Mobile Grooming Trailer Need Help
JulesP replied to The Shearing Shed's topic in General Dog Discussion
I sold mine from the Trading Post. -
Yeah think it is the lack of belly hair that makes her looked tucked up. Don't worry about it deelee. I get told my dogs are fat because they have heaps of coat. I know they aren't, so I just ignore the comments.

Yeah! Congrats!

Sorry but just because you live on acreage does not mean that you don't need a way to contain your dogs. It is one of my pet hates. It doesn't take long for a dog to nick off and get into all sorts of trouble. Unless you are standing outside with them, then they should be safely contained.

I usually go around and check each person individually. It is really the only way to make sure that each person has the timing etc right. I try not to spend too long with each person. I don't tend to address one person whilst the rest of the group listens as this seems to embarrass people. Often after the exercise I will then discuss with the group if there are problems I noticed, without singling out the person. I stay at the end of the class for any questions. Me me me people are a little tricky to handle. Keeping the group to a manageable size helps the instructor to speak to everyone.

Meeting the pup's parents hasn't really been a priority for me at all. It is nice to meet them but I am not really fussed about it. I guess when you get to know bloodlines etc it gets less important. I also trust the person I have been buying pups from to tell me what the parent's temperament is like. If I was going to a new breeder I would like to meet the bitch and then for her to be put away. I wouldn't handle pups with the bitch there. I also wouldn't go and look at pups until they were 6 weeks old anyhow.

My brag for the day is I've stopped wanting to vomit when I go into our practice trial ring and I can maintain the ability to breath through the whole run through!

That cold day was better than the Greg D clinic that was on a stinking hot day! Would rather do the cold day again.

One of my dogs used to go nuts when an air gun was used but she would never attack the person using it. She did try and bite at the air though. It didn't look like her normal prey drive.

Sounds similar to what happens if someone plays Nickleback near me. Violent rage directed at the responsible person.

Susan Garrett's Shaping Success has lots of good info about shaping.

Here is a pic of my Bunnings pen attached to my crate. I love it! No getting up every 2 seconds to see what the hell pup is getting up to. I don't even lock pup in the crate bit, she has the whole crate and pen.

Heidi I needed to try something different as luring was a problem. Amber was soooo into that chicken that whilst she was sitting and dropping as I lured her I didn't think it was sinking into her little brain as her brain was filled with 'nom, chicken, givemechicken, nom, nom'. She was going pretty nuts. Since then I have lured a new thing once and then have waited for her to offer that behaviour again. Once they work out the game they do seem to offer behaviours. Well Amber is. I can see her thinking now rather than just going nuts for the food. If the dog offers other behaviours after the correct one then I would suggest that they aren't being clicked and treated quick enough. The 'its your choice' game is great too That really helped. I learn't it at the Greg D clinic but all my dogs already had good stays so I didn't really get its worth but with a fresh pup - wow!

Hard to say why the dog did it unless you could see it happening. But yes you can squash prey drive. I am really good at it
-
Can you do it without the bite work or is that integral to the whole thing?
-
Will he eat anything at all? Talking super yummy stuff.

I would get the vet to check him over first to make sure that there isn't a physical reason for him to refuse to move.

Private lessons here

Thanks Steve.

I would probably like one-on-one lessons Brooke.

Seeing as we are talking early development here and K9 Force is around, can I ask a couple of questions? What age would you start drive work K9 Force? I have a new pup that looks like she will like toys but I have managed to make the other borders too well behaved (will not take tug off Mummy). Any tips on avoiding this with this pup? She has a different nature so it might not be an issue anyway.

This is for basic obedience not tricks btw.

So I consider myself too impatient to do shaping. I did teach Poppy retrieve by shaping. I also found that neither Poppy or Brock would offer behaviors, even as little pups. They are very much 'tell us what to do' dogs. But little Amber was a bit too much into food for luring. Nothing was going in the brain as the 'nom nom nom' thoughts were too strong. Leopuppy suggested shaping so I have been having a go at that. Amber is responding well. You can really see her thinking 'what do you want?'. Very cute. Is it wrong to combine luring and shaping? ie lure the dog into a drop and then see if they will then offer the behavior. Or do you just have to sit there and wait for things to happen?

You want to be the source of all fun and satisfaction for your dog that is why you isolate them. I personally wouldn't do this but I don't encourage my dogs to play with strange dogs or to play on lead. I do want them to see me as the most fun thing out and they do. p.s. am answering for any genuinely interested people out there!

I'm in a better financial state this time so count me in!
