  1. Totally agree. Standard or mini poodles are fantastic family dogs. Happy to do just about anything. Out standard plays with kids pretty much everything they can think of, from waterpolo to soccer and hide and seek. Coat, when kept short, is very easy for maintenance, and no shed (that was the key thing for us).
  2. I don't know who descended from who, but dogs and wolves are today considered to be the same species. Another possibility is that they evolved simultaneously from the same ancestor. I don't think hyenas are involved because they are not canids at all. They are separate family that evolved from civet-like animals.
  3. Wow, thanks for such detailed breed history. It could be used as 'How to create a dog breed 1.0.1.' I like how they produced 800 litters with over 4000 puppies all within the standard. If I dare say nothing like 'oodles.
  4. I wish people would refrain from using words like 'stupid', 'knob' and similar for the cases like this. Wanting to breed his own dog may be wrong, unethical and so on, but that doesn't make the man stupid, idiot and whatnot. People here are way to quick to use abusive and offensive language if they disagree with something. I also think he would win, and he should. These bylaws are ridiculous. IMO of course.
  5. How do you know it was a boy? Maybe it was a very hairy girl.
  6. I know I am in minority but that boy is beautiful.
  7. You are right. There is a course and several tests (depending on the state, company etc.) All drivers know they have to take a passenger with a guide dog. They do and still some refuse. Usualy they get away with this because passengers with dogs that are refused a ride often choose not to contact transport dept. and lodge a complaint. However, drivers can refuse drunks and disorderly passengers anytime.
  8. Mites are easily the least known group of animals. We are not even able to guess how many species are there. Some of them live in the soil when they feed on fungi, plant material or other smaller animals. Some of them are parasitic and live on animals or plants. Many transmit diseases on plants or animals. I would expect that any treatment for ticks would be effective on mites as well. But don't know for sure. I did work on some mites that live on isects long time ago. They are quite cool, but frustrating since there is simply no information on them.
  9. My dog doesn't like livers and kidneys. I guess he doesn't like the smell, because he would eat frozen ones. Maybe you can once or twice a week add some frozen kidneys or liver so overall balance would be ok.
  10. I don't think they can do any real harm to dogs. However, they can be used to train your dogs to stay away from snakes.
  11. It was quite natural for Bruno. He always loved water and swimming.
  12. Kidneys and livers are really good, but some dogs don't like the smell (like mine). But, I tricked him. I give them to him frozen and he eats them before they melt.
  13. Many vets hate raw food diet, and many don't know about it. I was surprised at first when vet I asked about it never heard of it. However, many puppies are fed raw food only and they grew to be happy healthy dogs. I did combination at first. From the start Bruno much preferred raw and only ate dry ocassionaly. Eventually he completely stopped and he was on raw since. He is 3 now, and very healthy, happy and active. For the puppy, probably the best way to introduce bones is chicken necks. They are not the best for adults because they tend to gulp them whole.
  14. You can find a list of Australian poisonous frogs here: Australian poisonous frogs. They all belong to genus Pseudophryne, which should mean that green tree frogs (genus Litoria) are not poisonous. Unfortunately that site does not give photos of these species, only distribution and some information, although not much because all these species seem rare. There are some photos here: Frogs of Australia, but you will have to scroll and look for these species.
  15. I don't care about the country of origin. We picked Bruno for our brown standard poodle. The name is Italian, and normally refers to a man with brown hair (like male version of brunette).
  16. That's a good question. I'd love to know the answer too.
  17. Not much to add. Our standard poodle loves chicken frames. Anything chicken really. He never liked beef bones, they seem to hard for him, while lamb flaps are ok. You can also try turkey wings and necks. They are too large to be gulped whole. You can still use chicken wings, but try to freeze them 2-3 together, so your dogs has to chew them.
  18. Here's the video. Paul Merton in a Poodle parlour
  19. Is there any truth in claims that they were developed by KGB? I have seen BRT in Europe. Magnificent dogs. I could never figure out though, why are they called terriers when they are clearly not.
  20. Most of blood sucking insects, ticks and mites can affect dogs. It can be mosquitoes, but can also be biting midges, sandflies, fleas, lice etc. Most of mosquitoes are mostly active right after sunset for about an hour, after that their number should drop. However, there are mozzies that are active during the day and they can be pretty aggresive too. Midges are also active during the day. I do believe that repellents suggested by others would affect most of these buggers. However, I would be careful with the dosage, because repellents themselves can cause rush (I know from personal experience).
  21. In my experience (based on my poodle) the insulator theory doesn't work. Since it is always hot up here, I know exactly when Bruno's clip is overdue, because he starts to pant a lot and prefer to sleep on the concrete instead on his bed. He is also less active. I normally clip his body short (#7) and after the clip he is much happier and more active.
  22. Market of course. Depending on what can you sell the best.
  23. I don't think it can be harmful for dogs. Except for the ants, they have high acid content and can be irritating for dogs' stomachs.
  24. Looks like a stone. Here is what I found. Gastrolith
  25. I am very curious where is this coming from? When I was studying the dogs were carnivores. Anything I read since showed that dental, anatomical and physiological features place dogs within carnivores. Not to mention belonging to the order Carnivora. Dogs kept as pets don't have a choice about their food, but I really doubt they would choose anyhthing but meat if it was up to them.
