  1. Phenergan and Polaramine are different drugs but both are antihistamines. Most over the counter antihistamines are fine for dogs, I would probly use Phenergan over Polaramine for skin allergy, and Claratyne and Zyrtec are good as well. It is important to check dosages with your vet however most antihistamines require alot to overdose so a single tablet would usually be ok for any dog over 20kg, dose is more important for the smaller weight animals.
  2. Its a 2 step preocess because the purpose of the NSW Companion Animal Act is more than just identification. The Companion Animal Register operates under the Act. Firstly dogs are identified as puppies so if they are lost or end up in the pound the owner can be notified and retrieve their animal. The lifetime registration process in NSW unifies all councils under the same procedure and the cost of registration is $150 for undesexed animals, $40 for desexed animal (unless you are a registered breeder or a dog is in an exempt category). The difference in costs is an incentive to desex your animal. If you choose not to register your animal, desexed or otherwise, there are penalties in place. If your dog is impounded and not registered you may have to pay registration, a fine for the animal not being registered, as well as pound release fees. In the same way rangers in NSW can scan animals that are out of the yard, or may visit you if there is a complaint, and can scan your animals and impose fines if they are not registered. Hope this helps, there is also info on the Dept of Local Gov't website.
  3. In NSW when a pup is microchipped the permanent identification papers are subitted to coucil and the chip number is registered with the NSW Companion Animal Register. When you buy a pup change of owner forms are submitted to council and you recieve a Certificate of Identification from the coucil where the forms were submitted (the council where the breeder is located). If you don't get this you need to check with your breeder!! In NSW dogs need to be registered from 6 months of age. When your pup is desexed you take the Certificate of Identification and desexing certificate and register them then. That is lifetime registraion for all of NSW. If you change councils you do a change of owner form but do not need to re-register with the new coucil. If you move outside of NSW, you need to register with the local council and also with a national database, as not all pounds in all states check on the NSW register. If you are staying in NSW, it is optional to register the chip number with a national database such as the Australasian Animal Register (run by the Royal Agricultural Society), they have a downloadable form on their website. That means if you dog is lost or stolen and moved out of state, it is listed on a national database. In NSW dogs do not need to wear coucil tags but when outside the yard need to wear a collar and identification tag with a name and phone number on it. All of this aims to protect your animal is lost, so that you can be contacted if it is found. As petsearch said however, it doesn't protect against your dog being stolen or found by a dishonest person.
  4. I have a dog with problem skin and he gets something which sounds similar. He has allergies and gets secondary bacterial and fungal infevtions, so for a flare up I use a mix, so not sure which helps. If antibiotics aren't working and steriods aren't stopping it might be worth trying an antifungal. Resolve cream you can get at a pharmacy and slather on. That said, I did think most crusty sores were caused by bacteria. Goodluck.
  5. You could try metoclopramide as it tends to make dogs less drowsy than ACE tablets. I have used it with good results. Please check with your vet though as it is a gastric stimulant, am not sure whether his past health problems would affect its suitability.
  6. Smell and discharge sounds like infection. The ingredients in the ear cleaner will irritate the canal and it will hurt you dog, he wont likely want to come back for more. Antibiotic drop alone for the first day or two would be better. Next time you get an ear infection try dropping some swimmers ear drops in and see how it feels. Ouch.
  7. Very sad new pomquest Am so sorry. You obviously tried really, really hard for her.
  8. If she's weeing surely thats a good sign There is no injectable form of cephalexin, it must be another cephalosporin such as cephalothin or cefotaxime. Most antibiotics are safe and human paediatric doses can be used I believe. Am not as good as I should be on my antibiotics but I think you could be doing better than a cephalosporin. Her viral infection will run its course but could cause a breakdown in the integrity of the gut wall allowing normal gut flora to invade the peritonium which is highly dangerous hence the antibiotic choice being important. Sorry, am probably telling you stuff you already have from the vet. Goodluck and best wishes to your little girl
  9. Goodluck with your pup, I have had sucess with subcut fluid with a very dehydrated pound pup. Not sure how your vet is doing it but we would put in about 50mL (much bigger pup than yours) to make a big lump under the skin, wait for it to absorb and then go again. If the kidneys are ok she will start weeing if she's not already. My only suggestion would be to maybe rest her orally and just give fluids for 48hours, and make sure its fluid with glucose/dextrose in it. The best I think is the 0.45 saline with 2.5 glucose, but Hartmans otherwise. Make sure the antibiotic is right for a GI infection too - I've been told septrin/lincomycin are good ones.
