  1. I would go the Dogtra zappy collar too! Depending on what Steve recommends regarding Calli's anxiety
  2. I see people refer to their dogs as high drive when IMO the dogs are moderate and definitely not what I'd class as high drive, to me when I think of a high drive dog I think of a WL Malinois, like Pax's (member of this forum) dog Prix Here are a couple: http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages.php?pageid=79 http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages.php?pageid=55 A dog displaying aggression is displaying drive, just not what we'd class as a 'positive' drive like food, pack or prey drive.
  3. Nope - all stil here but there is a thread in OT too
  4. People are also free to post entries on our forum (link in my sig below) or by emailing me a pic and caption at [email protected] It wouldn't be a competition if we didn't have conditions of entry

I love independent breeds and I have lots of fun training mine, especially my beagle as she's way more independent than my sooky Sibe! I would never say it's impossible to train them (though lots of people have told me it is) but it is definitely more of a challenge sometimes!
  10. Not at all, in fact I wouldn't expect a WL dog to be worn out easily through exercise. At the end of the day, exercise will just make the dogs fitter and stronger which means they will require more and more in order to get tired. I think it's great you are joining a working club, as IMO mental exercise and working our dogs is a far better way to tire them out than physical exercise.
  11. jacqui835 what kind of mental exercise does you dog get?
  12. This would be impossible for me. For people who own working breeds, even a 2 hour walk on the leash doesn't begin to drain their energy. I could walk all day with my dog on the leash, and when I got home, he would still be rearing to go and probably destroy my house in frustration. I know my sister's papillons are more than satisfied with a walk to the shops and back, but my doberman can do a morning of lure coursing, an afternoon of swimming and running at the beach and an evening of chasing the cat and still have energy to spare - and I imagine that a german shepherd could be similar. I do not walk my dog on the leash to drain his energy, I can't not walk fast enough or for long enough to do that. I do it for training purposes and so that I can take him with me everywhere. This is a difficult situation, but given the dog is still relatively young and subsequently energetic, I don't think leash walking will cut it. I also agree that 'firm handling' could be of use. My dog went through a stage at 7-9 months of wanting to fight and dominate other dogs, as did many of the other dominant breed males he had played with so happily up until then (GSD's, staffies etc). We came down on him hard, I don't mean beating him or anything, but grabbing the side of his neck, corrections with check chains etc and after a few weeks of that, well over a year later and he has not had any further issues. Sometimes a behaviour comes naturally (male entire dobermans are not typically accepting of other large males), and your dog doesn't have fear or feel pain so they're not looking for a way to avoid the situation - they want to dominate and it drives them. So praising them for good behaviour doesn't cut it, they are not satisfied. We had to make sure our dog knew we would not accept that sort of behaviour. One of the ladies back at Centennial Park owned a GSD, a couple of months older than Sammy who went through a similar phase. She used only praise and desexed him to try and solve his behavioural problems, even though prior to that he was going to be used for breeding (he was to this day the most magnificent GSD I have ever seen). Well he can't go to parks anymore because he's very DA. I have a dog now that other dogs can launch themselves at, rudely bash right into him kind of thing, and he barely bats an eye lid. I think that is a hugely simplified view of something that actually very complex. You don't know that it was the fact the owner used praise that didn't stop her dogs aggression. You don't know that giving it rough corrections on a check chain would have made it better. There are more ways to deal with aggression than those two choices, and I don't know any reputable trainer or behaviourist who deals with aggression with either of those methods. I agree with others that aggression is not something that can really be advised on seriously over the net.
  13. excuse me Huski where did I say she is doing nothing? I recommended a Sch club as they can practically show her the tracking and obedience components and also you get to watch the older dogs do it. You can do foundation preywork, but starting a working pup at this age on basics of the work you want them to do later (like tracking, bitework etc) you can really help cement some good habits for down the track. Goes for all dogs but particularly working line as they're so fast to soak things up and want to learn. Believe it or not I do have a wee idea about foundation work for sport and working dogs. I didnt realise I had to go through the Huski filter to give an opinion. No need to get snitchy Nekhbet, I was responding to where you said LMSW should start early. Perhaps you missed the part where she said she doesn't know what she wants to do with her pup yet? She mentioned maybe being interested in tracking, not bite work or Schutzhund obedience. You can't start a pup training in any sport until you decide which one you want to do. Either way she is getting good guidance in her training program now, so no need to sweat it. Anyway no need to bring this thread OT with whatever personal issues you have with me, feel free to PM me and bitch that way, or start another thread. Sorry for taking your thread OT, SK
  14. Do you have a video of you playing tug with him? That could help to see how you are handling and presenting the tug. For me, as soon as teeth hit my hand it would be an immediate end of the game. I would give a no reward marker and walk out of the room/go back inside. I wouldn't pull it out of his reach as a deterrent for biting your hands as this will just make him more frustrated and eager for the toy (this is how we build drive for the tug!). What kind of tug are you using?
  15. Well LMSW is doing the working/sport puppy raising DLP with Steve so its not like she is doing nothing no point in training any sport without good foundations. She is starting early, she's training now.
  16. You don't have to use stay in ANKC obedience. I think if LMSW has a solid foundation trained with her pup the pup could do just about any activity.
  17. Love them Shell! They are beautiful. I am sure your grandfather would have loved them.
  18. Mine is self explanatory... It used to be Husky87 but I don't like usernames with numbers in them and everyone called me Husky anyway - but Husky was taken so I had to be creative Now I get called Huski in real life quite frequently
  19. I don't get what is wrong with someone wanting to learn more about how to have fun with their dogs? That sort of thing doesn't come naturally to many people. What an odd thing to say.
  20. Do you mean what colour I use? Not sure sorry, it's something out of my hairdresser's bag of magic tricks Ask for the colour base and shade number (sorry I can't remember the right name atm ) and you'll be able to match it up to any brand. It will be a decimal number like 5.3 or something ;) Oh ok, not sure the exact level but it is definitely lighter than a five, I normally go a 6-7. We actually put a bleach wash in it this time (I had it done the morning of the shoot) because the previous colour was coming up too dark. Nek if you want a brighter red and have black hair I'd guess you'd need to do a bleach wash first too.
