Taking In A Foster Puppy

Our local vet has 9 orphaned puppies who need permanent & foster homes.

Am I totally crazy for even considering being a foster mom?

What do I need to know? I've never really thought about this before but I know there's a lack of foster homes in this town so thought maybe I could help.

Good on you for considering it! :) Things to consider:

Will your current pets be OK with a naughty puppy in the house?

Will you be able to keep puppy seperate from big dogs if need be?

Do you have a crate or spare room that you can use to confine puppy for quiet time?

Have the puppies been vaccinated and are your dogs up to date with vaccs?

Who will manage the rehoming?

Who will pay for food, vet bills, etc?

good for you!

one word of advice

crate, crate, crate

puppy to eat, sleep and put in it for down time

also make sure that the pup has been quarantined and not carrying any nasties

good luck with it all! fostering is a wonderful experience!

Hi kja

I think it's a great idea! Just this week I became a first time foster mum and I'm very very lucky to have a well behaved sweet little boy (makes me realise just how naughty mine is).

She's very jealous of him but it's good learning for her to understand to share food, toys and attention although I'd never leave them alone unattended.

I'm loving it so far, going to miss the little guy when he goes.

OK, well it looks like I'll get a pup early next week

Can't wait to bring her home and hopefully find a forever family for her quickly!

There may be a chance that you'll see some photos of her

Fostering is great, good for you.

I've fostered cats/kittens before. I love cats in general, but am definitely a dog person, so haven't fostered a puppy as I can't imagine giving him/her back at the end. That's the biggest difficulty as far as I'm concerned. My last 2 kittens I fostered are now officially adopted (by me) and well and truly part of the family - oops, foster fail!

I pretty much exclusively foster puppies, and find it very rewarding indeed.

I have crates, playpens, toys, food, and lots of love as my "arsenal" - and my own 3 dogs love having lots of little playmates around.

Depending on age, it's not really that difficult to care for one or more pups at any given time... I have cared for litters of 7, 8, 9 with no major problems - even when having a full time job...

Just an update: three of the six pups that were coming to Exmouth have been adopted by forever homes

The other three are still in Carnarvon and the vet thinks they will come up today or tomorrow. She's going to contact me if they still need foster parents, but she's pretty confident that she has good homes for these three, too!!

The last three are staying in C'von as they also have forever homes already.

So, I'll be sad that I can't play with a puppy but super happy if they've all found great homes :)
