer the threads as i don't have internet acsess for the next few days, but tonight and when i get back online, i will be eagerly returning here to see answers)

Doesn't sound too good  Poor Frenchie. Has it happened all his life? Is he incredibly skinny then? Hope your friend can find an answer for him CL.

yeah, aparently he had gotten into a pretty bad way.

and as far as i know it has been all his life.

It's quite possible he has a hiatus hernia causing a lax oesphageal sphincter........ would need a gastroscopy to diagnose this - some vets have their own scopes (usually old hospital equipment)

I heard a very similar story the other day about the same sort of dog.He wasn't putting on any weight as a puppy and throwing up.

He had a HUGE hiatus hernia. Had to have an operation and was cut right up the middle but is going OK now. He had x rays, ultrasound etc He went to a specialist centre

Maybe post in the French Bulldog thread as there are breeders in there who may be able to help. Certainly get tests done but in the meantime, try a teaspoon of Slippery Elm powder in their food once a day - it may help keep something down. But a trip to the vet is the way to go.

I know a Dane who had this as a puppy but was diagnosed very quickly, in his case I don't think he would have reached adulthood without diagnosis.

I can't remember the correct term for it but it's where this is a pocket or something like that in the throat and not much food can pass through and it just gets held in this pocket and they end up throwing it up.

Frenchie problem

PM Mjosa on DOL, she is a Frenchie breeder and will know what is going on

I had a Frenchie who has a similar problem

She has a stomach operation to fix it, I would have to dig out vet notes to tell you exactly what was done, but it is common in the breed apparently

wow, thanky you, everyone. i will pass all this info in to my friend and hopeully she can start getting some really answers for her little frenchie.

at the very least, if she can take this info to her vet, they might want to look a little differently rather then just give the boy a vitamin shot which she said that that always want to do.

The vitamins are a neccessity, if he is not retaining/digesting food- but they are certainly not helping a diagnosis

*fingers crossed*
