Please Make Sure Your Dogs Are Okay In The Heat
JulesP replied to InspectorRex's topic in General Dog Discussion
She knows how to get out, she just physically couldn't. She was fine Mother Moocher, she is also a bit (a lot) dotty so stuff like that doesn't seem to bother her. Bothers me a heap more! -
Please Make Sure Your Dogs Are Okay In The Heat

Had a bit of a nasty incident with the clam shell last night. Even though the dogs aren't fans I felt guilty and set it up for them yesterday. Early this morning (2.00amish) I heard lots of splashing which went on for quite a while. Knowing the 2 young dogs aren't water fans I went out and investigated. My old dog was in the shell and couldn't get out. I had to lift her out. Poor old girl. -

I don't have aircon so the dogs stay outside. They have stacks of shade and cool areas to lie on. They haven't used their clam shell in the past either. -
I don't understand why some people insist upon being so close to other people! It is one of my pet hates in restaurants and cinemas, when they are empty and the people come and sit right near you.

Ohhhh they are trying to get Susan to come out next year!

It's Official - Atlas Is An Amazing Protector
JulesP replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Good boy Atlas! Very scary for you. Maybe a security screen might be a good idea? -
Corvus why don't you go and have a lesson with K9 Force? As with a lot of things it is easier to have someone show you. I do agree that people are using the word to describe a dog that is just revved up. My dogs actually go more 'still', more contained as they should for their breed imo. I think each breed will show it in different ways. Bedazzled there are quite a few people here using drive that compete in obedience. For anyone that rides horses I would liken it to when you truly get engagement rather than just pulling the head onto the bit. You know that feeling of power that could explode but whilst you control it feels amazing?

Whats The Most 'out There' Thing You Have Done
JulesP replied to lilypily's topic in General Dog Discussion
Both the house and car were purchased for the animals. Ok I like them too but sometimes I think a nice courtyard would be lovely so I didn't have to spend hours mowing. But then I watch the Borders be able to really stretch out and run here and it is worth it. -
My friend was told that her pup's parents live on a farm I had told her the whole Leo story prior to the purchase btw.

I went through this with a friend. She wanted a certain scruffy look. Was after a larger dog. I suggested a standard poodle. Didn't like the look. I couldn't get a good pic of a scruffy poodle. There are some pics on this thread that I reckon would have swayed her. She ended up with a Poodle x Goldie form a petshop grrrrrrrrrrrr. A couple of months ago we were out lunching and there was a lovely brown standard poodle with a scruffy type cut. She loved it!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Tell your mate that the oodles are rather mental. I get heaps coming through my training classes and they are all a handful. They are just too much dog for the average pet owner.

Do You Train Your Dogs Equally?
JulesP replied to Bubitty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If Bubby is a good citizen and isn't looking for things to do then you really don't need to train him. I could easily never train one of my border collies again. He is super obedient and a joy to have around, a bit of NILF and he stays in control. The younger girl looks for things to do so I would continue training her. All the training I do is for the dog's sake, not mine. I have a breed that needs to be doing stuff so I do stuff with them. -
I had pretty much given up of trying to work in drive. Had been to a Steve clinic and the dogs are just too polite! Started to do sheep herding with Poppy. Had a problem in that she got so transfixed with the sheep that she would not move. To get her moving I would use a whooshing noise to encourage her. One day I made the noise during obedience and there she was in drive. It is always said that you need something the dog really values to get drive, and umm sheep is it for Poppy Not sure how long the trigger word will work if it isn't paired with the sheepies though.

Carlibud my herding group has all sorts of different dogs attending. We have a couple of GSD! Also have Sammies, Belgians, Corgies, Lappies, Aussies, Kelpies, OES, Briads. It is very interesting to watch the different herding styles that the dogs have naturally.

Good luck with getting a pup Cosmolo!

Taking my adult border collies to see sheep for the first time was an amazing experience. Especially my female border. It was like for her the whole world just snapped into place. To see the instinct in these show dogs is amazing, well I think so. Could my girl have made a 'real' working dog? In the right hands I think she could have.

The weather was too bad for fireworks last night. Hoping that doesn't mean people will do them tonight.

Are your dogs ok?
-
3 border collies on their way to dyzney!!! I used to love grooming my dogs and washing my ponies. Loved it. Then I got my own grooming business and 5 years after giving it up I still hate washing animals! Bit spewing about it really. I even got a hydrabath this year and that hasn't made me like it again.
-
My Border Poppy has to give me a present too! Even if it is just a pebble. And she makes the most horrendous noise, a very high pitched squealing!
-
What happens if you place the scented article but throw an unscented one? Be interesting to see which one she brings back then.
-
Fingers crossed for pup. I hope you didn't get into too much trouble with OH.

Actually asal writing this thread and thinking further gave me part of the answer or why I am so anxious about breeding - I am a control freak! And obviously there is a heap that you can't control with breeding. My litter was super planned and researched but it still went wrong. So yes a crystal ball would be really good!
