Having just moved here, I'm trying not to be the paranoid pom and nuke every spider I see :)

I know this isn't a red back, but is it one to be concerned about :D It's very shy and runs back into it's lair every time I get close, so I don't think it's gonna rip my jugular out anytime soon

I'm curious to know what it is, so thanks for any info

Most likely a red back. Not all red backs have the red stripe.

its the right shape and right shaped web for a redback.

Uh oh, should I nuke it then :D Concerned for the cat more than anything.....

Not sure what it is- but what a GREAT photo!! :D It is a beautiful spider !

perhaps have a look HERE ?

Thank you  I just got a close as I dared with my Lumix and then cropped it.

Thanks for the link too :)

ugh, I made the mistake of following more links from the one Persephone gave, brrrrrrrrrr! the stuff of nightmares.

:) I think jumping spiders are so cute though ;)

Think I have found it!

It is a member of the same family as the Redback. Taken from wiki "The bite of S. grossa is known to be medically significant in humans, however without any long-lasting effects." So yes I'd nuke it to be on the safe side, esp with dogs. Or relocate it to a local park.

I used to live in Narracan (Gippsland) and I found a little spider there with a tail. I thought I'd discovered some weird new species so I rang somewhere, cant remember who now, but they said it was known and it was called the tailed spider, not very imaginative but if ever a spider was cute, this one was and I agree with crazycresties, jumping spiders are cute, as long as they dont jump on me.

Thanks Ravyk, it certainly looks like that maybe the one :D The variation within a single species is amazing!

Say bye bye spidey - I don't like killing things :)
