A Dog Charged And Grabbed Our Dog This Arvo

This afternnon about 5pm my future DIL was out walking Dexter ( 10mth old Lab) she was on the opposite side of the road to a house as this other dog a (GSD) always carries on at the fence, jumping up and looking over it at anyone who walks past.

She saw the owner open the gates to take the garbage bin out, and the dog charged accross the street at them almost getting hit by a car in the process, Dexter sat and kinda leaned into DIL legs the dog grabbed him around the throat meanwhile DIL is screaming 'get your f*** in dog' the guy dissapears into the house, another dog walker was close by he yelled at the dog and it backed away still growling ect then took off back into the yard, the owner then closes the gate. Dexter is fine, no visible wounds but DIL was very shaken up by the time they got back home.

We were going to wait and report it tomorrow but ended up going into the police station, they said it was a matter for the council ranger as DIL wasnt bitten and Dexter was ok. They officer rang the ranger with our details then the ranger rang on our way back home. He went straight around to the house then called back to say they will be investigating it further as the owner said " he went back into get a lead as he can't control the dog without one" then said he thought DIL had gone thats why he didnt even bother to check they were ok, but she saw him close the gate when the dog went back in. The owner wanted our details of course the Ranger didnt give them to him, siad it will be a minimum $550 fine or could even go to court. The owner obviously has problems controlling the dog, why would he be such an idiot to let it out the gate :mad

It would of been a different story with a smaller dog or one that would of reacted to being grabbed like that, poor Dexter was just in shock and froze.

This come on top of another friend having her toy poodle attacked while out walking last week ( in Qld), dog broke through a fence to get them, he ended up having surgery. I'm not sure if she has reported this as the owners of that dog drove her to the vet then home so is worried they know where she lives ( they did pay the vet bill) but I bet its not the first time its happened and will happen again.

One thing Im kinda glad about is that my son is away working for a couple of days as he would of been on the doorstep and I dont think things would of been pleasent.

I also hope Dexter isnt too scared now of other dogs especially GSD :(

Gosh he's incredibly lucky to have gotten off without any lasting damage! I hope your daughter in law (?) isn't too shaken up either, I know that would have scared the heck out of most people!

I hope you're all okay, if not a little shaken, and Dexter gets right back on the horse, so to speak.

I'm glad the ranger actually did go follow up on it, next time it could be anything, animal or person.

You're very lucky! All of you!

What a horrible experience. Sounds like the Ranger has gotten onto it quickly and is taking it seriously though which is great.

No, not really. Dog aggression does not correlate in any way to human aggression. Just because this dog has attacked another dog does not mean it's a risk to people.

I still don't know if I'd want to chance it, and like I said, even being bowled over by a dog that size could do a lot of damage!

Yes it was great the ranger got onto it straight away as this was around 6-6.30pm when he was contacted.

DIL ( yes daughter in law ) was still very shaken up, was in tears when she got back here (they live with us). Hopefully she isnt too scared now.

Be aware Dexter could have bruising around his throat and check him very carefully to make sure there isn't a tooth hole as they can become very nasty.

Yeah its hard to tell, no visible blood but possibly some underneath all the fur, hard to see on a dark dog, will certianly keep an eye on any signs of infections/swelling.

:o I thought it was a child ! ......."our boy"

Glad Dexter seems OK... a vet visit might be in order, so it is 'on record' and so he can be checked carefully.Labs have pretty tough necks, though, and that loose skin serves a good purpose :)

A very scary thing for everyone.

I'd be asking around friends - or even on here- if anyone with very dog friendly dogs would meet up with your dog asap.

This is the sort of experience that can possibly make your dog a bit nervous around other dogs.

Maybe your DIL needs to get it on record with her GP too.

Sorry pers for you thinking it was a child........I have edited it :) Yes all the loose skin he has sure did save him from any serious damage.

Glad to hear that all is fine and that no-one got hurt as a result of someone else's irresponsible attitude. This person knew that they couldn't control the dog without a leash so why didn't they make sure that their dog was unable to get out, forethought is something that escapes so many people and ends up with tragic consequences. frown.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

I was looking for another thread to sort of vent but I couldn't find it, a similar thing just happened to my dog about 45 mins ago, my dogs just had her flew/lip ripped open by a staff pit mix.

Short story 2 dogs dog and bitch are fence agro and very rarley seen mind you, well the male one just busted through the gate and charged and grabbed my dog in the street, I kicked it for six, the stupid thing rushed back and all I could do was just grabbed it by the scruff and rump before it contacted again and hurled it over the fence.

I can't get to a vet till tomorrow so I just irrigated the wound with a syringe full of betadine.

awful, awful!!

I had a similar thing happen to Kenz when she was about 6 months old but it was a GSD on lead, unable to be controlled by it's eldery owner who also didn't warn me to walk further than out almost on to the road to pass them (they were stopped talking to someone on the footpath with dog at full length of lead, and at the corner we were turning at, it lunged and grabbed her on the back of the neck and pretty much picked her up). Anyway, I'll mention... make sure you socialise your little one well with safe, friendly dogs in the coming days/weeks - in a controlled manner obviously. I'm certain when Kenz had this experience it contributed to some of her issues around other unknown dogs on lead and I probably didn't deal with the aftermath as well as I could have (of course hind sight is also wonderful). Maybe your munchkin will deal with it better, but it's just something I'm aware of now when my pup meets a dog that is less than social.
