Labrador Breeders

Just to clarify, I have no problem with breeders who charge more for superior/imported lines, or have a preference for type (including colour). Only with those that breed for colour alone and then charge an obscene amount for the pups.

Breeding for colour is fine so long as your are not breeding for colour at the cost of health, temperament or conformation.

Exactly ;)

If the breeder you are looking at is well regarded and happen to specialise in the colour you want then go for it. Just be sure that they are breeding for the whole package

Thank you so much for all your responses guys, they have been sooo helpful, I think I will do a bit more looking around at breeders that breed more than just chocolates and I will also contact a few in person (over the phone) to get an idea of what they are like.

Thank you again! ;)

For this breed Alfie, I'd be interested in a breeder who puts titles on the front end (show) or back end (performance) of their dog's name. With such a capable breed, there are breeders around who do both!

If you have a particular purpose or sport in mind for your dog, then a breeder with dogs with runs on the board for that is also a good bet. There are breeders who produce chocolate pups who tick all those boxes.

I presume you live in NSW so i would suggest you go to the Lab National show being held in NSW on the 8/9 may.

There will be labs from all over australia there & the entry will be one of the biggest you will so.

If you can get a choco with Ch and RRD scattered around both sides of the pedigree for less than $1800 you're doing very well. I generally find choco litters are sold out before they are born if I bother to list on DOL. Nothing wrong with going to the National . . . but the demand for chocos is so strong that you'll find lots of competition to get a pup.

Note, my girls tend to have 10 pups. I tend to get a few calls a day when I list an upcoming litter, even if/when I list the price at $1500 for a choco. In part this is regional. But if you want a good choco pup from one of the breeders who doesn't discriminate by colour, expect to spend some time on a wait list.

I don't know why puppy buyers care so much about colour, but they do. And a lot of people are on the wait for chocos.

I breed all three colours on occasions, my yellows and blacks are equal quality to my chocolates, I charge the same price for puppies of each colour and it is no where near the prices being quoted in this thread. My dogs do not have titles on both ends of their pedigree name, but certainly have titles at the beginning, they would be quite capable of attaining working titles if anyone wished to compete in any of the working persuits....

Quality is the name of the game, just because a dog is imported does not mean that it is any better than dogs bred in Australia, sometimes as with everything the quality is not as good......

Look around, talk to breeders see what is out there.....

This is a public forum so I feel people with ethics should not say anything bad about any breeder.....

Chocolate "mania" has meant that there are a lot of people out there breeding for the colour and not necessarily for quality....

Go to the Lab National if you can, see which breeders are represented there, I am sure that most breeders are only too happy to talk about their dogs.

Incidentally I pay no more for stud fees for quality chocolate dogs than I do for quality blacks and yellows and often use AI: no reason why a chocolate litter should cost any more to produce than any other colour.....

incorrect. The breed standard puts liver and chocolate on the same line as alternative names for the same colour. I don't like 'liver' cause I never know whether it's supposed to be a rich bloody colour like raw liver or a grey colour like a Wiemerarner.

I wonder if they were called "brown labs" if they would be so popular

They're technically Liver - I guess that'd be enough to put most people off :)

Catraz Kennels, Rikim Kennels, Blackrange Kennels (all these kennels have chocolates but do not breed for colour! Althought they all love a lovely Choc!)

This is Pams newest star which is making judges sit up and look again at a Choc lab in the ring, hes a devine boy!

$1800 is a rediculous price for a Lab!!

Sorry sandgrubber - what about what I have said is ''incorrect'' - the ''chocolate'' in Labradors is the same gene that is called ''liver'' in other breeds.

Perhaps I'm wrong in believing that people who buy for colour would like owning a liver dog even more than a chocolate one - but I don't think so

Thanks for all continued responses :grouphug: .

I just want to clarify for everyone that I am not wanting to get a chocolate labrador just for the colour. I love the labs temperament, their appearance and their exercise requirements fit my life style perfectly. If I was to go to a breeder that had all colours of labs and found that the puppy that would suit me was black or yellow I would be more than happy to take that puppy into my family, as temperament and suitablility is far more important to me than colour.

On saying this, if I were to say my favorite colour of lab was black, no one would mind, so I wouldnt really judge people because their favorute colour may be the same as many other people.

However, I do agree that there has been a very big popularity surge in chocolate labs and that irresponisble breeders are over breeding this colour with not much consideration for temperament.

I in no way mean this post to be insulting or anything, I really appreaciate all the comments from, everyone :grouphug:

Hi Alfie - here is my 2c worth -

Being a labrador fanatic, a serious exhibitor of labradors and without opening myself to legal ramifications, I will not comment the breeders you have stated in your original post.

I would strongly reccommend the following labrador breeders:

Driftway - NSW (though I doubt will have any chocs at present)

Wilhelm Chang - Labraddell prefix in QLD

Chanpema - South Australia

Gunnislake - NSW

I am sure there are other reputable breeders of chocs out there, but can personally vouch for the above breeders. I also strongly agree with all other posts - $1800 is way too much to pay for a labrador puppy - regardless of imported lines. Chocolate puppies should not cost more than yellows or blacks.

Please be persistant and patient - your purchase of a quality labrador puppy will be well worth the wait :grouphug:

Thank you for the suggestions of breeders, that is sooo helpful!!! I am not intending to get a puppy untill the later half of this year as I want to be really prepared, so I am willing to wait as long as it takes for the perfect puppy to come up for me :grouphug:

One question about chocolates while we are discussing them, are they meant to have pink rims around their eyes and pink on the inside of lips??

None of mine do!! I believe they should have liver points and that yellows and blacks should have black points, unless of course they are yellow with liver points which is not true to standard, and cannot be exhibited in shows.
