  1. I don't know if black borzoi is rare or disqualifying colour. maybe it's both.
  2. These are marked as white scottish terrier. The first one looks more like a very pale wheaten, but second one looks more like a white.
  3. I knew you would know this. :D Wheaten in my post was actually a reference to that specific colour, I knew they were kerry blues. I must admit I like them.
  4. This looks (to me) like a wheaten kerry blue terrier. What do you think?
  5. Here is some history of Chortaj, including standard. There are also some old photos of other Russian sighthounds, Borzoi and Stepnaya. Chortaj I always loved Borzoi, but the other ones are equally stunning.
  6. These are five hound breeds from former Yugoslavia. I don't think there are any outside the Balkans. Serbian tri-colour hound Serbian hound Istrian hound Posavaz hound Montenegrin mountain hound
  7. Well, the confusing thing is that there are two bowls with fresh water at his disposal at any time. He only drinks from the pool ocassionaly. But, he likes to keep me confused like that. Often, he hides things around so we can't find them. Bloody poodles, too smart for their own good.
  8. That was my belief too. I was, and still am, confused with drinking from the pool thing. On the second note, I know that pigs don't sweat, but where the hell is 'sweating like a pig' coming from?
  9. Very interesting question. I always thought that dogs don't need salt added to their food. However, my dog sometimes drink from the pool, which is a salt-water one. It horiffied me because I didn't know how to teach him not to do that. It is possible that he just needs salt. He is also excessive licker. Hmm. I will try to give him a little salt with food and see if it changes anything.
  10. As everybody said, look at the postage cost. I bought a bass guitar from USA last year. Postage was $100. Even than the total cost was like a half price of what I would pay here.
  11. Why? Because she sees the things the way they are and doesn't need to make something up to make her feel better? Needless to say I don't believe in that 'soul' thing. Believing is very strange business. Some people believe they were kidnapped by aliens, and some people actually saw Elvis at the local coner store. You can't prove they are wrong, and of course they can't prove they are right. A bit like catch 22. But what would I know, I don't believe in so many things that make other people warm and fuzzy.
  12. I don't think it is breed specific. You may find bitches within the same breed that have different cycles. We had an Airedale terrier bitch in the past, and she was coming into oestrus every 9 months. Her mother had it once a year. Other bitches form the same litter varied between twice and once a year. I believe one had it like 8-9 months as well.
  13. And that is the reason why there are so many abandoned dogs, IMO of course. People get something they like the look of, but once they realise that the dog's personality and/or needs are different from what they want they just get rid of the poor animal. Unfortunately, many don't learn the lesson and get something else they like the look of. For example, I like great danes and bulldogs. Knowing what I know about those breeds, and their needs especially, I decided not to get either of them. Instead I got a standard poodle that fit our needs and lifestyle perfectly, and I believe that we (human part of the family) fit our dog's needs and lifestyle equally well.
  14. That is the most ridiculous comment. I really hope you don't mean this.
  15. I agree, the Belgian Malinios is missing from the list and the GSD is the smartest of that lot Malinois is 22. The list is actually based on obedience and trainability. Does not include creativity and genetic variations within the same breed. Making a list that would include all possible aspects relevant to dog intelligence is impossible (IMO). And even if it is, some people would dispute it, just because their preffered breeds are placed low. After all, we all know that our dogs are the smartest (and cutest).
  16. OMG, he may be addicted. And it's not just him. My youngest son (12) also carries them around. Maybe we are all crazy up here. You know, the heat.
  17. You are of course right. Whenever there is a risk people should know. My understanding is that the substance they produce serves as deterent because it tastes bad. It can be toxic to some animals (apparently snakes) and not to others. As I said, I don't know what to think myself. My dog is frequently playing with 'our' green frogs. We have a few that live on the veranda and are quite friendly. He even carries them in his mouth around without ever hurting them. I was very concerned about this, but he never showed any symptoms of poisoning. What I think, which is strictly my opinion, is that frogs actually produce these substances when they feel threatened. If I am right about this, than our frogs may actually enjoy all this attention from big, brown poodle.
  18. I have heard people claiming that their dogs got poisoned by green tree frogs. I don't know what to think about this, since officially all Australian poisonous frogs belong to genus Pseudophryne, and not Litoria (tree frogs). Australian poisonous frogs
  19. For the last 4 years since we moved to Darwin I had to kill 5 cane toads that came in our backyard. So, it's not overwhelming. And if you get your property fenced with chicken wire you should be fine. Our dog loves to play with green tree frogs that we have around the place and I was afraid that he may try the same with cane toads, but for some reason he stays away from them. However, you need to be vigilant.
  20. Well, their own habitat is in South America. I am quite happy to leave them alone there. In Australia they are responsible for bringing many native animals to the brink of extinction. No sympathy for them from me. And I just shovel them. That would kill them immediately.
  21. I met a lady with a sealyham terrier once. She was in shock when I recognised the breed. Apparently I was the first person ever to do so.
  22. We got our standard poodle boy from what I thought was a respected and registered breeder. We found them at the Poodles in Australia website and, when I did some research, their dogs had titles at the shows and everything. After two or so years, I saw in the news that their dogs (about 100 of them!) were taken by RSPCA and that they were breeding dogs for exporting them to Asia. To be perfectly honest, our dog came clean, clipped, wormed and with vaccination record. He is 3 and a half years old now and is perfectly healthy and happy.
  23. As far as I know, dogs don't need cereals in their diet. So I would vote for no rice at all. Also, I feed my dog raw meat with bones. I believe it is better for them. Sorry, I just realise I didn't help you much (or at all). Maybe somebody else will give you better advice.
