Progesterone Levels

Hi all

I would love to hear opinions on Progesterone levels.

My girl is on day 14 after 2 AI's with chilled semen.

Her Progesterone level at 7pm last night was 70.3 and the Vet gave her a Progesterone injection last night as well.

I have been advised 70-80 is a normal range.

Does anyone know how long it may take for Progesterone injections to work.

I am going to pick up some Prog. injections on friday so we can continue to give her injections at home.

Thank you in advance

I gather the OP is meaning injections for keeping the prog level at the ideal level to help the survival of the litter .

Has she had issues before??

If your vet is a repo vet then they should be answering the questions

My repo specialist said he found the injection caused problems with the prog. test results and the tablets were a better way to go ?.

Yes once a prog injection is given the prog test results don't mean squat. Tablets are a safer way to go as it's easier to monitor levels.

I thought giving extra progesterone in the first half of pregnancy caused bad side effects in the puppies. Everything I have read says you supplement after 4-5 weeks and only do so after blood tests that show the level is starting to fall

Yes that's correct. It can cause male puppies to develop incorrectly. And agree it's really only done once pregnancy is confirmed and to maintain levels.

I've heard 'spotting' can be quite normal if there is only a small amount. Sometimes when they implant in the uterus there can be a bit of blood... same as women who are pregnant

I have used progesterone tablets for one of my girls but it was only after she had lost her pups at day 51. This girl went on to have 3 litters each time with the help of progesterone tablets from about 6 weeks in - all pups born healthy and without complications. One of her daughters had the same problem and needed the tablets another carried full term without any need for help. Good luck with the pups and mum.

I may add I had progesterone blood test along the way and only supplemented when progesterone began to fall.

  • 2 weeks later...

I really hope the spotting is from the implanting in the uterus. She has had 2 different lots of spotting now but then it just stops and she is fine.

Re spotting - my girl spotted after mating, and then quite heavily at 18 days after mating and I took her to the vet. The vet checked for infection, and took blood for prog testing. Told me to come back for ultrasound at 3 weeks. Did ultrasound, and told me very firmly no pup, and the spotting meant her uterus couldn't accept implantation and the prog level indicated not pregnant.

Well I was worried re pyo as that can be a consequence of empty bitches, and her abdomen just didn't feel right. Discussed it with a very experienced friend, and at 4 weeks went to breeder vet - for an ultrasound to check for pyo developing. And the very first thing that showed was ... a puppy!!!. The vet, the vet nurse and me were all so happy! It would have been the end of my lines. My bitch spotted the entire pregnancy, sometimes hardly anything, others a bit more. BUT she had nine very healthy pups.

lesson - always use an experienced repro vet.
