Sudden Onset Of Pain In 7 Year Old Cavalier's Leg
persephone replied to Trisven13's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mitchell's surgery involved deepening the groove for it to sit back in , and re-directing some ligaments to hold everything ; bandaged and immobile leg .. some weeks of convalescence and being spoilt ..and a build up to full use again . it was perfect for the next 6 or so years :) I remember it , as I assisted during surgery .... probably not the best idea in retrospect Hope your boy's issue is easily fixed ..and he doesn't have to endure the pain :) -

..you can, if you are crushing them .. do as suggested above .. or crush finely and mix with butter or icecream ( about a teaspoonful) ..pop it into her mouth .. RIGHT IN .. and jut gently hold her mouth closed while patting and talking to her ... the icream/butter melts ..she swallows .... it should happen. -

Is this really what happens > the same thing over & over? Training, I've always been told is better in short bursts, often ...

Sudden Onset Of Pain In 7 Year Old Cavalier's Leg

sounds like patella at first thought - can you feel any abnormality in that knee compared with the other? Gently palpate each knee .. have your fingers each side ..with kneecap in teh middle there shouldn't be any/much lateral movement . it's been a long time, but when Mitchell had the problem .and we were awaiting surgery, during runs , he used to yip, stop, and wait for me to move the patella back in its groove..then off he'd run again .... he was about 4 i think when it was noticed ..and after surgery he was 110 % :) -

..as long as the tablets do not have a shiny smooth coating they are OK to be crushed, usually ... ones with a shiny hard coating (like M&Ms) should not be cut/crushed, as they are designed to dissolve further down in a dog's gut ..... I have always found coating them with butter , then poking them over the back of the tongue the quickest & easiest .A lot of people disguise them in salami/bits of sausage, too . Unfortunately, if they get a nasty taste - then even treats can be refused -

with tablets they cannot easily spit them out if you poke them waay down OVER the tongue ..right into the throat .....so they are not in the mouth at all ;) It works even better if tablet is in a teaspoon of cold butter/marg ..or enough cheese/peanut butter to just cover tablet . http://www.vetwest.com.au/pet-library/giving-your-pet-a-tablet-hints-and-tips -
Opal .. your reward for a well lived life is now to be pain free and beautiful forever :)

Can't you just poke the tablet down her throat? Over the tongue .. hold muzzle closed , and rub throat ... :) Will she eat icecream/drink milk/ eat scrambled egg/cat food/porridge & cream........ maybe stuff she can lap instead of chew? Is she drinking OK ? I suggest tableting her/feeding her with the other dog restrained .... only one needs the special treatment :p -

maybe try her on a half decent canned food like Nature's Gift ? That smells not bad .. my cats will push their way in to grab it on teh occasions I use it ! It does seem as if there is jaw involvement ..... with the pain on eating. How did she react when the vet checked her throat/mouth? -

Eye Socket (orbital) Disease (exophthalmos)
persephone replied to Spoony's topic in General Dog Discussion
If there is an infection .. that prescribed antibiotic may not be the right one to kill it . there may well be a foreign body encapsulated behind the eye ... I hope you are firm on Tuesday ..and get some answers. Glas she's not in obvious pain though :) -
Both humping and pulling/reacting are bad manners and you should not ignore . There is HEAPS of info/techniques in that EXERCISING REACTIVE DOGS thread I linked to previously ... have a good read :)

Ouch it must be very painful ... No idea .. but if there is a 24 hr clinic , it might be worthwhile to pay them a visit .Hope she's OK again soon . -
Same here ... wait as long as you can . he is now a teenager, and , as you have found, he is learning new behaviours! I suggest you do a lot more training with him .. long on lead walks ..even start him on this program.. just so he learns he is NOT the boss ;) I suggest, too , that you read the following thread . managing his behaviour at this age is very important - castrated or not - as it is now he is learning and setting down habits .

No idea about showing .. but perhaps just spend a minute or two several times a day lifting lips/opening mouth ..rubbing gums /treat & repeat ? I do that a lot with any puppies we have here..first when they're being cuddled ... then as time passes..when they are sitting waiting for something ..or anytime really .... I must admit ..never have done it so a stranger can then step in ....
-
perhaps try him on probiotics (you can use the human ones) . The two things could well be related - some sort of odd way his body works(or doesn't) ...... what happens if he gets more raw soft bone in his diet ? does his poo change then?
-
I have owned everything from 5 kg to around 40 kg tho I guess around 18 is 'normal' breeds? hairy or not , prick eared or not , squashed face or not ;)
-
Hopefully dog will be feeling more comfortable soon .. I presume the vet sells Hills? That's usually why they recommend it ;) Love Dora & her mouthful! :)
-
:) that's very different .. he was still able to be independent and to walk/run comfortably ..as a dog ... with his back parallel to the ground . Good for him!

and that's what she has to learn.. she has never had to think for herself ... or cope with situations . I guess she was penned .. had food once a day .. and that was that .. all this must be hurting her brain When you are doing things - perhaps put her in a crate where she can see what's happening .. but doesn't have to make decisions ? that way, too, Georgia gets some free time ...and you can get about your life . I have no experience .. but would just go slow .. and give her a rest .. She has so much to take in .. best to do it in a way that happens ..not that is 'made to happen' if she is settled in a crate .. then she can watch/absorb for a while ..safe . You can then just open the door in passing - with no effusive greetings ..and let her out .. *shrug* that's what I'd do anyhow :)

I'm no rescuer .. I'd be a bad rescuer I have been involved in euthing many puppies with problems ..and they don't know what they are about to give up ... it is much less stressful/painful than surgery /recuperation . there are more than enough puppies/dogs who DO have a chance at rehabilitation and living long and love filled lives as 'just' a dog - not an exhibit.