  10. Yep! Get a pic of a cattle dog, they don't look like your dog. If she has some cattle in her that is more evident in person, its not the predomiant breed.
  11. SOOV antiseptic cream has 3% lignocaine, which should numb the area for him.
  12. If you're not looking forward to the next vet visit, imagine how your puppy feels! It sounds like she was petrified, poor mite. Overstressing puppies can cause beahviour issues. There is heaps and heaps of info here and other places on the net about handling puppies, fear periods etc.
  13. Have heard this question before but I have seen dog fights and you would NOT be unsure about what was happening, unless you were deaf. Watch the body language but also afterwards, if its a real dog fight often one will be feeling very sorry for him/her self (the loser). I dont know about everone else but I also find that in a normal household situation dogs only fight when someone is home, I've never come home to find unexplained fight injuries??
  14. Tou can vaccinate against parvo but when its time for the annual C3 or 4,5 you will be doubling up. The problem with the KC vacc is its mostly needed to kennel dogs and you need a vet certificate which you wont have if doing it yourself. I have heard of rescue people using the parvo vaccine for pups just out of the pound or on arrival to the pound if they are getting resuce but thats about the only time its probably useful.
  15. I find spot ons the only really effective long term solution so we have no fleas here, but have picked up a few dogs from the pound that were really riddled and found the capstar excellent for fast knockdown, followed by a spot on.
  16. Plain sorbolene cream can be used as a cleanser but not inside the canal. For the skin you can easily get to it might soften the gunk so it will come off without rubbing. Leave it on a few mins then gently wipe off with tissues/tp. Just a suggestion, never tried it myself but it's probably what I would try in your situation. Then off to the vet for better ear drops. My vet kept giving me the same thing for an allergic lab to no effect but a different ointment we got from the dermatologist worked wonders. Goodluck.
  17. I don't know what EPI is but - muscle = protein fat = lipid starch = a complex form of carbohydrate. There is heaps of starch in potatoes, and I'm pretty sure rice too so not sure how much sense the chicken and rice thing does. Protein sources are lean meats, eggs etc. Vege's would be ok as are very low carb and usually no fat (except for potato, sweet potato, parsnip) Not sure if this info has clarified anything, goodluck though.
  18. Likely the chip, which is like a big grain of rice, added to that the body reacts to the foreign object to form scar type tissue around it. I can still find mine on my 3.5yo dog.
  19. Yep same, the most immediate concern would be dehydration. Use the skin pinch test and try to keep the fluids up, a tiny bit of brown sugar in it may help. Goodluck.
  20. I've used Maxolon with good success for dogs travelling long distances. Also, some dogs do grow out of travel sickness, you just have to clean up the mess in the mean time. Unfortunately Maxolon only comes in one strength. I can't find my paediatric pharmacoepia but another ref gives a dose of 0.1mg/kg, very hard to do for a pup. Sorry.
  21. If there's nothing else you can do for him, which it sound like, you can set your alarm and check on him through the night, that way you will see if he's getting worse and can take him to the emergency vetif need be. Goodluck
  22. Jed - very true ;) I will try to get more info about the complication with peroxide. Found the name at least - oxygen embolism. There's not a lot of info around but I know of no current wound care guidelines that involve use of H2O2. Its not my area so I could easily be wrong. I have however been told by a vet not to use it on the dogs. Each to his own I guess.
  23. My understanding is that hydrogen peroxide is not recommended for open wounds in either humans or animals, it does remove pus and oxygenates the wound however there is a rare complication the name of which escapes my which can be very serious. An absess that is draining pus is better than one that is closed, more pus could still be forming so if possible keep it open (as someone else said) and if you can wash it out with saline or dilute betadine. If there is a big enough hole you could you a syringe (without needle) to get good penetration. Goodluck eta - emmark there are aerobic and anaerobic bacteria (grow in the presence or absence of oxygen) and bacteria can also classified as gram positive or gram negative depending on how they react to gram stain. Antibiotics have differing spectrums of activity amoung these bacteria.
  24. Vitamin A, in both fish oil and cod liver is toxic in overdose. Maybe check the amount of VitA in each against the recommended daily intake for dogs (which I don't know)
  25. Regardless of whether you decide to rehome the dog, be aware that chickens are natural prey for dogs, the only answer is to separate them as said above. Also, remeber your dog is not stupid, it knows the difference between a chicken and a cat and a human child just as well as you do.
