I pay for all my pet puppies to be desexed, but just got a cert back from one that was desexed at 6 mths-and it is $585 for a simple female spey :) The most i have paid for an adult bitch was $310-i absolutely will not pay that .Does anyone else think that is a little high?

I calculate mine on the average of 3 different vets ,so max of $300 at the most.

Where is the quoting vet located Centitout. I'm pretty sure you'd not get a spey done many places around here for $300 these days.

Were there any bloods done or pathology? Were there complications? It's more than my boys op. and he had to have his testicles found in his abdomen, (bilaterally undescended) and very high up the tract, he had a special anaesthetic and an overnight stay. No aditional costs, post op meds were included, as was the follow up visit. I think his was more complex than a a spey, the total cost of the op was under $400, I had budgetted $600, (I think my vet is worth his weight in gold)

three vets-1 is the ones i use ,another is in the same town and the other i slocated closer to me here.

I dont mind paying for the actual op,but i am not paying for all the other things like pre-anaesthetic bloods etc.

Just one more reason why i am taking a break from breeding ,the costs for a litter are just getting too high.

According to my vets 'Cost of keeping a dog' information sheet, speying with them costs $350 - $517 depending on weight. I'd say a 6 month Bloodhound would be in the 21-30kg range?? which is $395 from my local vet.

I didnt say any amount unfortunately, just that i would send a rebate if done by 8 mths. The other girl that was done up there(different area) 6 weeks ago was only $285.

I will certainly be changing my contract to specify max of $300.I may as well of just given her the dog :)

If push comes to shove though,i will pay it,but she will have to wait a few weeks for the extra.

I think a $300 rebate is quite generous.

My vets go by weight ,as do most others,so if that is the case, they will have to be done earlier. Its little wonder so many people now wont get their females desexed,my emergency c-section at 2 in the morning +xrays, fluids,ABS etc was only $1200 all up and she was desexed at the same time,so added a further hr to the op time.

Whippet cost me $160, Shepherd $180-$200 at my clinic

Yes I to have whippets desexed at around $120 -$150 each.

......and yes to the questions that are going to follow. The vet does do blood tests, give pain relief, has modern equipment, uses proper anaesthetic techniques (I won't use a vet that uses benzo's with sighthounds), has a return check up in a week plus is the only reproductive specialist in the state.

Be interesting to know that, as with other services, if demographics plays a part with fees. ie: richer areas v's working class areas and prices.

I think ACA did a segment on this a few weeks back.
