  1. Renae, Miah and Toby finishing off their serves of birthday cake
  2. It doesn't seem that long ago Miah came into our lives but it was 2 years ago she did on our 8th wedding anniversary. Well she turned 2 yesterday on our 10th wedding Anniversary! (27th Nov) We had a big party for her 1st birthday but just a small one this year for her 2nd birthday with Renae and Toby ;) The day we met Miah Her 2nd birthday cake, made by me [attachment=281795:DSCF4543a.jpg] More photos to follow, i cant seem to add them in the one post...
  3. Good idea! we have a toy box with blanket on it at the end of our bed and another step box thing next to it .. its idea for old Renae and Miah because shes little in size ;)
  4. Weird.. i have always had both sexes, noones ever said that to me I prefer girl dogs but our boys have always been more affectionate. ( in whatever breed I/We have owned)
  5. Thats great! You will have to keep us updated please We own 3 Cavaliers, love them to bits (ranging from an almost 2 year old to a 12 year old) 2 girls and a sooky boy lol (our last boy one 'Joey' was a very loving sooky boy also) Our girls tend to be more independent
  6. The majority of Cavs are very friendly with everyone especially if they have been well socialised in a positive way ;)
  7. Thats terrible cleveland... and really rude they took your $50 to put in an application with them if they were always going say NO I actually don't recall paying anything both times to put our application in for a 3rd dog. Im pretty sure we didn't have to pay anything (other than the small transfer of rego fee from our latest dog's former ownership to our details with the council)
  8. Yes Cavs are known for some health issues but theres no guarantees with any type of dog. I know many Cavs that have lived fairly healthily to wonderful old ages. I have a 12 year old one and she does have age related issues (that any dog can get) but shes doing very well atm. I knew a 17 year old at our SA Cavalier club, he passed away not long after. 17 is not the norm tho with their life expectancy. Don't let it dismiss you from owning one if you like their qualities and they are suitable to your environment and lifestyle. We have 3 of them , well we had another one but we did lose him last year to brain tumour , he was only 9 and it was just sadly one of those things that could have happened to any breed of dog. I've had heeler X's in the past that were given their wings before they got to old ages from cancer Best to go through a reputable breeder to increase your chances of buying a healthy dog, no matter what breed you decide on. All the best ;)
  9. We are lucky here in Goolwa , getting a third dog permit is fairly easy provided you have a history of no complaints made and proper fencing and that they are registered (or about to be) 1st time we applied for one just had to get the application ticked off. 2nd time we applied ( as once you go back to 2 dogs, and you get another one, you have to reapply again) they did come out and check out our property and asked a few questions like how we dispose of their poo's etc. The guy that came out did want to meet them, but i only took the 2 younger ones outside as Renae is getting old and cranky at times and just kept her inside. We were approved but of course theres conditions on the applications that it can be revoked if they become a nuisance with barking, getting out etc Both times that we are aware off they haven't gone to any of our neighbours. One of ours doesn't like us and would probably say something negative if she was asked. Heaps of dogs around here aren't even registered and are always out roaming around.
  10. Yes the King Charles are not the same as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels ;) and not all CKCS's have the same look ;) If you have to time have a look at some of the breed threads (in the subforum) the ones that you are thinking on and there will be plenty of photos of different members dogs ;)
  11. You obviously don't like the look of Cavs, and thats fine. we can't all like the same types of dogs! ;-) but first you said its because they have short shouts. As I replied earlier theres different lines, and they don't all have the shorter snouts ;-) And now you said you not keen on their curls. 2 of mine are fairly smooth coated ones. One is definitely a pure bred. I'm not sure of the other one Toby as he was rehomed to us but hes fairly smooth coated and quite long legged! Our other 2 have been quite wavy/curly coated. I think people see pictures on the net or come across a few and think they all are the same. But there are different lines and looks. Just letting you know there are a few variations to their 'look' Some still look more like the original ones in years gone by... Not trying to convince you to get a Cav as they obviously NOT what you are after ! :) Goodluck in your search for the breed that is most suited to you ;) oops SORRY you might have been refering to the curls of a poodle, just re read. My mistake!
  12. Just so you know (I'm a very passionate Cavalier owner) Some of them have shorter snouts.. our first one did as his Mother Renae does. However Our youngest one Miah has the longer snout, so does Toby our newest one ;) I personally prefer the shorter snouts on them but the ones from years and years ago originally had the longer snouts. Depend which breeder you choose also :) King Charles which are different have very squashed in faces ;-)
  13. Its how we got our first Cavalier. He was being shown but not very successfully. He hated it. We had gone to a show to meet some breeders and we ended up falling in love with one of their young show dogs! He was up for sale to the right person. The decision wasn't made there and then of course ;-) We have another ex show dog from that same breeder (her foundation bitch- Renae, who is now 12 ) but that came about from knowing her (the breeder) from years earlier from that show where we met her! Miah's breeder doesn't show much these days (and I don't think she was ever fully into it) but is heavily involved with the SA Cavalier Club, which is where we met her (at pet owner fun days). Apart from trying our best to get a reputable and ethical one, there are certain traits my husband and I look for in choosing a breeder. They don't have to show their dogs, its just thats how it worked out for our first two :)
  14. Same here :) I just hope that San&paul comes back and reads all these helpful replies and lets us know how their puppy is getting on :)
  15. Ours don't get a lot of dry food especially the 2 younger ones but I buy this brand (inbetween buying RC (Cavalier) dry food) and I have had no problems with it at all. Cavaliers can get itchy skin, so grain free is better for them. I feed the cats a grain free cat dry food as well :) I don't find it expensive with the amount they get, I can make it last for ages between 3 Cavs.
  16. I admit i give Renae some raw carrot every so often (separate to the vege mixes I make up in the food processor for their meals rations) only because she cant have bones anymore but she seems to cope with some carrot (not a whole one) and it gives her a treat to chew on (under supervision) Shes been fine with her digestion ;)
  17. Yes I agree CavNRott re the raw veges and thats how I do them ;)
  18. I don't cook up my Cavs kangaroo mince, they get it raw with raw veges and fruit (that is ok for dogs). We bulk mix it up and bag it up into portions and freeze it. I get it out daily. I do the same with Chicken mince. The two younger ones get chicken frames chopped up into suitable sizes also (kept in freezer also) and other bits and pieces in their diet eg raw eggs (even with some of the shell crushed up a bit), sardines etc (not given all at same time) They get very minimal dry food. ps I give them this also a couple nights a week http://www.4legs.com...al.php#CHPA_900
  19. Our Cavs have all needed doing from time to time, we have been shown how to do it but we haven't actually done it ourselves yet. We either get them done at the vets, if they are there for some reason or have them done at the SA Cavalier fun days (twice a year) Feeding them pumpkin in their diet often helps keep them cleaned out :)
  20. I have been feeding Miah raw food (including raw veges) since we got her and her breeder had started her on raw solids and she got an impacted anal gland earlier this year, poor thing was in so much pain. The vet said its not common with dogs that are fed raw diets but it can happen, Fortunately hers burst and they put her onto two lots of strong AB's as it wouldn't heal for ages. Luckily it did or she might have had to have an op that could have left her incontinent (shes not even 2!) They said it could happen again or may never happen again. Did suggest we give her some physiiluim (sp?) husks in her diet if she started having problems again. That was months ago, shes been fine since *touch wood*
