That's really weird my dogs' op was $5k that included specialist imaging, specialist (major) surgery, 3 days 24hr monitoring as well as a few more days basic hospital care and all meds. I'd be looking at the bill too, by the sounds of the injury that seems pretty excessive even for emergency vets. ETA GM my response is because IME people have been known to exaggerate bills to get sympathy or in this case perhaps reimbursement, I think if RL01 is considering contributing to the bill he should make sure that the cost is correct. We don't know if the bones were shattered or split or whatever. If the dog needed to stay in one of the really good Brisbane vet Hospitals (not vet clinics), and needed orthopaedic surgery, then the bill could easily be that high. To hear people carry on about the bill is making me feel quite ill. If my dogs was that severely injured I wouldn't just take him to a clinic, I would take him to a vet hospital, and I would expect to pay thousands. I would expect more people here to be like that too. If people are shocked by that figure, maybe they should get health insurance for their dog. Because the alternative might be to take your dog to a cheap unstaffed clinic where it could fade quickly and die in the middle of the night. But hey, they would only charge about $500, is that what people want for their dogs? I'm shocked by the figure compared to my bill...with a specialist...for a much larger dog...for a much more complicated surgery...with much longer care. What a bad owner I am! Someone call the RSPCA! I would think about purchasing a crate and bed (and maybe some toys) for puppy to recuperate in at home and maybe a bunnings gift voucher and offer to lend a hand when they are fixing the fence. I also like the suggestion someone gave about passing on details of other animal health people who you can recommend if you know of any. Money isn't the problem... but just seeing $4000 for a bill at one hit, it's just shocking Charlie went to a vet hospital. it wasn't cheap. i had no problem paying for it. it turned out a lot cheaper then i thought though. Around $5k. She didn't blink, he was her boy. People actually told her she was mad and to put him to sleep as she'd only had him a month. I would go into hock for my dog, seriously I can't think of a figure too high if quality of life was sustained. Personally I pay $35 a month (I don't even miss it coming out of my pay) to insure Timmy. I'd hate to worry about the cost. With the fortnightly x-rays and the cast changes at least once a week from 9 weeks to 5 months, then the weekly appointments to check the open sores and the muscle development, plus the antibiotics and pain mdication... not cheap! My husband and I continually fill in with bricks and dirt, have put a second wooden barrier along, the neignbours have never done a thing to stop there dog. I cant see how it would be my fault and how this could be your fault. I was thinking perhaps you could offer to pay the first three months of puppy insurance telling them that if they had taken this out they would not have to worry about a large bill again .Otherwise the most I think you should pay was the excess on a typical policy because if they had taken insurance this would be all they had to pay.I would prefer to pay for some insurance for them as it would would give the appearance of being just a goodwill gesture. Why would you be a bad owner if you are unaware of the possible costs of intensive care hospitalisation and orthopedic surgery in certain Vet Hospitals on the north side of Brisbane? Anyway, it is beside the point. The OP does not need to see the vet bill, and should not ask to see it. A token "Hope your dog is ok" gift, and an offer to help fix fence or whatever is the right thing to do. It is important that the OP does not do anything hinting of admitting liability. Becky Thatcher, your 'opinion' is unwelcome because a) OP needs to know their legal rights not your 'opinion', and b) if the OP were to say anything or act based on your 'opinion' they could be up for at least $4000 for something they are not responsible for.
