This include puppy books and books about dogs and children. I'd look for books that are specific to the breed. It's hard to know what's on the shelves of booksellers these days - I have a "for Dummies" book which is not too bad, but prefer a few of the older books from the 1950s and 60s. They are very good on basic care in the days when you couldn't run off to the vet at the drop of a hanky. You just need to be aware that some of the old remedies are no longer recommended. They're also very good at the basics of training if your not looking for anything too fancy. Local libraries usually have a good selection of books on dogs. Online auction sites and book-sellers have a good selection of second-hand and collectable-type books. I don't know any general dog books. Am sure they would be out of print, but they were so encouraging and readable. "Waaaaaaaalkies" which is one of her terms, is still in use here. However that more aimed towards performance dogs and not a general what you need to know. For those people Ian Dunbar comes to mind, he is recommended by some of the clubs I train at. vague Posted November 20, 2013 Share Posted November 20, 2013 Barron's dog training bible by Andrea Arden is brilliant. covers everything from understanding your dog, positive training, house training (including crate) and socialisation to behaviour problems and how to correct as well as teaching tricks etc. Around $27.00. If you think Barbara Woodhouse is controversial, have a read about the "Alpha Wolf Roll" popularised by the Monks. Their earlier books were mainly geared toward GSDs. I haven't read their latest, but see that there are plenty of reviews and good ratings at the online book stores. They've removed the "Alpha Roll" and, from what I can see, the book seems to be fairly general even though it still uses GSDs as the reference point. "The Art of Raising a Puppy" has a preview. However no beating around the head re Barbara Woodhouse. Never read her books but used to watch her in the UK. Esky the husky Posted November 22, 2013 Share Posted November 22, 2013 I found the Ian Dunbar books made me really paranoid. Well the 'before' is really good, the after made me so anxious.. Never let a pup have an accident inside, need to meet 100+ people etc. On balance though I like to draw bits from everything I've read. I actually really liked one of Cesar's books. I dont nessasarily like his techniques with rehab. But his messages about dogs are solid. Treat your dog as a dog not a human baby. Excercise, discipline, affection. Rules, boundaries, limitations .. It was written by Dr Katrina Warren back in her Harry's practice days and features her border collie Toby. There's 20 'tricks' to learn like beg, shake hands, sad face, take a bow, find a person etc. The instructions are very simple and a kid could easily read the book and carry out the instructions I'd think.
