Reasons Not To Own Your Breed

Don't get a poodle if you don't intend doing much grooming (and that includes plucking hair from their ears)

Don't get a poodle if you can't stand a dog that barks and jumps up (trainable - but nevertheless an issue for many)

Don't get a poodle if you don't enjoy walking

Don't get a poodle if you don't like playing games with your dog

Don't get a poodle if you're a push-over (they're very smart and will be running your life before you know it)

Don't get a poodle if you're the kind of person who needs a lot of time alone

Don't get a poodle if you really want a baby, not a dog (none of this itsy bitsy poochy woochy stuff - they are smart dogs that thrive on work)

But do get a poodle if:

you like a dog that comes when called - and with gusto!

you like a dog that trains well (is both easy and fun to train)

you like a dog that doesn't shed

you like small dogs, or medium sized dogs, or big dogs (there's a poodle size to suit everyone)

you like a dog that enjoys being physically close to you

you like a dog that really, really likes you

And don't worry too much about that funny curly haired look. It grows on you. Permanently. :)

Yes it does! As a child we had a toy poodle and I said I would NEVER EVER have one don't like their curly hair or the "poodle" cuts....well what do I own and adore

Don't get a Border Collie if you want a dog that........

- Doesn't shed.

- Always loves all other dogs.

- Is happy being ignored - for any period.

- Is not going to push you to play endlessly.

- Is easy to train for specific behaviours. I think it is a myth that BC's are easy to train. They are undoubtedly VERY willing workers and that makes them fun to train, but they anticipate and can be quite stubborn. Once they learn the wrong thing it is quite hard to unteach it.

- Is not going to need a LOT of socialisation.

- Is not going to find its own job if you don't have time to give it one.

- Is not going to potentially chase anything that moves.

- Is not going to be happy on its own for extended periods.

- Is happy going for one short walk around the block a couple of times a week.

These don't all apply to every BC, but I've observed them all in one or other of my dogs.

I would like to add:

Don't get a Border Collie unless you know how to train a dog. They are easy to train but you need to get it right first go and be able to be consistant with your body language. For a novice dog owner to start with a Border is like someone learning to drive in a Ferrari.

Most importantly don't get a Border unless you have a high IQ or the dog will outsmart you at every turn. Border Collies are experts at training their owners if they get half a chance.

They are the best breed in the world if you know what you are doing and a complete disaster if you don't.

There's quite a few so far appliacable to Borzoi.

Don't get a Borzoi if you:

Mind having everything periodically covered in hair

Want a dog that reliably comes when it's called

Mind having holes all through the lawn in cricket season - anything is huntable!

Want small fluffy creatures to be safe running around your yard

Want a dog that does what you teach it without the "What's in it for me?" look

Mind being poked in the groin/butt by a long when you're not paying enough attention

Mind having your legs leant on so hard your knees feel like they're giving way

Mind having a very large and gangly dog climb in you lap at every opportunity

Mind explaining to strangers that no, they are no some weird kind of collie or Lassie dog, and yes, they are meant to be that skinny.

* a dog who will quite easily turn its back on you when it's had enough of a training session

* a dog with its own mind

* a dog that bounces off the walls if not given enough exercise

* a dog who will burrow under the blankets at night and protest loudly if you dare move :D

* a dog prone to being overdramatic

* a lion in sheep's clothing!

Don't get a Bichon if you don't want:

* to spend a lot of time grooming or having the dog clipped

* a dog who loves you and everyone else (!)

* a dog who isn't afraid to demand your attention

* a dog who will act as an alarm system

* a food lover

Don't get a terrier if you don't want:

* as much love and licking as you could possibly handle

* prey drive

* an extremely bold companion who will take on anything that comes its way

* a dog who needs exercise and stimulation

Agree!!! I spend a lot of time talking people out of my favourite breed of dog!!! So many people find that really ironic, I view it as helping people think about what they really want in a dog other than good looks!

Don't get a German Shedder Shepherd if:

you don't like hair in your car, home, bed, food, places the dog has never been....

you like having things on the coffee table (or anything else at that height).

After having shepherds for over 30 years I've now have a beautiful long-coat girl that doesn't shed all the time (she doesn't have an undercoat :) ).

However ......... our other dog is a Goldie

Don't get a Goldie if you hate vacuuming

This thread is great! There are a couple of posts saying if you don't want xxx in a dog, get a cat... Probably not a great idea...

If you don't want shedding, don't get a cat

If you want affection on your own terms don't get a cat

If you want obedience don't get a cat

If you don't want pursuit of small creatures don't get a cat

If you want devotion regardless of who provided the food don't get a cat

Etc etc etc

Dont get a bullmastiff if....

you are house proud and dont like to get dirty. Slobber will get on your clothes, your couch, your skin, your walls, your floor.

If you want a dog that will respond in seconds to your command. They are very slow at doing what you want. And often have to be "made" to do it.

if want a dog that will do repetitive obedience procedures. They get bored quickly, and dont do repitition well. Food is helpful, but even that gets boring.

if you want a high drive dog. They are very laid back and will happily spen the day (and night) sleeping.

if you dont have patience ;)

If you cant handle stubborness.

If you want a dog for a running partner.

If you want a dog that you can let off lead. Bullmastiffs can be dog aggressive and our breed doesnt need any more nails in the BSL coffin

if you want a dog that will always play nicely with other dogs. see above comment.

if you want a dog that will "play fetch" etc. Whilst Im sure some will, none of mine have. The ones that tried it gave up after one or two gos.

if you are not a confident, strong leader, that always enforces the rules and sets boundaries that are not to be broken. A bullmastiff will walk all over you, without you even realising it.

if you want a dog you can take out on hot days. Bullmastiff dont do heat too well.

if you cant handle judgemental people giving you evil glares , crossing the road when you come toward them or telling you how viscious your dogs are and one day they will just "snap" and attack you . Bullmastiffs get the baby killer looks all the time.

if you cant handle redneck ferals approaching you for converstaion. Bullmastiffs unfortunately attract them by the truck load or should that be, piggin' ute load.

if you cant handle 60kg of love, slobber and kisses on your lap.

Don't get a Pomeranian if:

You don't want to groom your pet everyday, or have a dog that doesn't shed

You don't want to get stopped in the street by everyone wanting to say hello to your dog..

You don't want a dog that yaps, and likes to warn you about everything.. Be it a fly, or an imaginary fly..

You don't want cuddles every moment of the day..

And...

Don't get a Pomeranian if you want to ever be on the toilet without your Pomeranian in there with you

Don't get a corgi if;

*You can't deal with shedding

*You can't deal with the amount of personality that allows a 10-15kg dog to be able to move several hundred kilos of cattle around

*You can't deal with a dog that has a sense of humour - and is prepared to do whatever it takes to get giggles

*You want a dog that doesn't shed

*You want a dog that will do exactly what you tell it every time -and can't cope with a dog who's perfectly capable of thinking of 'better' ways to do things

*You want a dog that won't back chat you if you aren't doing things 'their way'

*You can't deal with corgi hair in everything

*You think that you're getting a lap dog, just because they're cute

*You're not prepared to deal with a drivey herding dog who will find 'jobs' to do if you won't give them one

Oh, and did I mention the shedding? ;)
