I think corrections do work and quicker. I just prefer a different way of doing things for training and I have a breed of dog that allows this. For behavioural issues like stock chasing I would use an ecollar. As I am a member of a club that uses positive methods I am disappointed in the number of people that just want to jump straight to a check chain and not put in the work.
-
I wanna get an ecollar thingo.....but I would be putting it on my pupils It all gets down to the negative/positive thing I guess. I find it interesting that the people that use negative training think the positive people are idiots and don't know anything. Anyone that says that they don't like prongs, ecollars etc gets jumped on.

What's Important To You?
JulesP replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My aim is a happy dog. A happy, well adjusted animal is the most important thing to me. I don't have borders so I can do dog sports, I do dog sports because borders are my choice of dog. I have no desire to go sheep herding (actually think it is a bit mean on the sheep), but if that makes the dogs happy then I will go do it. Doesn't mean I am soft on the dogs as IMO a happy dog knows its place and knows its boundaries. If they are starting to be feral a good bit TOT at dinner time usually restores harmony. -
Check out the price in horse shops/produce places. Not sure how it compares to the human stuff.

And they are a Pet Goods Direct store which is owned by PP! It doesn't matter if they don't actually sell pets, the money is going to the same company that does sell pets and does sell puppy farm puppies.

Do You Give Guarantees? Do You Expect Guarantees?
JulesP replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No I wouldn't ask for a guarantee but I wouldn't be approaching it as you fixing a problem but more as me learning. Sometimes you learn lots, sometimes a little bit Certainly been a few horse trainers over the years that I would have liked my money back from, lol. I wouldn't be taking on someone as a client that sent a aggressive email. -
Cause the RAW dudes are pretty passionate about it all. That is why I said you need to decide what you believe!! I tried feeding the inside cats some bones, that was a pain in the arse with them dragging chicken necks around the house. Yuck. You need to be feeding bones with quite a bit of meat on them (chicnken frames, wings, lamp flaps etc) A dog eats these pretty quickly. I don't usually get back inside the house before my dogs have scoffed theirs! So it is not like Barkly will be chopping on a marrow bone for hours in the house. Some dogs do try to bury the bones in the couch though!

Prey model diet you are aiming to feed your dog as if it had caught its own prey so you need to feed whole animals. You can do this in parts! ie bones, meat and offal. Although your dog would probably be pretty excited if you dished up a whole cow . That is the basic theory anyhow. Meat minus bones causes a calcium problem, that is why all meat would be bad. Google Raw Meaty Bones for more info.

For info on BARF I suggest that you get hold of the books by Ian Billinghurst. Give Your Dog a Bone is the one I have. Info on Raw or Prey google Raw Meaty Bones and you will get info on Tom Lonsdale's stuff. The basic difference is in Raw Meaty Bones/Prey you pretty much just feed dead animals! BARF you feed some veggies and other stuff. I don't like how BARF has changed into feeding those BARF patties. I prefer to do the diet from scratch. Up to you to decide what you believe! But do the research as I have seen dogs that have got quite ill from their owners not following the diets correctly.

Old Fella - Falling Over And Can't Get Up!
JulesP replied to raphsta's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi I have a similar problem with my old border collie. She is about to turn 15. Both backlegs are a bit dodgy (one due to a tendon problem) and that combined with arthritis means she has trouble getting around. She seems to have problems standing up on soft beds so doesn't lay on them anymore. She also has trouble going up the steps into the garden. She come for a walk this morning around the paddocks and was very slow. BUT she is still happy and eating. Very hard to watch the decline though and hard to know when the right time is to say goodbye. A few times last week I thought she was gone as I walked right up and she didn't wake up until I spoke to her. Also having trouble grooming her as she seems to find it uncomfortable. Sigh. -
Yeah food and toys distract me rather than motivate me!

I get distracted more than the dog

Yeah I found the shadow heeling easy to do with Brock, but found that his normal heeling is now not as close. Not that I do obedience with him but I had a go the other day. I had also taught him to hand touch when heeling which means he follows my hands well in agility.
-
With your agility heel work you don't want the same sort of focus. You want them looking in front at the jumps/obstacles. If you don't want to compete in obedience as well I wouldn't be worrying so much about face focus. I got told off the other week for having too much focus and asked if I had been doing that obedience stuff!

Wheat and corn are only a problem if your dog has an allergy to them.

The Beginning Of The End

Interesting way to gather doggie people together. Bye bye -
Sorry to hear that your pup isn't well Cavmum. There are some US people talking on a cat forum and there doesn't appear to be any cases of Orijen making cats sick in the US. Hope that helps. The makers still don't seem to know exactly what has caused the problem and are still running tests.

Just a question on this - are the people that want to join vetted in any way for mental stability????????? -
I've used a similar product in the past called Phuds http://www.brownsanimalherbals.com.au/inde...5&Itemid=62 Have just got some again after the Orijen angst. The dogs loved it and did well on it. Almost too well!
