Jessie Has Had Her Operation :)

Recommended Posts

This is Jessie. Jessie lives in South Australia. She is turning 1 on the 1st of April. We recent rescued Jessie from the Port Augusta pound where she had been dropped off by her previous owners. As you can see she has a deformed left front leg. We have taken her to the vet's for the first time in her life and we were told that her leg was injury as a puppy and one of her growth plates had stopped growing. Resulting in he leg bowing over. We have had x-rays done and have now been referred to a specialist. We have been told the cost for her operation will be in the thousands. We are asking everyone if you could please spare some money to help Jessie get back on her feet that would be much appreciated. We need your help to let everyone know about Jessie's story. She will hopeful soon be able to walk like a normal dog She is now being fostered with my family until we can find her a suitable home.

Here is some information about Jessie's Proposed Operation if we can raise the $3000 dollars:

Basically in normal cases they would cut a wedge out of the bone to help straighten out then leg and them attach an external device onto the leg to stabilise it and to help it grow this can take a few op to get it fully straight. The healing time is about 4 months, in Jessie's case her leg is 7 cm short then her other leg so cutting into it will only shorten it. So the vet has advise there is another way. It will only take one operation and he will insert a plat into Jessie's bone to make it a few cm longer and then cut the wedge to straight the leg out. There will be no need for the external device as the plate is the support and she will have a bandage on for 2 weeks.

I would like to say a big thank you in advanced to VetSAIR- Veterinary Surgical and Advanced Imaging Referrals www.vetsair.com.au who are donating their time and expertise and doing the surgery for the cost of materials, we really appriciate their efforts and kind hearts.

Why not organise some type of fundraiser event? (check your state legislation for the rules) Maybe organise a garage sale or something like that? Show the people that you are asking for money that you are really committed to this.

What have you done so far to raise funds besides just asking people for money?

Has the dog been assessed to show it has a suitable temperament for rehoming?

That is a lot of money to expect people to just hand over, and you could be waiting quite a while. This operations sounds very risky and there is no guarantee of success. Good luck.

As soon as my money from Nigeria comes through I'll cover the cost of the operation for you, just send me your credit card details so I can deposit the money. The oil rig I'm on only has limited net access so will arrange transfer via a third party based in Iran. Again, I'll need you credit card details first so my Russian bride can use it to get the Nigerian prince his money, then I will wire transfer the money back to.

I love scammers. :)

Jess is involved in greyhound rescue, although I don't know any more about her than that.

I don't think this is a scam as such, but would like to see more rescuers in general use effective and transparent fundraising methods rather than just begging.

I would also be interested in hearing a bit more about Jess's rescue process than a vague promise to 'find a home'.

It's quite a lot of surgery so the first question I'd be asking is whether it's really necessary. It might not look great, but if Jess's not in pain and is using her leg reasonably normally then perhaps doing nothing is a better option than invasive surgery? If the leg is causing pain or difficulty, then another option is amputation. Most dogs do well on three legs and it is much less expensive surgery with reasonably rapid recovery and less chance of infection or complications.

With all due respect to your vet, I'd be asking for another opinion. Specialist vets are very keen on complicated solutions because it's what they do (I suppose it's the old adage about every problem looking like a nail to a man who only has a hammer). Good luck with whatever you decide.

This injury will inevitably lead to arthritis in later years. It should not be left as it is.

I agree that amputation would be an option based on what I think of the x-ray. But I am not a vet.

I don't have the experience to comment on whether the operation is a good or bad idea, but I love greys and like to try and help rescue with donations when I can. I too thought it might be a scan, so I checked with the vet .. He replied as follows:

.... "I can confirm that we are planning to do surgery on Jessie for her leg once we have enough funds raised. I am the surgery specialist that will be performing the surgery.

Feel free to use the website you have for donation if you'd like. Or, if you'd rather donate the money to our hospital directly, you can contact (removed because I haven't asked the person's permission to post their name and email but happy to PM details to anyone).

Thank you for helping Jessie! She is a great dog!"...

Like I have with some other needy dogs I will be sending a donation..

Hello all,

Thank you all for you for your concern. I am with a private greyhound rescue and help greyhounds who are put in pounds. I have personal rescue 4 greyhounds and two are my own. Jessie has a home waiting for her. I am doing a home visit this weekend. You can definitely contact the vet themselves just contact 0871278370 and ask for Fiona and to donate for Jessie the greyhound's operation. In regards to fundraising we have had a greyhound walk in Victoria over the Easter weekend and raised $300 now we are trying to organise a Bunning BBQ.

Thank you

If people make bank transfers, they will need to e-mail us as well so we can make sure it gets accounted for in our computer as a credit for Jessie. That's what I thought. :(

I think it's great what you are doing for Jessie, Jess. I hope she goes on to live a long, happy and healthy life in her new home. She looks like a very sweet and deserving girl. She's lucky to have you on her side. :thanks:

And just a thought, have you considered running a raffle to help raise some funds? might be worth a try too.

Wishing you & Jessie all the best and please keep us updated on her progress. :)
