  1. I love taking my dogs to markets. It's also a great distraction for training and awesome socialization for pups, especially as other dogs are leashed. I've been taking my puppy to the markets every weekend, we have a very cute local market we have been going to weekly of late. I get so many comments and compliments on her behavior and a few of the store holders call her their "favorite dog" lol
  2. When you see the dog running the blind exercise that's the protection element, when you get to see all the fun bitings :)
  3. Good luck Dory! Hope you get a video of your BH run out :)
  4. Sorry my inbox was full! Good to go now :)
  5. Definitely not (well we are always busy but always take on new clients! :) )- my apologies again I missed your calls :) I'm out now this morning but I will call him as soon as I am back in the office.
  6. 2 weeks but? Anyway we will try again this week and see how we go. Hey GSD! Bec from K9 Pro here! My apologies you haven't got a hold of us - I've had some trouble with my emails (my computer crashed and I lost everything for the second time this year!) and I had to take leave suddenly when my nana passed away. So I think I've missed a few phone calls and emails - if you shoot me a PM with your number I will give you a call tomorrow morning.
  7. Steve can do home visits in particular circumstances. Shoot me a PM if your friend wants more info.
  8. Thanks everyone! To be honest I love wiz so much I was worried I would compare blaze to her too much, but I have been very relieved to find I don't at all :)
  9. I thought you guys might like this story, you can see what I mean when I say Blaze is quite a clever cookie! The other night I took Blaze outside with me to get some wood for the fire. I store it in my carport area which is at the side of my house. She picked up a piece of wood and carried it in and dropped it at the fireplace as I was loading the wood in. About an hour later I let her out of her pen. She ran to the backdoor asking to go outside, I figured she needed to toilet. I let her out and she ran all the way from the back of the property around to the front to the carport, picked up a piece of wood and bought it inside and gave it to me. I was pretty impressed with her memory as when she came out with me, we went out the front door, and it was daylight. When she went out by herself it was night time, and I let her out a completely different side of the property but she remembered where it was.
  10. I have pushed food drive in Blaze more as I didn't develop it all that strongly in Wiz. So her food drive is a bit higher which is good for training positions and stuff for obed :) but prey wise they are very on par even now. I am really really happy with how Blaze is developing so far, she is super fast and really smart. Here's a vid we took last week, motivation is not an issue
  11. I thought you guys might like to see an updated pic. Here's one of Blaze with her mumma Wiz :) Totally not related... LOL
  12. Yes I agree TSD, I am sure a vid will make it clearer :) What sort of markers do you use to mark the correct movement/ position? it may also be a communication/timing problem.
  13. It is really uncommon for me to get a knock at my door as my house is quite far from the street and I have do not enter signs on my front gate. So if I get a knock on the door I am not expecting, Wiz always accompanies me to see who it is ;) :)
  14. When he is on the target and in the front position, and you say heel, are you giving a hand signal or using a lure? or if you give the voice command, will he do an awesome flip still? If you have a look at the vid I have posted of Blaze above, I am using a lure to train the motion of the flip, I train this in the box then test it out of the box when she is completing the flip nicely. Are you doing anything differently in your signals away from the target?
  15. Have you tried transitioning already Lisa? Maybe you could post a video of what it looks like on the perch vs without one. When the dog is elevated with a perch this can build the incorrect muscle memory as you are adding height to the dog they don't have without the perch. Have you tried using a flat target, like a frisbee or similar? If you do, do you get the same quality flip?
  16. Hey Terri, how are you going training the flip finish? I thought of you when I uploaded this vid a couple of days ago, here's Crazy Blaze-y starting to get the hang of her finishes :)
  17. I don't have my dogs loose in the house when visitors arrive. They are either crated or on a place mat or in a pen (for the puppy). I don't want visitors arriving to be a big deal, and management is really important with the dogs I have. Once people have been over for a bit I will let the dogs out to lie next to me. Dogs need to know what you expect of them, so giving them something to do like be in their crate, on a mat, in a down etc gives you a desirable behaviour you can reinforce.
  18. Daisy was the worst counter surfer ever. I used a remote training collar to sort the problem, on a very low level but enough to annoy her and break the habit. A scat mat can work on a similar principle, but on a much higher stim level than a collar, and it is restricted to a specific area. You can obviously manage them and train an alternative behaviour but IME the only thing that actually breaks a habit like that is to teach them they can no longer gain success with the behaviour.
  19. I am looking at getting the Variocages for my car. They seem like quite a reasonable price and I love how they are adjustable.
  20. I totally agree SM. He tried to cover it up and got caught. If it had been handled honestly and truthfully in the beginning, the backlash would be no where near as severe.
  21. A little video from this morning, we are working on our random recalls. Also doing some heel work stuff which is super fun (will post a video update once we make some good progress).
  22. It definitely depends on the judge. Even with IPO/Sch there are different heeling styles, some handlers train more heavily stylized work than others. Even when I competed with my beagle I had some judges say she was "almost too close". The more old school judges IME are more likely to ping "up" heel work as crowding or impeding handler movement. But it does depend on the judge and their interpretation of the rules. ETA: as Lisa mentioned in the post above consistency is really important. If the dog doesn't consistently hold position they can lose points for moving out of heel position. The "tighter" the heel work the more obvious it becomes if the dog moves out of position.
  23. Umm lets see, you and Wiz, Henna & Jaimie, Reegan & Dusty, Nic & Flick  I'm actually loving it which is surprising, because I watched a Crufts obedience video and was put off by the stiffness of it all! But the idea of training it in drive really appealed to me and it just seems like so much fun! I do want to get her started on rear end awareness though, I'll watch some more videos of that too and find a suitable something or other to train it on :) The UK style heeling you will see in Crufts is quite different to, say, IPO/Schutzhund style heel work. It is different again to what you would see here in the ANKC obedience ring. A lot of Australian judges would heavily ping competitors here for doing UK style heel work under the rule that it impedes handler movement when the dog is touching you. I really love training obed, I find it heaps of fun
