Petplan Animal Insurance

About eight months ago, I took out pet insurance for my three dogs through Petplan, but have had continuous problems with their administration and the lack of communication from this business. They had firstly put one of my dogs on the wrong coverage. After several emails, it was eventually corrected. I then asked for a new certificate to be sent, and well months later, I hadnt received anything in the mail, so I made a phone call and the response was that they didn't know why it didn't get to me. Instead of receiving an original, I got an email with an attachment.

About 2 months ago, I contacted them to advise that I had leased a dog, and did not require cover for this particular dog now. I am paying monthly, and you guessed it, the direct debit is still coming out of my account. I emailed them to advise of this and to let me know when the direct debit has been cancelled. Still waiting for confirmation that this has been done. It will be intersting if in the next week whether I have another payment taken from my account. There has been no refund of these payments to date.

Has anyone had problems with Petplan. Is there a better option for me?

Other than the fact that all of my initial 3 claims (which I submitted at the one time) were denied but (after I applied for review) were subsequently approved (it took a while, but it did come through) I don't recall having had any difficulties on the administrative side of things.

I have insurance through RSPCA, and have claimed heaps..No Problems... one of my dogs has even reached a limit this year.

Ring you bank and cancel the Direct debit and also complain to your bank if you do not get any refunds due to you.

Good Luck

funnily enough, there was a bit of a chat in lab forum re PP today --- claims taking FOREVER to be paid.

I have insurance with them and I actually just realised - I have never received any paperwork at all, of course they take my direct debit out.

Good reminder to follow up, I hope you can sort the issues MD.

Can I ask why Erny?

I have my horse with them and when I got my certificate they had put a blanket exclusion on the policy for any claims arising from lameness. I rang them and they were fantastic - said to email them some info about his previous injury and within 20 minutes they had emailed back confirming they were removing the exclusion.

I've not made any claims as yet so would be interested in what their claims service is like...

I have had a claim in with PP for two months now. Spoke to them the other day and they said it would be fixed that afternoon but still no refund into my bank. I was told when sending in the claim to send in the full vet records as well. I did this and last month had a letter from them stating the records were incomplete as there was a gap. How they work that out is beyond me and I have assured them the dog has never been to another vet. Oh well will be ringing them again next week.

I tried the breeders one as i wanted to send puppies with the 6 weeks insurance, got all the breeder numbers etc after a week or so,then i emailed them with the number of pups i needed it for and still havent heard anything-pups went nearly a month ago

So i will look at a different company.

I don't know if perhaps it was because each separate 'issue' seemed to be somehow connected to each other and there were cross over dates and visits to different Vets/specialists. On top of that, no clear diagnosis??? Maybe that had them checking into it and perhaps doubting it? One of the reasons was just a misunderstanding of a date. I can see from the way the Vet report printed where this might have been possible. I don't think I have cause to complain now. As I mentioned, whilst it went through review and took a while, it has all been sorted and paid. I have another to put through and I'm hoping that it will be less confusing now because it will simply be one bill/one claim.

Apparently they implemented a new system in July and it has issues and there is a big backlog. It took almost three weeks for my claim to be logged into the system after they had received it. Also, I was told they aren't paying money direct into bank accounts and you will get a cheque instead.

Other than the very long wait, they have processed things and I got my claim paid out - $3700 - without any complications (and I used two vets back and forth).

If you make a claim for the first time, make sure your vet attaches a COMPLETE history of the dog (not only the incident) and then your claim should proceed more quickly once it is logged.

I highly doubt that you will get any refund. The way pet insurance in Australia works is that it is an annual policy whereby the annual premium is made monthly (to make it more 'saleable'). If you cancel the policy during the policy year then you have to continue to pay until the end of the policy year (unless you have not claimed at all then there may be a pro rata refund but do not quote me on that).

This is the case even if your dog dies - you still need to pay out the policy year.

I have my 3 with this company and they have gone from taking 1 payment out for all 3 to making 3 separate ones a months. Renewal come in and besides the fact they got the name of 2 of the dogs incorrect my payments have gone from 107 a month to 127 a month...20% increase and tht is with a discount for have 3 animals insured. Am looking around for other alternatives myself.

I was just about to say the same thing, I used to work in insurance and if its a 12 month policy you wont be able to cancel it

Made my first claim end of November with Petplan, i sent an email this week and they said I should get my refund in the next 2 weeks, they are in for a surprise as I have just sent another claim off today as my pup was sick this week.

I had a different experience with the RSPCA insurance. When my dog died, I cancelled the policy and they refunded the premium for the part of the year not used (7 months).

I had paid the policy in full at the beginning of the year, made one small claim and they refunded in July after my dog died in June. They even sent a lovely letter expressing their condolences, although I'm sure it was a standard letter but was still appreciated.

I have had PP insurance for two years with no problem (or claims - thankfully). The renewal is coming up this month and it would be reassuring to know that they have got their act together 'cos I pay for peace of mind.
